US Youth Soccer launches new online clinic focused on Principles of Play

“Constructive Soccer – Principles of Play” online clinic launches on education.usyouthsoccer.org

FRISCO, Texas (November 5, 2013) – US Youth Soccer has released “Constructive Soccer – Principles of Play” a new online clinic focused on coaches with experience identifying patterns of play in real-time game and training situations.  The clinic is offered at no cost on Education.USYouthSoccer.org.

Principles are broken down to help with the progression of each age group. The training and game footage also follows the modified US Youth Soccer rules for each age group.

“This online clinic provides a next step for coaches who want to improve their ability to recognize and then train the specific principles of attack and principles of defense,” said US Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Sam Snow. “We have coaches who have been in the game for a few years, that may know the terminology of the sport, but who will benefit from seeing the game through the perspective provided in this clinic.”

The US Youth Soccer Coaching Education Department, in cooperation with the Coaching and Recreational Committees, designed the clinic to help coaches who have a basic understanding of principles of play better recognize those principles within a playing environment.

“This clinic is a great addition to our resources available for the novice coach,” said Tom Turner, US Youth Soccer Coaching Committee Chairman. “We are pleased to offer another tool to empower coaches of all backgrounds and experience to understand and teach the game for all kids.”

Available for all coaches of all abilities, the clinic is aimed to give practical application to the principle terminology often learned in the National Youth License and Youth Module coaching education courses.

The principles of play explained in the clinic include:

Principles of Attack:

  • Penetration
  • Support
  • Mobility
  • Width
  • Improvisation

Principles of Defense:

  • Pressure
  • Cover
  • Balance
  • Compactness
  • Control and Restraint
