An Interpretive Dance For Her Boss

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 04:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Marina Shifrin quit her job producing viral videos at at Next Media Animation (the folks who make those crazy Taiwanese news animations), by posting a viral video of herself dancing along with a text explanation.

We hope she already has another job lined up, at a company that doesn't care about page views. We can admire her chutzpah and dedication to her journalism ideals, but we all know that it's hard to get someone to hire you after you've publicly criticized your previous boss. I've seen it happen too many time, and although that taboo tends to insulate bad managers from accountability, that's the way it is.

The music is "Gone" by Kanye West and contains NSFW lyrics.

JoeJoe Just Loves Batman

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 03:00 AM PDT

We've seen plenty of pet capybaras on the internet by now (most famously Captain ROUS), but none of them have yet been nearly as geeky as the delightfully precious JoeJoe. He not only has posed in this cute little Batman story, he also has been known to dress in a great Batman costume of his own and pose alongside AT-AT's.

It just goes to show that even if you're among the the largest rodents on earth, you can still hope to grow up to be a giant crime-fighting bat.

Man Named Fudge Charged with Stealing Ice Cream, Cakes

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 01:00 AM PDT

Conor P. Fudge took the concept of nominative determinism a little too seriously. The 25-year-old was caught on video surveillance cameras taking ice cream, cakes, and cash from a Cold Stone Creamery outlet in Iowa City, Iowa.

The owner of the business told officers that Fudge used an unauthorized key to enter the business, according to a police complaint.

Fudge hadn’t worked at the ice cream shop since Aug. 27, according to police.

That's only been a month, Apparently it wasn't long enough to forget how good the ice cream is. Fudge has been charged with third-degree burglary. -via Time Newsfeed

The Insect That is the Cross Between an Alien Xenomorph and the Sarlacc

Posted: 01 Oct 2013 12:00 AM PDT

Photo: J. Gallego/Macroinstantes - via Why Evolution is True

Spanish photographer J. Gallego of the Microinstantes blog captured the eye-popping pictures above of the larva of a species of lacewing or thread-winged antlion (of the tribe Crocinae) with an extremely elongated prothorax and fearsome jaws.

Now, this probably reminded you of the iconic scene in Alien 3 where Ripley came face to face with the Alien xenomorph.

Image: Twentieth Century Fox

Not only that, the insect is also like the Sarlacc, which inhabits the Great Pit of Carkoon, from the movie Star Wars.

Image: Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi

Why Sarlacc, you ask? Here's why. An antlion larva digs sand pit trap and buries itself in the center of the pit with its jaws just below the surface, waiting for an unsuspecting ant to wander in.

An ant that steps into the loose sand of the pit would slip to the bottom, right to the waiting jaws of the antlion. A quick snap of the long mandibles not only captures the ant, but also injects into it a cocktail of digestive enzmes to liquify the content of the victim's body.

Escaping the trap isn't easy - if an ant tries to climb up the wall of the pit, the antlion would start throwing sand and pebbles at the insect to make it fall back (the sandy wall of the pit is also prone to collapse, thus sending the victim back to the maws of the waiting antlion).

(Entomologist Gil Wizen has a fascinating photo of the Crocinae larvae emerging from its sandy death trap)

Here's a video clip of how an Antlion pit works from the Discovery channel's Monster Bug Wars:

One Year of Breast Cancer Treatment

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 11:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Emily Helck was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and started a blog, The Real Tumors of New Jersey, to chronicle her story. She also took pictures every week, which she combined into one video to show how her appearance changed over that time.

I'm still not completely sure why I took these photos. At first it had to do with documenting the hair saga. But it wound up becoming about something else, too. The photos became hash marks scratched on the wall, marking time spent inhabiting the world of this disease. Every time I set up the tripod was another week down. Or was it another week lost?

