Leap Second Disrupts Internet Sites

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 03:57 AM PDT

We told you about the one-second adjustment to the world’s clocks that brought our measurements in line with the actual rotation of the earth. That was last night, about 8PM EDT. And although it has happened before, and there were warnings, not every website was ready for a temporal disruption that caused older Linux-based systems to crash.

The Pirate Bay was affected.

So was Twitter.

Other sites that went down were Reddit, Gawker media sites, StumbleUpon, Yelp, FourSquare, LinkedIn, and Meetup.

Strangely, Fark was down, but it was a planned outage to move equipment. It just coincided with the leap second crash.

Most of the websites that were affected are back up, or will be soon.

$4.2 Million Home Is a Tear-Down

Posted: 01 Jul 2012 01:00 AM PDT

Photo: ABC News

People buy houses and tear them down all the time, but most people don't spend millions of dollars on them. Not Clark and Sharon Winslow of Belvedere, Marin County, California. They just bought their neighbor's house for $4.2 million and tore it down so they could have a better view.

Ride A Bike, Shorten Your Prison Sentence

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 11:31 PM PDT

Inmates at  the Santa Rita do Sapucai prison in Brazil are being offered a deal too good to pass up-put in 16 hours on a bicycle and get a day knocked off your sentence.

It’s an interesting way to encourage prisoners to cooperate and literally work towards their freedom, and the stationary bikes are being used to charge batteries which are then taken into the city and used to power streetlights.

Sounds like a great way to stay in shape, give back to society and whittle your sentence down while biking.

Josh Atlas And His Strange Sweet Tooth

His strange works are like cautionary tales against eating sweets just before bed, and they’ve put me off of donuts and ice cream for the time being!

If Dr. Seuss Played Skyrim

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 08:03 PM PDT

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see Dr. Seuss as much of a gamer, even if he were alive today. That being said, a video game based on his art would be epic.

But since that still seems unlikely, I guess we’ll have to settle for this delightful take on a Seuss book about Skyrim. The artist, DrFaustusAU also has a few other Seussian works, including a Star Wars one.

The Most Amazing Bowling Story

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 06:00 PM PDT

There have only been 21 sanctioned perfect series in the history of bowling, and Bill Fong was on track to make the 22nd ... but could a last strike on the last frame also spell his death?

Each time he approached the lane, the entire bowling alley went silent. Every time he let fly another roll, there were audible moans from strangers and shouts from the crowd: “That’s it, baby!” Each time he struck, the room erupted with applause. In all his life, Bill Fong had never heard anyone cheering him like that.

He had 33 straight strikes entering the 10th frame of the third game. Out came the cell phone cameras. There were whispers, but as soon as Fong picked up his ball, it was dead quiet. He turned to look at the crowd behind him, now well over 100 people, densely packed from the end of the snack bar to the vending machines 80 feet away.

That’s when the magic left him. Fong began to feel nervous, like the world was watching him pee. He felt the buzz—whatever it had been—leave his body. As he stood in front of lane 28, he felt numb. He tried to push through it.

Usually it's a lot more fun to bowl than to read an article about bowling, but this piece by Michael J. Mooney over at D Magazine is a pleasure to read. Find out what happend to Bill Fong: Link (Photo: Tadd Myers)

Evil Eye Optical Record Player

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Vinyl records use grooves on the disc to encode the music. But not the Evil Eye optical synth by Belgian collective Indianen:

Instead of cutting grooves onto a surface, custom software allows the artists to design and print black-and-white waveform patterns as PDFs, which are then screenprinted onto 12-inch optical discs and played back on a turntable using specialized light-sensing hardware instead of a needle. The waveforms can be either shaped manually in the software or imported / modified from existing patterns.

The "eye" hardware's designer, Tim Knapen, says he opted not to use a smartphone camera as the sensor, because it would have unnecessarily complicated the process. "We use a simple light-to-voltage converter that doesn't do any processing. An iPhone app would require some visual processing but more importantly also some kind of synthesizer. In the setup we used, all the sound is encoded in the disks and there is no need for anything digital."

How Accurately Does Hollywood Age Actors?

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 02:30 PM PDT

In 1967, William Shatner played 34-year old Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek episode “The Deadly Years.” A strange affliction struck members of a landing party, causing them to age rapidly. Within hours, they became elderly, infirm and partially senile.

At the time, Shatner was 36 years old. Now he’s 81. Did the makeup artists accurately predict what he’d look like?

Slate has a slideshow comparing the way several actors were aged with both makeup and time, including Crispin Glover and Tom Wilson of Back to the Future and Orson Welles of Citizen Kane.

LumaHelm: Bike Helmet Meets Daft Punk

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 02:00 PM PDT

Photo: Craig Sillitoe

It's like bicycle helmet meets Daft Punk. Dutch designer Wouter Walmink created a flashing helmet called LumaHelm with 104 multicolored LED lights that can act as (stylish) indicators:

The LumaHelm is based on a standard helmet fitted with lights powered by AA batteries and a sensor that measures movement of the cyclist's head.
An Arduino microcontroller placed in the cyclist's pocket translates those movements into light patterns.

