5 Terrifying Animals That Could Save Your Life Someday

Posted: 30 Sep 2012 05:00 AM PDT

cSharks, vampire bats, crocodiles: the stuff of horror movies. Yes, these animals can kill you, but medical science is turning lemons into lemonade, so to speak. For example, the venom of a cobra:

Well, scientists think that part of what makes venom so nasty is that it suppresses the body's ability to fight back by hampering the immune system's normal healing process. So if you had a disease caused by an overactive immune system, a chemical that slows it down would be the proverbial vigilante crime fighter keeping a corrupt police department in check. This may be why in India cobra venom is considered an arthritis cure -- arthritis is caused by the body's own immune system keeping the sufferer's joints chronically inflamed.

So then you start looking at other even more horrible diseases, like multiple sclerosis and HIV -- both of which involve royal cock-ups in the immune system.

Pilot Proposes to Girlfriend While Pretending That Their Plane Is Crashing

It's beautiful when romance and terror come together in one loving moment. Ryan Thompson, a pilot, wanted to convince his lady friend to say 'yes'. So, naturally, he created the impression that the small plane that he was flying was about to crash.

My wife tells me that if I had done this, she would have punched me.

If Disney Villains Had Won

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 09:00 PM PDT

It seems like fan art is all "Disney, Disney, Disney!" these days, but once in a while a worthy collection of images presents itself, like this series by Justin Turrentine that imagines what the ending of popular Disney movies would have looked like if the villains had won.

Cruella gets her spotted coat, Ursula has one heck of a meal thanks to Flounder and Sebastian, and the Evil Queen gets a particularly gruesome present in a box.

Here's to the bad guys winning once in a while!

Yesterday, I featured Andrew Tuohy's amazing high speed photo of a handgun being fired underwater. Tuohy is more than just a firearms expert. He's also skilled craftsman. At the top, you can find a floral sculpture--a present for his mother--that he made from spent bullets. For the project pictured below, Tuohy set sapphires, topaz, tsavorite and peridot in, again, bullets that he fired and then recovered.

Roll Out the Burlap!

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 06:00 PM PDT

We roll out the red carpet for dignitaries and celebrities, but what about World War II fighters plane that need to land in battlefields without airstrips? For them, the Army rolled out the burlap:

A FACTOR in Allied victories on the Western Front has been the availability of airstrips for our fighters directly behind the battle lines.

Thanks to a new type of mat which resembles tar paper, Army engineers have been able to lay these emergency fields in record- breaking time. When a location suitable for an airfield has been rolled and graded, a device known as a “stamplicker,” towed by a truck, rolls over it strips of burlap material called “Hessian Mat.” These rolls are 100 yards long and 36 inches wide. As they pass through the rollers of the stamplicker, which is towed at a speed between 2-1/2 and 4 miles per hour, they are coated with a 50-50 solution of gasoline and asphalt, called “RC-3 cutback.”

The strips are laid with a 50 percent overlap and their seams are sealed with a special tar compound, the resultant surface having about the same non-skid properties as an asphalt highway.

Queen Victoria, Artist

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 01:00 PM PDT

Prince Albert

Among the Queen's talents was a gift for art. Victoria filled her notebooks with sketches and watercolors:

From her subtle yet rich watercolors to her seemingly austere but remarkably expressive black-and-white ink sketches (with a style reminiscent of Wendy MacNaughton’s), the drawings complement her observations of daily life and capture everything from members of the Royal Family to foreign military uniforms to the people and places the Queen encountered during her travels, and even her faithful dog.

Pictured above is Victoria's watercolor of her beloved Prince Albert.

Which Science Fiction Franchises Depict Space Warfare the Most Accurately?

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 10:50 AM PDT

Galactica and Pegasus

It's all speculative, of course. Humans have never engaged in a space naval battle...that we know about. Star Trek and the like aren't real, but physics is. So Foreign Policy interviewed naval analyst Chris Weuve about the real science behind interplanetary combat in science fiction:

FPWhat about ships turning in space like airplanes?

