The phones of CES 2013
LAS VEGAS--As the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show winds down, it's time to evaluate the devices that came out of the show. As expected, the market's big players did not offer much in the way of new hardware. Nokia, Samsung and Research In Motion all decided to withhold large smartphone announcements for another day, possibly at future trade shows or even their own media events. Into that void stepped a number of up-and-coming companies, including Huawei, ZTE and TCL's Alcatel One Touch. Thus, it's worth taking a look back at the phones that were announced during this year's CES and to discuss what makes them important (or not important, as the case may be). In wireless, what is the conversion rate from free to paid?

By Mike Dano Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Mike Dano

MVNO FreedomPop said that around 30 percent of its subscribers opt for its paid tiers of service. The figure is notable because it finally shines a light on a strategy that wireless carriers have been testing for years: offering a small amount of wireless data for free in the hopes users will purchase more.

Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) was one of the nation's first wireless carriers to dip its toe into the "freemium" mobile data market. At the end of 2010 the carrier announced that it would offer 100 MB per month for free to people who purchased Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) first batch of laptops running its Chrome operating system. The offer no longer appears to be available.

In the intervening years, a number of other companies have tried similar tactics. Most notably, FreedomPop launched an MVNO service on Clearwire's (NASDAQ:CLWR) network offering 500 MB of data in the hopes users would upgrade to paid data tiers or would purchase one of its various value-added services. Just last week, T-Mobile USA joined the fray with its new 4G Connect program, which provides 200 MB of free data to notebook, tablet and ultrabook users.

The freemium model--a portmanteau of "free" and "premium"--is similar to the idea of a "loss leader" in the retail world where a product is sold below its market cost in order to stimulate additional sales (think inexpensive TVs at Walmart on Black Friday). The freemium model is heavily used in the mobile content area, where mobile gaming companies and other app makers offer a free version of their app in the hopes users will like it and opt to buy a paid version with additional features. Mobile analytics company Flurry found that around 3 percent of mobile app users upgrade to a paid tier.

But FreedomPop's initial data shows that the free-to-paid conversion rate for wireless data is much higher than that, at around 30 percent. FreedomPop CEO Stephen Stokols attributed the figure to the fact that FreedomPop users must first invest as much as $100 for a FreedomPop device before they can make use of the service, potentially priming them for additional expenses. He also pointed out that the company has customers' credit cards on file, making purchases as simple as touching a button...Continued

1. Report: Apple cuts iPhone 5 component orders on weaker demand

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) slashed its orders for components for the iPhone 5 because of weaker-than-expected demand, according to multiple reports, sending Apple's shares down in the process.

apple stock

Apple's stock has declined since a September high, according to Yahoo Finance.

The reports, first from Japan's Nikkei and then also the Wall Street Journal, said Apple cut its orders for screens for the new gadget from suppliers like Sharp and LG by about half of what it had previously planned for the first quarter of 2013. Nikkei reported that Apple dropped its original target of 65 million screens to about half that, citing an unidentified senior executive at a component maker it didn't name. Meanwhile, the Journal reported, also citing unnamed sources, that Apple has reduced its orders for other components.

Apple's stock fell much as 4.5 percent to $497 per share in early U.S. trading, according to Bloomberg. The shares have lost 26 percent from a September peak.

Apple sold 26.9 million iPhones in its fiscal fourth quarter ahead of the holiday season, but the company is expected to report a blockbuster December quarter when it reports earnings later this month. The prior quarter only represented nine days' worth of sales of the iPhone 5, which went on sale Sept. 21.

The reported cut in components could indicate weakening demand for the iPhone 5 after a rush of orders late last year. It also could point to the effects of Apple's intense competition with Samsung Electronics, which was the world's largest smartphone maker by volume in the third quarter, thanks in large part to its flagship Galaxy S III device. However, the first quarter is typically a weaker quarter seasonally for handset makers than the fourth quarter, and it is unclear how Apple's sales are actually trending in the market so far this quarter.

Earlier this month research firm Strategy Analytics predicted that Samsung would widen tis lead over Apple this year. "We expect Samsung to slightly extend its lead over Apple this year because of its larger multitier product portfolio," Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston told Reuters.

2. Study: Smartphone users gobble more data than tablet subscribers

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Smartphone users are actually consuming more data on a per-user basis than tablet subscribers for the first time, according to a new research report from network technology firm Arieso. The finding is notable because tablet users are often seen as the most data-hungry because of their propensity to use their gadgets for video and other media consumption.

Click here for a full list of data usage by device.

