1. Report: Apple testing iPhones and iPads with larger screens

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has asked its component suppliers to test iPhone and iPad screens larger than the ones currently available, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The report, which cited unnamed sources at the company's suppliers, said Apple recently asked them to test prototype smartphone screens larger than the 4-inch screen of the iPhone 5 and tablet screens measuring a little less than 13 inches diagonally. The iPad has a 9.7-inch screen and the iPad mini has 7.9-inch screen.

It's unclear if the prototypes will be brought to market, but the timing of the tests suggests that they are not going to be used for models that will appear in the coming months. As the report notes, Apple regularly tests different designs for its products as they are developed.

Apple declined to comment, according to the report.

Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the issue of larger screens for the iPhone in late May at AllThingsD's D11 conference, and the trade-offs that would be associated with such a move. He said there is clearly a market for larger-screened devices. "What our customers want is for us to weigh those and come out with a decision," he said. "At this point, we've felt that the Retina display that we are shipping is overwhelmingly the best. But that's why those trade-offs exist. So in a hypothetical world where the trade-offs didn't exist, you could see that be one of the things that differentiates."

This isn't the first time Apple has been reported to be working on devices with larger screens. In June, citing unnamed sources, including those in Apple's supply chain in Asia, Reuters reported that Apple is thinking about releasing at least two bigger iPhones next year, one with a 4.7-inch screen and one with a 5.7-inch screen. However, the report noted, it's unclear if Apple will go through with the plans, even though suppliers have been approached about the possibility.

For the first time, last year Apple increased the screen size on the iPhone, to four inches, for the iPhone 5. Other smartphone vendors too have been increasing screen sizes: Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S4 sports a 5-inch display, the Nokia (NYSE:NOK) Lumia 925 offers a 4.5-inch display and HTC's One includes a 4.7-inch display. Concurrently, some vendors are traveling in the opposite direction: The Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and the recently announced HTC One mini both offer 4.3-inch screens.

2. HTC brings Mackenzie back to lead Americas unit, creates emerging devices biz

HTC is once again making Jason Mackenzie, its president of global sales, the leader of its Americas business. The company is also creating an emerging devices unit, though it's unclear what that will be focused on.

According to an internal HTC email that the company confirmed to the Wall Street Journal, HTC CEO Peter Chou announced the changes in an effort to build on the success of its flagship smartphone, the HTC One.

"Effective immediately, in addition to his current duties in supporting me with global corporate strategy, [President of Global Sales] Jason Mackenzie will lead HTC America," Chou wrote in the email on Sunday. "[President of North America] Mike Woodward will lead Emerging Devices, a newly established business unit that will focus on innovative new HTC products and global distribution strategies." Chou did not elaborate on the emerging devices unit.

Mackenzie previously was HTC's president for the Americas for a year before moving up the ladder to lead global sales and marketing in 2011; he has been the head of global sales strategy since the fall of 2012. Woodward was hired from AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) last summer, where he was the vice president of AT&T's consumer wireless device and accessory portfolio.

"I want to thank these two outstanding leaders for their contributions to the success of the HTC One so far," Chou wrote of Mackenzie and Woodward. "But as you know and would expect, we also need to do more. With the success of the One, we have many new opportunities both to expand current sales as well as to enter new distribution channels with new business models."

The reshuffling at HTC comes after a series of executive departures in recent months. Outgoing executives include COO Matthew Costello, Chief Product Officer Kouji Kodera, Jason Gordon, HTC's vice president of global communications, and President of South Asia Operations Lennard Hoornick. Chou and Mackenzie have played down the departures.

The indication of an emerging devices unit at HTC is notable in light of product announcements and reports that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Samsung Electronics, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), Sony Mobile Communications and Motorola Mobility are all working on wearable computing projects.

HTC's front-office shakeup comes shortly after the company reported that its second-quarter net profit declined 83 percent to $41.6 million, down from $245.4 million a year earlier and missing analysts' estimates of a $66.3 million profit for the quarter. The company had hoped that sales of the One smartphone would help it rebound, but HTC's revenue also declined 22 percent to $2.34 billion, down from $3.02 billion a year earlier.