Becoming aware of what one patient goes through, even just a little bit, seems an appropriate way to enter Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. -via Buzzfeed

Wonder Woman: A Short Film

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 09:00 PM PDT

(YouTube link)

Here we see Wonder Woman (played by Rileah Vanderbilt) being generally tough as nails, in both the modern world and in the mythological pantheon from which she originated. The idea of a Wonder Woman feature film has been talked about for years, with studios considering it, and deciding that it's too difficult, or won't draw enough fans. This short film by Rainfall Films gives the Amazonian the treatment the character deserves. It seems like a teaser for something more to come. Or is that just wishful thinking on my part? Connecticut's Brain and Tumor Collection

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 08:00 PM PDT

The Cushing Center is in the basement of the medical school at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Named after neurosurgeon Harvey Williams Cushing, the center is also known as the brain museum. Cushing began collecting and preserving brains and tumors in 1902, and kept them in his office. The huge collection was eventually sent to the basement, but in 1990, the school decided to display the brains to the public. Read more about the brains in the basement at mental_floss

Fox Repeatedly Steals Balls at Golf Course

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 07:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

I know only two things about golf: (1) checking is not allowed and (2) I am no longer permitted at my local golf course.

Now I can add a third item to that list: at least one golf course is plagued by a fox. A course in Verbier, Switzerland has a resident fox with a craving for golf balls. He's stolen hundreds of them. Is he reselling them?

If golf is, as Mark Twain put it, "a good walk spoiled," then I can only applaud the creation of a novel obstacle necessitating ingenuity from golfers. Require golfers to retrieve their balls from the fox or take three stroke penalties.

Ray Villafane's Living Squashes

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT

It's pumpkin season again! That means that master pumpkin artist Ray Villafane, whose work we've featuredextensively hereat Neatorama, faces a busy month.

A week ago, Mr. Villafane attended a pumpkin festival in Ludwigsburg, Germany. He did a lot of work with the Hubbard squash. As usual, he carved vividly expressive faces into them, such as the one above. You can view more photos of the series here or at Mr. Villafane's website here.

Jagwagon

Fire up the Jagwagon, Alfred. We're going to to the shop! Apparently, that's what you get when a Volkswagen and a Jaguar fall in love and have a baby.

The People of Walmart featured this pink awesomeness-on-wheels parked at an Arkansas Walmart earlier this month. A commenter on that site said, "I'm from Arkansas and have seen this car…at a gas station in Benton…and the girl who drives it also has a pet monkey who wears diapers….wish i could find the pics I took of them all together posing with the car…"

We'll keep you up to date if pics of the driver and her pet monkey appears on the Web.

The World’s Grimmest Cupcakes

The cupcake you see here will be sold at the Eat Your Heart Out 2013 pop-up cake shop in London, England, open October 25-27. Food artists will be offering the world's most gruesome and delicious treats. These cupcakes are made by Twisted Fondant, a macabre division of Fantasy Fondant. What makes them so gruesome? The explanation may be a bit disturbing, visually, so if you are up for it, continue reading.

The name of these cupcakes is Mango Fly Larvae Removal cupcakes. Miss Cakehead calls them DIY Maggot Extraction cupcakes. They are served with a glove and a pair of tweezers so you can do the deed. Just keep reminding yourself that no matter what it looks like, this is all delicious cake and edible icing.

Gently pull that maggot out. Gently! You don't want it to tear apart!

It's almost out.

What a relief! The maggot is edible. Really.

Don't forget to squeeze out the pus. It's mango-flavored!

The Eat Your Heart Out 2013 cake shop food exhibition and sale will be October 25-27th. Macabre Liqueur Chocolates will also be offered at the event. Read more at Miss Cakehead's site.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Barbie

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Watch out, Ken! Barbie will always get her man, now that she's in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Wait, now, that didn't sound right. Well, she will always bring in wanted men.

Almost there: Barbie will always successfully arrest people accused of crimes. The RCMP's official shop sells Barbie dolls wearing the dress uniform of Canada's famed wilderness marshals. The Globe and Mail reports:

Bianca McGregor, who heads up marketing for the RCMP Heritage Centre in Regina, told the Leader-Post that, initially, the gift shop took the dolls to see how they’d sell, and it turned out well.

“You’ve got two really strong brands,” she told the newspaper. “With Barbie you’ve got a brand that for some people it’s not a toy, it’s an investment. And then you’ve got one of the strongest brands this country has to offer.”

By the way, Cookie Monster (plush) Mountie costs $10 more.

