The Only Mother and Son to Each Have #1 Records

Posted: 06 Nov 2012 05:00 AM PST

bNeatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website.

In November of 1966, The Monkees' first single "Last Train to Clarksville" went to number one on the charts, two months (to the day) after The Monkees TV series premiered. The Partridge Family, a TV series semi-similar to The Monkees, actually beat that record. The Partridge Family premiered on ABC on September 25, 1970. The Partridge Family single "I Think I Love You" hit the number one spot on the charts four days shy of two months after the series' premiere.

The stars of The Partridge Family (a series about a fictional singing family/rock group) were Shirley Jones and David Cassidy. Although there were two other very talented performers on the show (Susan Dey and Danny Bonaduce), Jones and Cassidy were the only two members of the cast to appear on Partridge Family records. Suzanne Crough and Jeremy Gelbwaks (later replaced by Brian Forster) were also featured on the show, but were fairly nominal characters.

vInterestingly, although there was a huge uproar about The Monkees (another series about a fictional rock group) "not really playing their instruments," no such fuss was ever made regarding The Partridge Family.

Shirley Jones had an almost perfect storybook Hollywood career. She had starred in such classics as Carousel, Oklahoma, and The Music Man. Although known as a typical movie "good girl," she won an Academy Award for the movie Elmer Gantry in 1960, in which she played a prostitute. So Shirley Jones is actually on a very short list of actors and actresses who have won an Oscar and had a #1 record.

Shirley had already been cast as the mother of The Partridge Family before the rest of the cast were hired. But the producers of The Partridge Family were wary and worried about casting Shirley's stepson, David Cassidy, to play her son in the show. At this point in time, of course, no one knew much about David Cassidy or what he would bring to the show. But it was soon realized that David would be the springboard and centerpiece for the entire series. After a few episodes, he became a teen idol to millions of swooning teeny-boppers all over America, and soon, the world.

It is unequivocal that, although the rest of the cast was very talented, David Cassidy was the show's bread-and-butter, the runaway star. Cassidy skyrocketed into a multimillion-dollar franchise, the likes of which television had never seen before. David Cassidy records, photos, posters, t-shirts notebooks, choker necklaces, et al, brought the network millions of dollars in merchandising.

Although The Partridge Family was a pretty popular TV show, David Cassidy soon became a franchise unto himself and a huge cottage industry. Cassidy, as far as millions of teenage girls were concerned, was the Elvis Presley of the early '70s.

uAccording to Shirley, "They were very frightened about hiring David because they knew he was my stepson and they didn't know how our relationship was. They didn't know if we hated each other. So they came to me very sheepishly and said, 'We tested David and really feel he's the best for the role. How do you feel about it?'" Shirley loved the idea.

The truth was, in real life, David loved Shirley very much. He said he had originally "wanted to hate" her, after he saw his parents divorce and Shirley stepped in. But he immediately loved her for her warmth and kindness. "We really based our love and friendship on an adult relationship, an offset to me being his [step]mother," says Shirley. Still, that was her role in the TV studio.

In the recording studio, she admits she had a small part. "I did very little in the recording studio," Shirley recalled. "I literally was the background vocals for David. It was very unusual for me. I never thought I'd have a gold record. Of course, I didn't do much to get it. But nevertheless, it hangs on my wall and I'm proud of it."

The single "I Think I Love You" was featured in the first episode of the series. It hit the number one spot on the Hot 100 chart on November 21, 1970 and remained at the top for three weeks. "I Think I Love You" is still a perennial favorite and remains a bubblegum classic.

(YouTube link)

But David Cassidy was Shirley Jones' stepson. Wasn't the title of this article The Only Mother and Son to Each Have #1 Records? Okay, let me finish.

jThe Partridge Family was a hit series that ran on ABC from 1970 to 1974. An infrequent visitor to the set was Shirley Jones' actual son (and David Cassidy's half-brother) Shaun. After seeing David's huge success as a singer, he wanted to make a record himself. His mother, Shirley Jones, strongly advised him against it -she advised him to pursue an acting career before recording. But he was convinced he could duplicate David's success -and he was right!

On July 16, 1977, Shaun Cassidy's record "Da Doo Ron Ron" made it to the top of the charts. And to this day, Shirley Jones and Shaun Cassidy remain the only mother and son to each have a #1 record.

