Buckingham Palace tweets news of prince's birth
The U.K.'s royal family tweeted regular updates about the birth Monday of Kate Middleton's baby, who is third in line to the throne. Buckingham Palace's socially savvy strategy whipped Facebook and Twitter into a frenzy, but may also have helped lessen the need for invasive, paparazzi-style media coverage of the birth. "If the updates are disseminated via Twitter like so many bread crumbs for the hungry media, then perhaps the paparazzi's zeal to break the news of every pregnancy-related development becomes less menacing," Cotton Delo writes. Social network aims to help users celebrate the little things
A social network called Happier wants to give its users a place to celebrate the small things that make them happy, but that might be too trivial to share on Facebook or Twitter. You might still post on Facebook if you have "the best latte in your life," CEO Nataly Kogan says, but you'd turn to Happier if you simply want to share that you "took five minutes to have a cup of coffee." Developing-world Facebook users flock to mobile access
At least 100 million people around the world use Facebook on feature phones rather than smartphones, the social network has announced. That speaks to the site's increasing importance in developing markets, where regular cellphones are widely used. "Millions of people in developing markets like India, Indonesia, and the Philippines are relying on this technology to connect with Facebook, without having to purchase a smartphone," Facebook said in its announcement. Lonely Planet fans take Twitter trip down memory lane
Lonely Planet is laying off a third of its editorial staff, prompting concerns that the brand could fold altogether -- and sending some backpackers rushing to Twitter to share their recollections of the company's travel guides. Users adopted the hashtag #lpmemories for posts about the travel handbooks, which have struggled to remain relevant in the era of the mobile Internet and social media advice forums. Time.com (7/23)

Study shows how social media preps the sales funnel
Social media can help companies to nudge consumers toward a purchase, according to a study by Vision Critical. Researchers found that social media drove real-world sales at about the same rate as online sales, suggesting that some brands could be underestimating the impact of their social programs. "If you are estimating the ROI on social by looking at social to Web, you are missing roughly half your social-inspired purchasing," says Vision Critical's Alexandra Samuel. Forbes (7/22)

Quantcast White Paper: Display Ad Clickers Are Not Your Customers
Relying on clicks to drive conversions for display advertising is often a dead end. We've found that consumers most likely to click on display ads are often vastly different from an advertiser's best-performing customers. Read this white paper to learn why optimizing display campaigns for clicks often means anti-optimizing for sales and how to focus on what really matters for ad effectiveness. Download it now!

Analysis: Social parodies work best when their creators remain hidden
Parody Twitter accounts are far more effective when they're written anonymously, experts say. Accounts that reveal their authors -- such as the @BPGlobalPR parody account, or the @RuthBourdain account -- lose their sting when they have a specific, human face behind them, says Dan Sinker, creator of the @MayorEmanuel account. "You're able to suspend your disbelief and enter into the logic of the world of that parody account easier when you don't automatically assign an additional author or face to it," Sinker says. Why gamification is more than just a gimmick
Incorporating gamelike elements such as competition into your marketing efforts might seem like a gimmick, but used correctly it can become a powerful tool for driving engagement via social channels, Ekaterina Walter writes. Gamelike elements can fuel word-of-mouth and enhance your fans' sense of community. "[I]f you know you have customers who are real fans of your product and service, gamification could be the key to sharing their delight with your brand to their networks," Walter writes. No, the royal baby won't be named "Simba"
Twitter and Facebook were in an uproar after the U.K.'s royal family announced the birth of a new crown prince, with many users posting images of Prince William and other royals pasted into scenes from "The Lion King." Others focused on the "official easel" used to ceremonially post news of the birth outside Buckingham Palace. "Still posting on Twitter? Losers! Anyone who's anyone has moved on to Easel," tweeted David Schneider. The Daily Beast (7/22)
