CISOs behind the curve on BYOD

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

According to a new survey by IBM, chief information security officers continue to struggle with BYOD.

Only 39 percent of CISOs are planning to develop an enterprise strategy for BYOD and only 29 percent have done so. Even more discouraging, only 10 percent consider a BYOD strategy to be important, according to the survey (.pdf).

Yet, according to a recent Cisco survey, 78 percent of U.S. workers use a personal mobile device for work purposes. So, the mobile devices are flooding into the enterprise, whether a BYOD strategy is in place or not.

While more than three-quarters of CISOs have inventoried their mobile devices on the corporate network and deployed mobile device management capabilities, only 61 percent have published a set of principles for mobile security and only 56 percent have developed containerization and encryption strategies for apps and sensitive data, the IBM survey found.

As the report notes, "mobile security is at a foundational stage of development...The primary mobile challenge for security leaders is to advance beyond the initial steps and think less about technology and more about policy and strategy."

For the study, IBM conducted in-depth interviews with 41 senior IT security leaders in large enterprises. A full 80 percent were the same leaders who participated in the inaugural study last year.

Most of the CISOs surveyed still consider traditional security technologies, such as identity and access management and network intrusion prevention and vulnerability scanning, as the most vital security components for their enterprise.

Nearly two-thirds do not translate metrics into financial impact, which makes it difficult to convince the C-suite to invest in security. At the same time, 80 percent of CISO are aware of the security concerns of their CEO and 70 percent develop their security strategy in conjunction with other business strategies.

The conclusion from the IBM study is clear. CISOs are behind the curve when it comes to BYOD policies. This opens up their enterprises to security risks that could be lessened with proper BYOD strategies and technologies in place. It is time for CISOs to stand up and face the future. - Fred

1. Options, MobileIron join forces on MDM for financial services industry

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Options, which provides infrastructure products targeting the global financial services sector, is teaming with mobile management and security firm MobileIron to offer clients a complete mobile device management solution.

Options will deploy MobileIron's multi-OS MDM platform as part of its PIPE Core services business technology infrastructure service. Offered as part of the company's Private Financial Cloud platform, PIPE Core offers financial services firms a full suite of technology services including domain control, email, file serving, print serving, web access and VoIP telephony. All data and communications services are delivered with compliance safeguards at or above levels required for investment bank infrastructure.

The MobileIron partnership enables Options to support a mix of corporate and BYOD devices, offering IT managers a comprehensive security and management platform while preserving a user's typical mobile device experience.

"People now wish to utilize the same technology they're using at home within the workplace and MobileIron allows for just that," said Options CTO John Bryant. "It's a win-win for both the employee and the employer. The firm has the peace of mind that the mobile devices being used to access the company's data and systems are secure, regulated and compliant, while the employee can opt to use an existing device they are comfortable and familiar with."

Cloud-based mobile device management revenue worldwide is expected to increase at a 27.3 percent compound annual growth rate, climbing from $574.8 million this year to $1.5 billion in 2018, according to a recent Analysys Mason forecast. Much of that growth will be driven by small and medium-sized enterprises looking for MDM options that don't require large upfront costs, the researcher added.

2. SAP Mobile Secure portfolio expands cloud capabilities

By Jason Ankeny Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

SAP is updating its Mobile Secure enterprise mobility management portfolio, integrating partner Mocana's Mobile App Protection solution as well as enhancing mobile browser and mobile content management capabilities.

SAP Mobile Secure, introduced this spring, enables businesses to safeguard iOS and Android devices against loss and theft. With the addition of the Mobile App Protection service, SAP can offer customers a complete solution for mobile content security in the cloud, protecting applications developed in-house or by SAP and third parties. The solution complements SAP's existing Afaria mobile device security offering, which offers IT managers insight into real-time device usage and status alongside remote lock and wipe capabilities.

SAP's secure browser extends app level security to intranet data, web apps and portals. Businesses may now bolster almost any web app with advanced policies including FIPS 140-2 data-at-rest encryption, per-app VPN capability, copy/paste protection and app-level data wipe. In addition, administrators can configure browser security across any device, even those not under active management.

SAP Mobile Secure also secures access to content via the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud service's Mobile Documents solution, which provides an entry point to personal documents and corporate content from a single account. The latest release of SAP Mobile Documents adds support for iPhone and Android, a new user interface, custom branding for iPad, improved connectivity to corporate content management systems and security policies based on document classification.

"With SAP Mobile Secure solutions in the cloud, IT not only deploys and helps protect mobile devices, sensitive content and both native and web-based mobile apps, they can be a strategic driver for business," said Anthony Reynolds, SAP's senior vice president of Worldwide Mobile Sales and Solutions. "The fact that the entire SAP Mobile Secure portfolio is now available in the cloud affords companies the flexibility to secure mobile devices, apps and content seamlessly and affordably. The business can then focus on executing on its mobile strategy and building a portfolio of mobile applications to drive business results."

SAP recently updated Afaria to offer full support for iOS 7, complete with managed app configuration, single sign on and per-app VPN. Afaria also supports Samsung Knox for Android.