HTC's latest smartphone is the One mini, a smaller version of its flagship One smartphone, which the company hopes will help extend the One brand by reaching a wider range of consumers. HTC said the One mini will be available in "select markets" starting in August and rolled out globally in September, but the company did not reveal pricing, specific availability or which U.S. carriers will offer the One mini.

3. Ericsson CEO says Wi-Fi will be standard small cell feature

Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) expects to enable Wi-Fi, with few exceptions, in all of its small cell equipment, which certain mobile operators are expected to start deploying in the fourth quarter.

Hans Vestberg, Ericsson

Vestberg (Image source: Ericsson)

Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg told GigaOM that although not all carriers will take advantage of the Wi-Fi capability in their small cells, the infrastructure vendor intends to take this opportunity to seed the market with Wi-Fi nodes. He didn't name the carriers that would roll out the technology.

Carriers will be able to upgrade their small cells to offer Wi-Fi via two primary methods, depending upon equipment configuration. Boards could be slotted into a small cell chassis or, in some cases, a software patch delivered over the cellular network might be all that is needed to enable Wi-Fi communications.

Ericsson jumped onto the Wi-Fi bandwagon more than one year ago, when it acquired BelAir Networks. BelAir's technology has now been fully integrated into Ericsson's small cell equipment, enabling operators to roll out small cell and Wi-Fi functionality, with Wi-Fi being integrated directly into the cellular network, Vestberg said.

In true HetNet fashion, Ericsson's approach will treat macrocells, small cells as well as Wi-Fi nodes as part of a single network. The company's technology will handle "handover from macro to micro, micro to Wi-Fi and back to micro or macro all over again," Vestberg said.

Operators that are considered likely to deploy Ericsson small cells starting this year include AT&T (NYSE:T) and Sprint (NYSE:S), which are both Ericsson customers and have committed to intensive small cell deployments.

4. Report: Apple, Samsung holding negotiations to settle patent disputes

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Samsung Electronics have held talks in recent months to try to resolve their disputes over patent infringement claims, and although no settlement appears to be at hand, the two companies are still in negotiations over a potential deal, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

The report, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter as well as information gleaned from a  June ruling by the U.S. International Trade Commission, said representatives of the companies met in December and February to try to hash out an agreement. The talks appear to have broken down sometime in March, but are still ongoing to some extent.

Apple and Samsung representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

According to the report, in the negotiations Samsung is looking for a broad patent cross-licensing deal that could settle all outstanding litigation between it and Apple, but it is unclear whether Apple is interested in that kind of a settlement. Apple and smartphone vendor HTC agreed in November 2012 to settle all outstanding patent litigation between themselves around the world, and the two firms entered into a 10-year licensing agreement.

However, the stakes between Apple and Samsung are much higher. Not only is Samsung is the world's largest smartphone maker by volume, the company also supplies chipsets for Apple's iPhone and iPad products.

Patent-infringement claims between Apple and Samsung stretch across 10 countries. Apple won a $1.05 billion blockbuster patent infringement case against Samsung last summer in the United States, but the judge later slashed the damages in the case by $450.5 million and ordered a new trial. However, Apple could potentially wind up receiving more in damages in a new patent-infringement trial than the $1.05 billion it was originally awarded.

5. AT&T offers cheaper Mobile Share shared data plan options

AT&T Mobility (NYSE:T) is offering less expensive options in its Mobile Share shared data plans in an effort to boost adoption of the plans.

The carrier said that as of July 26 it will offer new and existing customers two new Mobile Share plan options, one with 300 MB of data and one with 2 GB of data, both with unlimited voice and texting. The 300 MB plan will cost $20 per month (plus additional costs per device, which includes $50 per smartphone) and the 2 GB plan will cost $50 per month (plus additional costs per device, which includes $45 per smartphone).

The 300 MB plan sits at the low end of the price spectrum for AT&T's shared plans, and the 2 GB plan fits between the previously offered 1 GB option ($40 per month plus per device costs) and the 4 GB plan ($70 per month plus per device costs). AT&T said that customers on the 300 MB plan can buy an additional 300 MB for $20 and customers on all other individual shared data plans can buy an additional 1 GB for $15.

AT&T's more granular options are designed to give customers more choices, and, the carrier hopes, drive more adoption of the plans. AT&T said that it had 3.3 million Mobile Share shared data accounts at the end of the first quarter, which the operator said covered about 10 million devices.