As well as lighting up when a cyclist turns, the helmet, which meets Australian safety standards, lights up at the back when a cyclist brakes.

Mr Walmink says his invention could improve cyclist safety. ''I wanted to make people more visible. I have been cycling around a little bit with this helmet and people definitely notice you coming,'' he says.

It could also signal the end of cyclists poking out their hands as indicators. ''There's a reason why cars have blinkers,'' Mr Walmink says . ''Sticking out your hand on a bike is not the clearest way to communicate that you're turning. The indicator and braking functions communicate information that makes the situation safer.''

Who Stole Jaws?

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 01:30 PM PDT

The iconic image we associate with the movie Jaws was painted by Roger Kastel, who has a few other blockbusters movie poster credits. Kastel was assigned the job of making the shark on the novel’s cover more realistic for the paperback version.

To research his new assignment, Kastel went to the Museum of Natural History, whose photo department was his frequent source for reference materials. "They didn't have anything I could use," he says, "so I asked if they had a shark exhibit. They said they did but that it was closed for cleaning. It was lunchtime, so I went upstairs anyway, and there were all these different stuffed sharks, just laying on boards. I had my camera with me so I took a few pictures. The shark in my painting developed from there. I just tried to paint a ferocious-looking shark that was still realistic."

By all accounts Kastel succeeded, although the graphic nature of Kastel's image (its nudity, not the impending violence) got the paperback banned in Boston, Massachusetts, and St. Petersburg, Florida. "I thought that was the end of my illustration career," Kastel says. "Boy was I ever wrong. Bantam loved the publicity. It was great for book sales."

But that’s just the beginning of the story. The original artwork became more and more famous -just before it disappeared. Read the whole story at Collector’s Weekly. Link -Thanks, Ben!

A Law To Visit Your Parents?

Haven't visited your parents in a while? You may be a lawbreaker.

Shocked by a statistics that more than 33% of Chinese people visit their parents but once a year (and nearly 12% haven't visited in many years), lawmakers in China are pondering an amendment to China's elderly rights law that would require children to visit often.

How would that law be enforced is still up in the air, but 42% of people surveyed supported it already.

Gregory Euclide’s Lunch Break Whiteboard Art Masterpieces

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 11:30 AM PDT

What did you do on your lunch break? Artist and high school teacher Gregory Euclide did a little scribble on his classroom's whiteboard to create a lunch break masterpiece in just 25 minutes!

Here's an interview with Minnesota Original:

MNO: Please tell me about the white board series – how did that begin?

GE: After teaching 38 students an hour, five hours a day, for 8 months… I started to get a little restless. So, during my lunch break I would start these drawings on the white board. It was a kind of stress release. I would give myself 25 minutes to finish something. They were just sketches that I enjoyed doing.

MNO: What tools did you use?

GE: I was using sumi ink, brushes, spray bottles, erasers, paper towels… anything I could find around my desk.

MNO: These projects were presumably all washed away – what appealed to you about creating a completely impermanent work?

GE: I could make them in 25 minutes, so they were not too incredibly precious to me. Yes, they were all washed away. I was kind of showing students what could be done with 25 minutes of time. They would come in from the previous day and be like… “what happened to that drawing that was up there yesterday?” I would explain that I washed it off and they would just be floored that someone would make something and then destroy it. Part of the exercise was to create something… to stay active while I was at school. Part of it was also to demonstrate something to my students…I was trying to convey something about value, something about impermanence and maybe something about using time to better oneself…to possibly interest them. Many of them were interested in the process.

Courtroom Suicide?

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 11:00 AM PDT

Moments after being convicted for arson of his Phoenix, Arizona, mansion, an ex-Wall Street trader collapsed and later died. Looking back at the video clip, authorities are now wondering if that was actually a case of courtroom suicide:

About 5 minutes later, he placed that drink bottle on the table. Once again buried his face in his hands, and for a second time appeared to place something else into his mouth.

A closer look shows he swallowed several times.

At 12:52, Marin took a final drink. A few seconds later, he turned to talk to the people sitting behind him.

A woman handed him tissue, and it's a downward spiral from there.

He began to convulse at first lightly. But quickly it grows more violent.

The Vice Presidents That History Forgot

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Schuyler Colfax

Writer Tony Horwitz visited the Quayle Vice Presidential Learning Center in Huntington, Indiana. It is the only museum dedicated to the 47 vice-presidents of the United States. Museum director Daniel Johns admits the title of second banana is not held in high regard.

"Ridicule is an occupational hazard of the job," Johns observes, leading me past political cartoons, newspaper invective and portraits of whiskered figures so forgotten that the museum has struggled to find anything to say or display about them. He pauses before a group portrait of Indiana's five VPs, a number that stirs Hoosier pride—except that the first, Schuyler Colfax, took bribes in a railroad scandal and died unrecognized on a railroad platform.