The report was the third-annual study from Arieso analyzing mobile network trends. Arieso, which advises carriers in the United States, Europe and Asia, as well as companies including Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Nokia Siemens Networks, found that out of the top 10 most data-intensive devices (excluding USB modems) six were smartphones, three were tablets and one was a phablet. The tablets on the list were at Nos. 4, 8 and 9.

Arieso found that users of the Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone 5 consume more downlink data than any other smartphone user the firm studied and more than four times the amount of benchmark iPhone 3G users. While the addition of LTE in the iPhone 5 is likely a cause of this, Arieso did not take a firm position, but it noted that a faster processor and better display were likely factors. The firm also found that one Samsung Galaxy S III user generates on average almost as much uplink data as four iPhone 3G users, and that the HTC Sensation XL generated the most signaling traffic per user of any device.

"Apple, Samsung and HTC each had devices that were consistently consuming more data than tablets," Arieso CTO and study author Michael Flanagan told FierceWireless. "That was the most surprising detail from this report."

Arieso reported that the hungriest 1 percent of all subscribers consume 40 percent of the downlink data volume, which is actually down from 50 percent the firm reported last year. The firm attributed the change to normal market dynamics and no one specific reason. Arieso noted that USB modems made up 54 percent of the top 1 percent of data users, while smartphones accounted for 40 percent and tablets made up 6 percent.

In response to all of this data traffic, Arieso noted that more and more operators are turning to small cells to augment their macro cellular networks. However, Flanagan said that carriers need to be judicious about where they deploy small cells to get the most capacity bang for their buck and that there is a diminishing return in network investment beyond the first two or three small cells deployed in a congested part of the network.

In the North American market in particular, where LTE penetration is strong, carriers will be focused on building out their macro LTE networks. Flanagan said operators need to focus on where customers are actually using the network and are in need of capacity when deciding how to deploy or augment LTE coverage.

3. Verizon not the only carrier eyeing LTE Broadcast

By Tammy Parker Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

A top executive confirmed Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) is working to deliver multicast video to customers using LTE Broadcast, a technology other mobile operators including Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR) are reportedly starting to consider.

Last week, Verizon Communications Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam said during a keynote at the 2013 International CES that the company's wireless unit is aiming to broadcast video over its LTE network, perhaps by early 2014. McAdam told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was onstage with him, "Using LTE...we'd love to broadcast the Super Bowl in the 2014 time frame," according to Computerworld.

Regarding McAdam's comment, Verizon spokeswoman Debi Lewis told FierceBroadbandWireless, "I think the Super Bowl reference is just an example of a scenario for this, nothing specific."

But in a blog post on Verizon Wireless' website, Joe Constantine, vice president and CTO at Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC), said Verizon is using Ericsson's evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS) technology "to make video a winning experience during a major event," and he cited a football stadium with "100,000 spectators, 100,000 perspectives and 100,000 different video experiences on thousands of different devices."

Constantine said LTE Broadcast will enable wireless customers to access multiple camera angles, feeds and stats from live broadcast video, directly on their smartphone or other wireless device.

In November at the LTE North America conference, Clearwire CTO John Saw said that the operator is eyeing both broadcast and unicast for video delivery and is looking forward to advanced eMBMS features that will be included in 3GPP Release 12, according to telecoms.com. That release is slated for completion in June 2014.

In addition, other mobile operators are eyeing LTE Broadcast as a capability to be deployed after they get their initial LTE networks up and running rather than as part of their initial service, said iGR Research, which just issued a white paper on the technology

The research firm said none of the operators interviewed for its white paper reported firm LTE Broadcast implementation plans. It is likely that Verizon will be a pioneer in LTE Broadcast, particularly given that the operator has actually been talking about the capability for more than two years.

Verizon demonstrated LTE Broadcast at CES in collaboration with Ericsson and Qualcomm (NASDAQ:QCOM), which provided prototype handheld solutions, said Lewis in her own blog post. Companies such as MobiTV, Media Excel and Thompson Video Networks helped create the application and content.

Multichannel News noted McAdam did not mention whether Verizon Wireless' LTE Broadcast efforts might be connected to the marketing and joint development agreements the company has with cable operators Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications and Bright House Networks. Those partnerships were formed via Verizon's $3.9 billion purchase of nationwide AWS spectrum from the cable operators in a deal finally approved by regulators last summer.

Broadcast LTE, or eMBMS, was originally defined in Release 8 and 9 of the 3GPP standards and has been enhanced in Releases 10 and 11, noted iGR.

"While there are some current concerns and issues, on balance, the [mobile network operators] appear to see the fact that the LTE Broadcast ecosystem is already defined, supported and growing as a major benefit," said iGR.