Rival Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) revealed last week that 36 percent of its postpaid subscriber base is now on its Share Everything shared data plans. Verizon's lower-end shared plans are slightly more expensive than AT&T's comparable offerings: Verizon's minimum shared data plan starts at 1 GB, for which it charges $50 per month, plus a per device cost, with smartphones at $40 per month (for a total that is $5 more expensive than the comparable AT&T offering). Verizon has a 2 GB plan for $60 per month with the $40 per month charge per smartphone ($10 more expensive than AT&T).

At the 4 GB/$70 per month level, the offerings from AT&T and Verizon even out. Both plans let individual customers add up to 10 devices to share data.

All four Tier 1 carriers offer some form of shared data plans for business customers, though Sprint (NYSE:S) and T-Mobile US (NYSE:TMUS) still offer unlimited smartphone data plans to consumers.

SPOTLIGHT ON... Researcher says up to 750M phones may be vulnerable to SIM card security flaw

A German security researcher has discovered what he says is a large security flaw in mobile SIM cards, which could be leaving as many as 750 million phones worldwide vulnerable to attack. Karsten Nohl, founder of Security Research Labs in Berlin, told the New York Times that hackers could gain access to a SIM card's 56-digit digital key, which would let them send a virus through a text message that could allow a hacker to eavesdrop on a caller and make purchases through mobile payment systems. The flaw is derived from an old encryption method developed in the 1970s called data encryption standard, or D.E.S., and although most carriers have moved to a stronger encryption method, called Triple D.E.S., many SIM cards still use the older standard. Nohl tested around 1,000 SIM cards on mobile phones running on mobile networks in Europe and North America over a two-year period. The flaw was exposed to the GSMA. "We have been able to consider the implications and provide guidance to those network operators and SIM vendors that may be impacted," GSMA spokeswoman Claire Cranton told Reuters. The United Nations' International Telecommunications Union has also reviewed the research. Article

Kovacs: Designing a spectrum-auction for maximum proceeds

Anna-Maria Kovacs

Anna-Maria Kovacs

The FCC is preparing the most complex spectrum auction it has ever run, the upcoming 600 MHz auction. It will simultaneously run a reverse auction to buy back spectrum from broadcasters and a forward auction to sell that spectrum to wireless carriers.

The FCC is attempting to meet several goals. It must make as much spectrum as possible available for wireless broadband, to meet the explosive demand consumers and businesses are placing on the carriers. It must also maximize auction proceeds to pay for the spectrum it reclaims, as well as to pay for the construction of a nationwide broadband interoperable public-safety network, and for deficit reduction.

In other words, it must both maximize the amount of spectrum that is reclaimed and maximize auction proceeds. Those two goals are, of course, complementary. Higher auction proceeds will allow the FCC to offer more funds to broadcasters, thus enticing more of them to sell back spectrum, which will make more spectrum available for broadband. With more spectrum available for resale, auction proceeds will increase.

There have been suggestions that the FCC should complicate this auction even more, by bringing into the auction a process that it has traditionally treated separately. In past auctions, the FCC has allowed all willing and qualified bidders to participate. After the close of the auction, it has examined the results against its spectrum screen, case by case. In markets where it has found excess spectrum aggregation after the auction, it has required divestitures.

Thus, the FCC has treated the auction itself separately from its spectrum-aggregation policy. There have been suggestions that it intertwine these two processes. Under this new regime, the FCC would establish spectrum caps and exclude carriers who might exceed those caps from the 600 MHz auction right up-front.

This idea has resulted in a vociferous debate, with some economists claiming that auction proceeds will be maximized if all willing bidders participate and others arguing that excluding some bidders will maximize proceeds. If the debate has accomplished nothing else, it has made it clear that the only way to know the full market value of the spectrum is to let all willing bidders enter the fray.

Indeed, in response to the concern that exclusion of selected bidders might reduce auction proceeds, a recent proposal by an advocate of exclusionary auctions has suggested that the excluded carriers become pinch-hitters, to be brought in off the bench if the auction fails to raise the FCC's revenue target. They would be allowed to bid on one license at a time, until the FCC's revenue target is reached. With such a back-up plan, what could go wrong?...Continued