"His picture should be hung a little more crooked," Johns quips. He moves on to Colfax's successor, Henry Wilson, who died in office after soaking in a tub. Then comes William Wheeler, unknown even to the man at the top of the ticket in 1876. "Who is Wheeler?" Rutherford B. Hayes wrote upon hearing the quiet congressman suggested as his running mate.

The VP museum, which once used the advertising motto "Second to One," isn't kind to the nation's founders, either. It was they who are largely to blame for the rogues, also-rans and even corpses who have often filled the office. The Constitution gave almost no role to the vice president, apart from casting tie-breaking votes in the Senate. John Adams, the first to hold the job, called it "the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived."

The office may be insignificant, but the stories behind those who have held it are quite interesting, if not inspiring. Read about them at Smithsonian. Link -via Boing Boing

When the Olympic torch relay made its way through her town, she attended the event not in the traditional ceremonial garb of a mayor, but in an 8-foot-tall pink sausage costume! Happy’s Tail

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 08:45 AM PDT

Horse sanctuaries have taken in more horses than ever lately due to the economy. One of the horses at Hope Pastures Horse and Donkey Sanctuary in Leeds, England, is Happy, a 20-year-old former show-jumping horse, who recently got a new tail and a new home. Happy’s original tail had to be removed due to melanoma.

New owner Anita Elcome said: "The tail helps keep the flies away and not having one can also have a psychological impact.

"They swish their tails when they are angry or flick them when they are happy and not having one really does affect them.

"I think Happy will really enjoy having a tail back."

The tail, made of horse hair, normally costs around £70 but has been donated to Happy for free by Stockport-based company Horse Hair Extensions.

She added: "I saw his story on the website and just really liked the look of him.

"The fact that Happy didn't have a tail didn't put me off at all.

Happy’s new horsetail will soon be woven into his remaining hair. The accompanying photo shows where not to stand around a horse. Link -via Fark

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 30 Jun 2012 06:00 AM PDT

The temperature at home read 106 degrees yesterday, in an area not particularly known for being hot in the summer (or cold in the winter). If the heat wave is affecting your area, you might think about adjusting your traditional holiday plans. There’s nothing wrong with having a picnic inside, or after dark (just don’t forget the mosquito repellant). Also, fireworks will be particularly dangerous in areas where the grass is dried out from the heat. Maybe this is the year you should leave the fireworks displays to the professionals, barring a sudden change in the weather. And the usual advice stands: during a heat wave, you need to check on elderly relatives, friends, and neighbors, and make sure your animals have access to adequate water and shade at all times. And stay inside during the hottest part of the day! We’ll be here to keep you occupied. In case you’ve been working all week, here’s some great stuff you’ll want to catch up on:

Jill Harness gave us the stories and video clips of 6 Obscure Classic Cartoon Characters.

Eddie Deezen told us about Psycho: Alfred Hitchcock's Scariest Film.

The Legend of King Arthur came from Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader.

Mental_floss magazine gave us 10 Photos Politicians Regret.

The Sleep-Retardant Properties of My Ex-Girlfriend was a contribution from the Annals of Improbable Research.

We have a contest that is still open for entries! Guess What's Inside The Amazing Spider-Man Mystery Box is, of course, a movie-swag related guessing game, but you don’t have to be anywhere near right to win. This time it’s the funny answers that will win you neat stuff from the NeatoShop! But hurry, the contest will end soon.

In the What Is It? game, the scary-looking object in question is a chainsaw bumper spike, or dog bumper. It attaches to a chain saw and is held against a tree to help steady the saw while it cuts. Read more about it at the What Is It? blog. The first correct answer came from Berhard, who wins a t-shirt! The funniest answer came from Colin M, who said it was a "megalodonometer."

That's obviously a tool used be a Ichthyologist, they use it to measure the size of a sharks teeth, but only when they are still in the sharks mouth, hence the reason for the two bolt holes, which is used to mount to a stick, cause I do not know a Marine Biologist that would put their hand inside a sharks mouth.

That's good enough for a t-shirt from the NeatoShop! Thanks to everyone who played this week, and thanks to the What Is It? blog.

Besides the giveaways, the post with far and away the most comments was Supreme Court Upholds Obamacare, which is not at all surprising. Rainbow Oreo was a distant second, and nothing else was close enough to count.

If you aren’t checking out the Neatoramanauts’ Facebook page, you’re missing out on some neat stuff, like this candy contest. Readers were asked to ID “every one of these.” I like the commenter who said “they’re candy bars. where’s my t-shirt?” Ha! (Image credit: Rachel Been)

You can follow us on Twitter, too! And now we’re also on Google+ and Pinterest as well!

Have a happy Canada Day and a happy Fourth of July!