It costs more to feed Cookie Monster while he remains unsold.

The Strange Sarcophagi of the Chachapoya

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 02:00 PM PDT

The Chachapoya people were a tribe that flourished until they were conquered and assimilated into the Inca culture around 1470 CE. Oner type of artifact they left behind was their purunmachus, or sarcophagi. These were built high on cliff faces so they wouldn't be looted.

A trove of these purunmachus were discovered in 1928 when an earthquake brought one down into the Utcubamba valley. More have been found since then, in several styles. It is believed that a deceased body would be placed on a cliff ledge and then the purunmachu was built around it.

There are plenty more pictures of the purunmachus at Kuriositas, but beware, there are also pictures of the centuries-old human remains found inside.  -via the Presurfer

The Case for Handwritten Letters

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Vinni)

On Saturday, I wrote about Cristina Vanko's project to send text messages via handwritten notes composed with a calligraphy pen. She observed that some of her friends felt touched by the process, as though Vanko's notes made them feel special to her:

11) It was indicated multiple times that people feel more "special" when they received handwritten messages.

I understand that. In my early twenties, I used to send out written letters instead of email to friends. They were typed, rather than handwritten. Almost always I received verbal or emailed rather than written responses. But one friend mentioned once that every letter was like getting a wrapped present. My practice wasn't reciprocated, but it was appreciated.

In Verily Mag, Julia Hogan writes that we all should occasionally write and send letters by hand:

But now that communication is exponentially faster—thanks in great part to email and smartphones—the handwritten note isn’t just rarer, it has taken on a new kind of meaning. Receiving a handwritten note is that much more significant today precisely because the writer chose to take the time to pen a note, rather than an abbreviated message. [...]

You don’t have to be Shakespeare. No need to compose poetry or write pages upon pages. Just say what’s on your heart. Tell your reader how much you value their friendship, or simply thank them for a gift you’ve received.

Dress up your note. Stationery can make any note seem extra special. You can easily find unique stationery to fit your budget no matter how large or small. Check out handcrafted cards on Etsy. Paper Source, Papyrus, and Target also have a good selection.

Be creative. If you’re feeling crafty, make your own stationery! Take a trip to your local craft store and pick up a package of blank cards and envelopes, a rubber stamp, and colored ink.

And remember, you don’t need the finest stationery, the most eloquent language, or even a special occasion to send a note! A simple, “thinking of you” is enough to make someone’s week.

Nick Bertke AKA Pogo Tells Us His Secret

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT

We've been a huge fan of Nick Bertke AKA Pogo here on Neatorama since we featured his remix of Alice in Wonderland way back in 2008. Since then, he's released remixes and samplings of Mary Poppins, Snow White, Scooby-Doo, The Wizard of Oz, Monsters Inc., The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, A.I., and many more (most of them featured here on Neatorama).

Last summer, Bertke released his first "about Pogo" video clip, in which he explained how he did what he does so well. In that clip, Pogo explained what he looked for when he selected audio clips to mix. Watch the wizard at work:

YouTube Clip - via Gizmodo

In the past couple of weeks, Pogo released a few new clips that you can enjoy below:

This one is fantastic and is becoming one of my all-time favorites Pogo mix, the Muppet Mash.

Think that Pogo can mix only music from cartoons, TV series and movies? Think again: he can make anything musically enjoyable, including home appliances. Here's what all home appliance commercials should be like!

You've got to listen to them all ... especially this Pokemon mix Catchatronic:

And a classic, Disney's Snow White remix Wishery - first mixed by Pogo back in 2010, is performed live (re-watch it just to see him dance!)

Should I Buy a Mac or a PC?

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 10:00 AM PDT

"What kind of computer should I buy?" As cartoonist Scott Meyer advises, be gracious and help those with less computer knowledge through a prudent purchase.

Unless, of course, you're a computer salesman. Then you should argue for the most expensive computer in your inventory.

The Spoil of Mariners

An article on scurvy opens up with the story of the Norwegian whaling station named Smeerenburg, which was abandoned every winter during the off season. When someone got the great idea to leave seven men there all winter to guard equipment, they all died by the end of February.