Election Day in the USA

Posted: 06 Nov 2012 04:30 AM PST

The first election results are in, from tiny Dixville Notch, New Hampshire. The tiny town is famous for opening its polling place at midnight on Election Day and voting -and reporting- the results immediately. This morning, ten citizens cast their vote, and in the presidential race, there was a tie: five votes each for President Obama and Mitt Romney. However, in Hart's Location, New Hampshire, which also opened the voting for just a short time at midnight, Obama got 23 votes and Romney received nine. Most polling places across the country will be open for a large part of the day, and results will not be announced until tonight. Link

To find out the polling hours and locations for your community, one handy resource is Vote411. You can enter your address and bring up exact information, with alternate links if you want to double-check. Or you can scroll down the sidebar and enter a state. I entered "New York" and found plenty of information and links about how voting will go on in the wake of hurricane Sandy. Link

The Narrowest House in the World Opens

Posted: 06 Nov 2012 02:00 AM PST

Last year, Adrienne told us about the narrowest house being built in Warsaw, Poland. Architect Jakub Szczesny wanted to convert a 3-foot-wide void between two buildings into an actual house. The idea seemed preposterous, but he persevered, found a buyer and actually got the house built!

Behold, the Keret House, the narrowest house in the world:

Mr. Szczesny, 39, began to imagine an ideal resident for the home, and settled on Etgar Keret, an Israeli writer whose reputation for producing collections of very short stories, like his most recent “Suddenly, a Knock on the Door,” marked him as someone accustomed to working within tight parameters, and whose Jewish heritage and Polish roots offered a moving connection to Warsaw. (As a child during World War II, the author’s mother smuggled food past Nazi checkpoints just steps from where Mr. Szczesny hoped to build.)

When Mr. Keret, 45, received a call from the architect, he was initially puzzled. “This guy with a very heavy Polish accent said he wanted to make a house in proportion to my stories,” he said. “It sounded like a prank.” But Mr. Szczesny flew to Tel Aviv, where the author lives, and proved himself sincere. And Mr. Keret liked the idea that his family would reclaim a home of sorts in Warsaw.

Last week, after more than a year of bureaucratic tangles and engineering challenges, and with the crucial aid of a crane shipped in from Germany, Keret House opened its doors — or door. At just four feet across at its widest, and a mere 28 inches at its narrowest point, it may be the world’s thinnest home.

Idris Elba and Mumford and Sons

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 11:00 PM PST

Fantastic Four The Thing

One of the internet's favorite actors, Idris Elba, has teamed up with one of the internet's favorite bands, Mumford and Sons. I personally have always liked Elba, ever since his role as Stringer Bell in The Wire. He was also in Prometheus (a film I wanted desperately to like but didn't), Thor, American Gangsters, The Office (!), and a few other things. He grew up in Canning Town, East London, so it is no stretch of the imagination that he would like Mumford and Sons. Originally found here, you can also watch the video on youtube.

Play It Again (and Again and Again), Sam: 10 Crazy Sequels to Casablanca

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 08:00 PM PST

Casablanca may have ended with the beginning of a beautiful friendship, but that hasn't stopped filmmakers from trying to drag the story out. Most recently, director Cass Warner of Warner Sisters has decided to tackle Return to Casablanca, a tale focusing on the son of Rick and Ilsa (raised by Ilsa and Victor Laszlo) who sets out to find his real father.

Obviously, film buffs are not feeling it, but Warner isn't onto anything new: this is just the latest in a long line of Casablanca follow-ups, beginning as early as 1943, just a year after the original film's release. For reasons we probably don't have to explain, none of the sequels have been particularly successful.

Brazzaville (1943)
Shortly after Casablanca won the Best Picture Oscar, Warner Bros. announced plans to release a sequel titled Brazzaville based on the further adventures of Rick and Captain Renault. But the studio rejected the story that writer Frederic Stephani outlined — which intended to reveal that Rick and Renault had secretly been Allied operatives all along — and the idea of a sequel was soon scrapped altogether.

Casablanca TV series (1955-1956)
For ABC's "Warner Bros. Presents," the studio's first foray into television, execs conceived a Charles McGraw-starring prequel to Casablanca, set in the years before the events of the original. In a strained bid for credibility, minor actors from the film were cast in major roles for the series, including Dan Seymour (who played a bodyguard in the film) as Ferrari, and Marcel Dalio (who played a crooked roulette table operator in the film) as Captain Renault. The series was mercifully canceled after one low-rated season.

Happy Couples Divorcing in China to Get More Land

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 06:00 PM PST

There's a rush of happy couples filing for quickie divorce in China. Why? It turns out that divorced couples get twice the building plots than married ones:

Under the new build scheme in Guiyang, Guizhou province, southern China, single people are entitled to one building plot each while married couples get just one.

Now officials say more than five hundred couples have filed for quickie divorces so they can get two plots instead of one.

"Me and my husband are very happy. But all of our neighbiours, all of our friends and all of our family have divorced so what can we do?" said newly single Guo Chaoqing, 65.

"If my wife, I, our son and his daughter all get divorced we'll get four plots. We can't get left behind," he added.

