| Peter Coyne | We begin with a reader's attempt at a haiku. No doubt it would make Bill Bonner and Otis Redding proud:
"Mobs, Messiahs and markets too, Empire of Debt -- U.S. of I Owe U, There's really not that much left to say... Just sitting here on the dock of the bay, Waiting for financial reckoning day." Our market outlook and most of our projects in five lines? And it rhymes? Bravo.
The big news this week? Gold dropped below $1,200 for the first time in three years. Just two days prior to the drop, Lauren Lyster of Yahoo's Daily Ticker mentioned @DailyReckoning in a tweet regarding the yellow metal.
She was quoting our own Byron King on the spread between the cost of bringing an ounce of gold out of the ground and selling it. Now that spread has become nonexistent. "Probably another reason why the Chinese government urges its citizens to buy gold and silver..." responds a reader to the price drop.
Maybe. We were unimpressed with "China's whimper" this week, so we decided to examine America's bipolar future instead. After all, it's what inspired this year's Vancouver Investment Symposium theme, "The Tale of Two Americas."
Pivoting to next week, with the Fourth of July upon us, we want to know: Has America strayed from its roots... or is it still a shining city on a hill? Send us your "idea of America" at dr@dailyreckoning.com