Scurvy is a particularly horrible way to die, as lack of vitamin C prevents the body from producing sufficient collagen. The symptoms include pain, bleeding, and the inability to move correctly as the body falls apart at the seams. Couple these awful symptoms with the fact that no one knew why it happened, and many societies did not know how to cure it, until James Lind experimented with folk remedies in 1747, including citrus fruits. Even that did not help much, as it took decades for authorities to implement Lind's recommendations.

How to Turn an Umbrella into Batman's Hang Glider

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Instructables member bigape calls it a "delta kite," but I think that most us probably immediately thought of Batman's cape gliding.

You'll need a few extra parts, including a bicycle wheel, aluminum pipes and plastic tubing. But with practice, you'll be able to whip out emergency air transport from a prepared umbrella. On a bad date? Performance review with the boss going poorly? Get out like Batman.

I Stole A Time Lord

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 08:30 AM PDT

For years we thought that The Doctor originally stole a TARDIS, but it was only during Matt Smith's Era during "The Doctor's Wife" that we found out that the TARDIS, aka "Sexy," actually ran away with a young Time Lord of her choosing. That story line is reflected through Tumblr user JigglyKat's adorable painting titled "I Stole A Time Lord." The work was created for a Galifrey art show back in 2012 and now I wish I got to see that show for myself.

Caution: Flying Cheerleaders

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

You are about to watch young men and women perform stunts that were once only seen in circuses. This is a music video from CheerSounds, a company that produces custom music for cheerleading squads, with video recorded at StuntFest 2013. The song is called "Decitona."

Oh, these gymnasts are impressive, but also frightening from a parent's perspective. A recent study in the Journal of Pediatrics confirmed a trend that cheerleading is the most dangerous sport for female Americans. So I feel I must say, "Don't try this at home." You have to wonder about the stunts that didn't make the cut. -via Daily Picks and Flicks

Saint Walter

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 07:30 AM PDT

He's no saint, but perhaps Walter White can find redemption.

Jason Heuser created this hagiographic image of the lead character from Breaking Bad. You may remember his previous depictions of US Presidents performing heroic deeds, such as John Kennedy riding a unicorn on the moon, Abraham Lincoln riding a bear while releasing the Emancipation Proclamation and Teddy Roosevelt shooting Bigfoot.

Shouldn't Saint Walter be pants-less?

Marching Band Proposal

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Jonathan proposed to Danielle in the most spectacular way he could imagine -by arranging for the University of Michigan Marching Band to spell out the proposal! They did it right after the Michigan vs. Illinois game in October of 2012. That was a spectacle, but when Jonathan asked Scott to edit the video, Scott went berserk, making it into a hilariously "epic" proposal video, complete with atomic bombs and the proper soundtrack. It's enough to bring a tear to your eye. Stay for the credits and the noisy cameraman at the end. -via Viral Viral Videos

The Perfect Halloween Costume for a Little Chihuahua

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 06:30 AM PDT

Say hello to my new little friend! This little guy is all ready for Halloween in his tiny pinata costume complete with a decorative sombrero. While it looks like something that you would have to buy from the store, Studio DIY has the directions on how to make it yourself and it sounds relatively easy -just glue strips of crepe paper glued to a dog sweater. Of course, you probably will have to buy your own dog sombrero.

How to Argue With People Who Say Pandas Should Die

Posted: 30 Sep 2013 06:00 AM PDT

Pretty much everyone agrees that pandas are adorable, but there are those who claim that the money we've been spending on panda conservation would be better spent on other species and that we should just let pandas die off and worry about other creatures instead. in 2009, David Plotz of Slate wrote: "Pandas are not ill-natured. They are worse: They are no-natured. Drearier animals you cannot imagine. They are highly anti-social, detesting interaction with other pandas and people."

For those who disagree with this concept, Popular Science writer Dan Nosowitz has many strong argurments to argue with those who say pandas don't deserve to live. While you should certainly read the whole thing, the bottom line is that pandas have evolved just fine to survive in their environment. The reason they're having problems now is only because we have interfered with their ecosystem to the point that they can't survive in it properly -that means we owe it to them to help stop their extinction and to right the wrongs of our own species.