CW: Babylon 5 was closer in that it understood that there is no air in space and you don't bank. But even on that show, the ships would be under thrust, and then they decide to go back the way they come, they would spin around and almost immediately start going in the opposite direction. That doesn't work. They ignored the fact that acceleration is cumulative. But I do like that they can rotate in flight and fire sideways. Babylon 5 and the new Battlestar Galactica are far and away the best in trying to portray vector physics. There are a lot of problems with the way they do it, but I'm willing to give them an A for effort.

FPWhich are the most realistic sci-fi movies in portraying space warfare?

CW: There isn't any show that does a really good job across the board. Some do better at different parts. For example, the new Battlestar Galactica is probably the best at depicting life on board a ship. That ship is very spacious compared to a U.S. Navy warship, but the inside of it looks correct. One of my all-time favorite TV shows is Star Trek, especially Star Trek: The Next Generation. But one thing that drives me crazy is that on Star Trek, you're either on watch or off duty, when a real naval officer has a whole other job, such as being a department or division head. So he's constantly doing paperwork. Most shows don't get that right at all.

And which science fiction franchise is the worst in terms of the physics of flight? Star Wars. Read why at the link.

In Which Nation Is Beer the Cheapest? USA! USA! USA!

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 10:00 AM PDT

beer

Well, of course! Our national anthem began as a drinking song. That's the stock we come from. Behold our awesomeness:

Analysts at UBS, a Swiss bank, have calculated that it takes a German earning the national median wage just under seven minutes of work to purchase half a litre of beer at a retail outlet. At the bottom of the pint glass, low wages and high taxes mean that boozers in India must toil for nearly an hour before they have earned enough to quench their thirst.

This Week at Neatorama

Posted: 29 Sep 2012 07:02 AM PDT

Guess what I got for my birthday -a brand new iMac! It's a shame that these things go obsolete so fast, but if I had any kind of normal job, the old one would have been fine. The old Mac Mini will still serve me well by keeping the kids away from my new computer. Today I am backing up and migrating 67 GB of information. And that's after I deleted everything that wasn't crucial. I hope the new setup will allow me to be more efficient in bringing you neat stuff. That is, once I figure out how to make the text large enough to see. Meanwhile, in case you were busy, here are our exclusive features from the past week that you may want to catch up on.

David Israel presented some neat insights on what it's like to work with Curiosity in the article Now That’s Rocket Science: An Interview with JPL’s Steve Collins.

Jill Harness brought us Four of the World's Dumbest Animals.

Eddie Deezen gave us a couple of great articles, The Beatles' Final Film: Let It Be and When The World Series Opened on Yom Kippur.

The Annals of Improbable Research gave us Plucked From Obscurity: Aviators’ Safety Spinner.

Air Force One was a chapter from one of Uncle John's Bathroom Readers.

And the story of The Candy Bomber came from mental_floss magazine.

Over at the Halloween blog, we brought you Neatolicious Fun Facts: Salem, Massachusetts and 12 Gross Candies Perfect For Trick or Treaters, in addition to links on everything to do with Halloween! The Halloween blog will only get busier as we get into October.

In the What Is  It? game this week, the mystery item is a billiard cue lock (you gotta pay if you wanna play). Anker had that one right, and wins a t-shirt from the NeatoShop!  The funniest answer cam from Malyss, who described a "manicure manacle:"

It is an extreme manicure manacle. Normally, you would find these in pairs and they would be bolted onto the arms of chairs at a nail salon. The person having the extreme manicure would place their wrists through the manacle and the salon associate would lock the customer's wrists into place before beginning the manicure.

That's good for a t-shirt, too! Thanks to everyone who played, and be sure to check out all the mystery items at the What Is It? blog.

There was a tie for the posts with the most comments, between We Are Hungry and Should Seat Belts for Pets be Mandatory? Those are both open for more discussion.

Neatoramanauts also have discussions about various items at our social networking sites, Facebook, Twitter,Google+, and Pinterest as well. In fact, if you have any kudos, criticisms, suggestions, additions, or you just want to say hi, you can comment right here! And thanks.