LTE Broadcast can be a useful tool for helping network operators increase the capacity of their networks, said Iain Gillott, iGR's president and founder.

LTE Broadcast could potentially offload 12.5 percent of the video data traffic from unicast overall and 15 percent during peak hours in 2016 if deployed across a metro market, said Gillott. The service could also offload 30 percent of the total mobile data network traffic attributed to audio overall and 45 percent during peak hours in 2016. Ultimately, LTE Broadcast could offload up to 11.5 percent of the total daily demand per subscriber and 14.7 percent during the peak hours.

"For the U.S. mobile operators, the amount of network capacity built in 2016 could be reduced by 9.8 percent if LTE Broadcast were deployed, equivalent to an overall potential saving of $4.21 billion," said iGR. The firm said large U.S. operators could see savings of $60 [million] to $100 million in 2016 alone from full deployment of LTE Broadcast.

Not only can LTE Broadcast distribute content such as live events and media, it can also be used for background file and software delivery and group information distribution. Unforeseen revenue streams might also be enabled by LTE Broadcast, as occurred with mobile broadband, said iGR.

According to the firm, benefits of LTE Broadcast from the mobile operator's perspective include the fact that the service requires no changes to consumer devices with compatible chipsets and middleware. Further, no hardware changes are required to the LTE RAN.

But iGR said operators are concerned that benefits of the LTE Broadcast business case are not yet quantified, and they are undecided about how LTE Broadcast should be deployed. Further, the technology would require changes to backend systems for device software and firmware updates.

4. Samsung passes 100M milestone in sales of Galaxy S smartphones

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Samsung Electronics said global sales of its flagship Galaxy S smartphone line have now surpassed 100 million, a milestone that highlights Samsung's position at the top of the smartphone heap.

Of the total, Samsung said the original Galaxy S, released in 2010, has 24 million sales; the S II, released in 2011, has 40 million; and the S III, released in 2012, has achieved more than 40 million unit sales as well. The announcement comes a little more than two months after Samsung revealed that S III sales had hit 30 million. In the past Samsung has indicated that these "sales" figures indicate sell-in to sales channels and not sell-through figures to end users; the company did so again when talking about the S III sales.

Still, the milestone is an impressive mark for Samsung, which in three years has gone from smartphone also-ran to the top smartphone vendor in the world by volume, largely on the back of its Galaxy line. The position also makes Samsung the largest vendor of Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android phones.

Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone reached the 100-million-sales point in March 2011, nearly four years after the introduction of the first iPhone in 2007. However, the smartphone market was still very nascent in 2007 and 2008 and it could be argued that Apple's trailblazing success made Samsung's emergence possible.

Samsung is widely expected to unveil the Galaxy S IV at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, next month. Analysts think Samsung can maintain its smartphone lead over Apple this year, though pressure has also been building for Samsung to catch up to Apple in services with offerings that rival Apple's iTunes for music and video consumption.

5. Rumor Mill: Softbank to sell stake in eAccess to asuage Japanese regulators

By Phil Goldstein Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Softbank plans to sell around 67 percent of its stake in Japanese telecoms company eAccess to Samsung Electronics and others in a bid to ease concerns from Japanese regulators that it owns too much spectrum, according to multiple reports.

The rumored deal comes as Softbank and Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) seek regulatory approval for Softbank's $20.1 billion purchase of 70 percent of Sprint, which will involve a substantial acquisition of spectrum and may raise similar concerns from U.S. regulators.

The reports, from Reuters and Nikkei, cited unnamed sources who said Softbank is looking to offload the stake to Samsung and perhaps 10 other companies, including Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) and Nokia Siemens Networks. Nikkei reported that if Softbank slashes its eAccess stake to below one-third, Softbank will be able to skirt Japanese government policy on spectrum allocation and ease concerns that it holds a monopoly on airwaves. Softbank bought eAccess for $1.84 billion in October as part of a battle with rival KDDI.

The rumored deal is notable in light of the significant amount of spectrum Softbank will own if it acquires Sprint. Sprint is also in the process of acquiring Clearwire (NASDAQ:CLWR), which commands around 160 MHz of spectrum in the top 100 markets. The Clearwire deal is contingent on Softbank's deal for Sprint being approved.

However, Sprint's deal for Clearwire has been complicated by Dish Network, which last week announced an unsolicited counterbid for Clearwire. Dish has also argued that Softbank and Sprint would hold too much spectrum if the two deals go through.

According to Reuters, Softbank said over the weekend that it had no news to announce, but that it continues to consider its options regarding its shareholdings.