8 Wonderful Terraced Pools Around the World

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 04:00 PM PST

Looks ice cold, doesn't it? Actually, the water is quite warm at the Pamukkale terraces in Turkey. The white formations are deposits of minerals from spring water that built up into a series of dams, making the terraced pools what they are. That process is typical of the eight places featured in this list, although the geography and minerals (and therefore the appearance) of the terraces varies. The pictures are gorgeous! Don't underestimate that little scooter. He's saved the rebellion more than once. Morgan, a Geekologie reader, rides this glorious Vespa:

This was done with adhesive vinyl, some meticulous cutting and a 12-pack of beer. It gets a lot of looks and thumbs up, and often times while I am sitting at a stop light someone crossing the street will pause to take notice. The rear trunk is a real vintage piece and I removed the original faded travel stickers and replaced them with various retro style Star Wars art and posters that I found on the internet.

... Is Like Facebook

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST

Ah, Facebook. In Facebook's Facebook page (yes, there is such a thing), the social media giant compares itself to many things like:

Halloween ("Halloween lets people express themselves. That is why Halloween is like Facebook")

... swimming pools ("Swimming pools are filled with people. Some you know. Some you don't. And every once in a while you see something that maybe you shouldn't.")

But my favorite is this one, where Facebook compares itself to birthday cake:

In it, Facebook admits that "[cakes] give friends a place to gather and celebrate. But too much cake probably isn't healthy. So birthday cake is a lot like Facebook." Get that? Too much Facebook isn't healthy. Straight from the horse's mouth.

So what else is like Facebook? My vote goes to booze. Booze gives you the courage to speak your mind and express yourself. But sometimes it also gets you into trouble. Lots of trouble. That's why booze is a lot like Facebook.

Your turn, Neatoramanauts.

Smart People Drink More Booze

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 12:30 PM PST

Drink a lot of alcohol? That's because you're smart! Here's a study showing that smart children in the UK and the United States grow up to drink more alcohol than their dumber counterparts:

... more intelligent children, both in the United Kingdom and the United States, grow up to consume alcohol more frequently and in greater quantities than less intelligent children. Controlling for a large number of demographic variables, such as sex, race, ethnicity, religion, marital status, number of children, education, earnings, depression, satisfaction with life, frequency of socialization with friends, number of recent sex partners, childhood social class, mother's education, and father's education, more intelligent children grow up to drink more alcohol in the UK and the US. [...]

The data come from the National Child Development Study (NCDS) in the United Kingdom. There is a clear monotonic association between childhood intelligence (measured before the age of 16) and the frequency of alcohol consumption in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. "Very bright" British children grow up to consume alcohol nearly one full standard deviation more frequently than their "very dull" classmates.

So go ahead, drink up! Satoshi Kanazawa of Psychology Today has the post: Link - via Discovery News

The Fascinating History Of The Garbage Truck

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 12:00 PM PST

b

Once upon a time, city garbage was removed by crews in horse-drawn wagons. Men lifted every bit by hand and if they overfilled the wagon, debris would fly off the top as the wagon proceeded.

The idea of an enclosed trash truck, so things wouldn't fly out at speed, was started in Europe in the 1920s. It's actually kind of amazing it took someone that long to think of that, but anyway. The Americans thought of the waste hauler we're more familiar with today, the external hopper truck.

But the reason these trucks surged in popularity was because of a man named George Roby Dempster.

Dempster was from Knoxville, Tenn. and a businessman who made his mark in construction and road building before the Great Depression wiped him out. With a background in stuff that required heavy machinery, though, Dempster knew how much labor was required in hauling stuff. He saw garbage trucks of the time and the amount of effort needed for men to throw things into the bed of a truck.

If the name sounds familiar, it's because of Dempster's invention that revolutionized the trash collection industry. Read about it at Jalopnik. Link -via the Presurfer

Sea Otter Outsmarts Killer Whale

Posted: 05 Nov 2012 11:30 AM PST

I have always though killer whales were beautiful animals, that being said they pale in comparison to how cute I find sea otters. Part of this video is very tragic, knowing that mother otter lost her child, but I still find it amazing that the otter managed to outwit the whales. In the battle of sea otters versus killer whales, I am strongly in the sea otter camp.

The Glass Temple

temple

The Arulmigu Sri Raja Kaliamman Temple in Johor, Malaysia is a marvel to behold. This Hindu temple is made almost entirely out of colored glass--300,000 pieces of it. Sri Sinathambhy, the temple president, described how he developed the idea:

He added that he conceptualised the design while riding in a motorised taxi (tuk tuk), during a trip to Bangkok.

“I saw something shimmering from afar and told the driver to take me towards the light.

“I finally came to a Buddhist temple that had a piece of glasswork at its entrance and I was amazed by the beauty of the piece,” he said.

Sinathambhy said he expanded on the idea to build a temple that would be fully embellished with coloured glass.
