| | | Two Big Name Stocks Under $5
When we think of low-priced stocks - such as those trading below $5.00 per share - many of us are conditioned to refer to these securities as penny stocks. They may offer a great deal of upside but are fraught with risk due to an immature early-stage business model.
It is rare that anyone automatically thinks of some of the biggest and most important brands in the U.S and abroad. Yet today a handful of big-name stocks do in fact trade at very low prices, which is indicative of troubles inherent in their businesses. But they may offer gains as a tradable security or even as an M&A candidate.
Arguably, the most well known of these stocks is Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK - $4.17). Most know the Finnish company as a designer, developer and marketer of mobile handsets and devices. Perhaps lesser known is that Nokia provides mobile broadband and other network infrastructure and services through a joint venture company with Siemens called Nokia Siemens Networks, which it recently announced it is acquiring. Amazingly, Nokia traces its roots to 1865 and employs nearly 100,000 people.

Stocks in These Industries Are Under Accumulation
Since the return from the long July 4th weekend, we've noticed an interesting trend brewing in the stock market. We noted that in May and June tech stocks tend to drift and become out of favor while other sectors move to the forefront. While a little later than we expected, but still on cue, the casual dining space, which counts the summertime as a key driver of revenue and profitability, is under broad accumulation.
This phenomenon started two weeks ago and has culminated in several stocks reaching new highs. Of course, the list consists of the usual cast of characters such as Cracker Barrel (NASDAQ: CBRL) and The Cheesecake Factory (NASDAQ: CAKE). However, there are no microcap stocks in sight. If you like this industry and don't mind paying up (in terms of share price, not valuation), these stocks appear to have room to move higher.
Other industries under accumulation include mining and energy. In our view, there is some bottom-fishing occurring given the huge sell-off in gold in Q2. While some values may still be had in mining, we're cautious and would certainly not be aggressive as the space could be subject to big swings for a few more weeks. We prefer energy to mining, especially select junior oil and gas exploration and production firms.
