Things That Make You Go, Why?

by Rob Goldman

I recently spent time with a close friend who I now refer to privately as "Y." For the record, there is no "Y" in his name. Frankly, while I love him like a brother he is a royal pain in the ass. He is a voracious learner of anything and everything, although I suspect he is driven by an innate desire to pontificate on all subjects under the sun.  Some of us Americans would scratch our heads and just refer to him as an arrogant European, while others would be charmed by his culture.

I bring this up because the topic of investing popped us, as usual, on his last visit to my home. Look, it's only natural that the topic be discussed. It's one that I enjoy and - at least according to some - is an area in which I have some knowledge and expertise. On this occasion, however, I found myself wanting to throttle the man for his incessant use of the word "why" when asking about the investing world.

After he left ... and I had a drink to calm my nerves ... I realized that "Y" was actually onto something.

Eyes Front!

Today is April 1st. This is notable for a couple of reasons.

First, it marks the beginning of the second fiscal quarter for most companies and, of course, the stock market. Now that we are in a new period, will the upward market momentum continue or will we begin to recede back to earth? Will negative pre-announcements rule the day? We have written recently that this quarter will likely mark the beginning of the decline many market watchers have been waiting for. More on that in a moment.

Another reason why April 1st is notable is that the day is referred to as April Fool's Day or All Fool's Day (or my birthday judging by some of my picks.)  April Fool's Day is celebrated with practical jokes and, in some cases, story spoofs by the media. A colleague once recommended that on April 1st I should release a gag blog, report, newsletter, etc. and that it would likely be well received.