3. Mobile ad spending to triple by 2018, says Juniper

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Spending on mobile advertising is expected to reach $39 billion in 2018, up from $13 billion this year, according to the latest forecast from Juniper Research.

The growth will be fueled by increased use of analytics platforms coupled with the launch of innovative advertising formats and purchasing mechanisms, judges Juniper.

Juniper's mobile ad spending figure for this year is lower than a recent estimate by eMarketer of $15.8 billion, or 2.6 percent of total ad spending and 11.9 percent of digital ad spending.

There will be increasing opportunities for targeted in-app advertising, according to Juniper.

For example, Facebook has been able to monetize its native apps, so that mobile contributes 41 percent of its overall advertising revenue. The social networking site plans to rollout video ads, highlighting the industry shift toward interactive rich media ads and away from mobile banner advertising.

As FierceMobileIT reported earlier this month, Facebook overhauled its mobile app install ads program, with a series of new features to enable businesses to increase engagement and conversions within their apps. The new features are designed to reach users who downloaded a given app and direct them back to specific content and products within the software framework.

In addition, the industry is seeing the growth of real-time bidding, which enables advertisers to buy impressions in real time. This means that publishers will be able to more easily sell their advertising inventory, which will boost overall mobile ad spend, Juniper related.

Some brands are still reluctant to spend money on mobile advertising--viewing it as inappropriate or intrusive. However, "we are witnessing a change in consumer perceptions of mobile advertising as advertisers begin to use opt-in, or reward-style advertising; by harnessing big data and location information, mobile ads are being better targeted to users," commented Sian Rowlands, Juniper analyst and author of the report.

TODAY'S SPOTLIGHT... News Bytes: Enterprise use inspires iPad Air; 10M BBM downloads on first day; more

>> Apple's iPad Air designed for the enterprise

With lots of power and a light, thin hardware, the new iPad Air appears to be designed with business use in mind, writes technology journalist Ryan Faas. In a CITEworld article, Faas explains how the video introducing the iPad Air highlighted the use of the iPad as a professional tool. "One of Tim Cook's most interesting comments was that Apple couldn't have imagined all the ways its customers have used the iPad. One gets the impression that even Apple didn't realize how popular the iPad would be in professional and business settings," Faas opines. Read more of Faas' iPad observations.

>> Propelics develops enterprise mobile apps for Payless, Merck, Hallmark and others

San Jose, Calif.-based Propelics is developing enterprise mobile apps for an impressive list of customers, including Payless Shoesource, Merck, Family Dollar, Wells Fargo and Hallmark, reports Heather Clancy in a recent ZDNet article. The firm sends its personnel to the company to find out how it can develop enterprise mobile apps to meet its specific needs. For example, it sent a team to one client to ride along with its delivery riders. The team discovered that replacement riders took an extra four hours to make deliveries because they didn't know the route as well and didn't have access to shortcuts. So Propelics developed a mobile app with route tips that saved the company $6 million to $7 million in overtime, related Eric Carlson, one of the company's partners. Read more on Propelics.

>> BlackBerry sees 10 million BBM downloads on first day

BlackBerry proclaimed that its new BBM messaging app, which opens up the platform to Android and Apple users, was downloaded 10 million times in the first day of its availability, writes Andrew Bocking, executive vice president for BBM, in a blog. As reported by FierceMobileIT, BlackBerry began rolling out the BBM Messenger app for iOS and Android on Monday after suspending the launch in September because a leaked version surfaced and wreaked havoc with its release schedule. Apparently, the delay has not dampened enthusiasm for the messaging app. "The BBM app for iPhone has been optimized for iOS7. We also added a new BBM chat widget in the BBM app for Android. This new feature lets you stay engaged in chats without even having to open the app. It's a great new feature," Bocking explains. Read more on the BBM Messenger release.

>> Close to half of US adults own either a tablet or e-reader, says Pew poll

More than one-third of American adults own tablets and more than a quarter own e-readers, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center. Combined, the percentage of U.S. adults owning a tablet or e-reader is 43 percent. More than half of householders earning $75,000 or more now have tablets--up from 25 percent last year--and 38 percent of this income group have e-readers, up from 19 percent last year. For the survey, Pew polled 6,224 U.S. adults ages 16 and older. Read more about the Pew tablet/e-reader survey.

>> Infonetics: M2M revenue to top $31 billion by 2017

Machine-to-machine communications revenue is forecast by Infonetics to reach $31 billion in 2017, up from $15 billion last year. Total M2M connections are expected to exceed four billion by 2017, up from 1.4 billion last year. "Cellular networks represent the most meaningful revenue opportunity for operators, but by far the most popular way to connect to M2M services is via PAN (personal area network) wireless technologies, such as WiFi, Zigbee, Bluetooth, and IP500, which do not generate connection revenue. It's critical that mobile operators incorporate a broader view of the various M2M access technologies into their M2M strategies," observes Godfrey Chua, head of Infonetics' M2M and Connected World program.
