Today's Top Stories

1. SMBs' mobile presence lagging

By Molly Bernhart Walker Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Most small- to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) in the United States don't have mobile-friendly communications and services for customers. Fifty-nine percent of U.S. SMB websites aren't set up for customers to research and make purchases on their mobile devices.

Sixty percent of SMBs' websites cannot be viewed on the iPhone, 65 percent can't be viewed on the Samsung Galaxy S and 87 percent of them lack support for viewing on the fourth generation iPad, according to a new report from web services firm hibu. The company audited 1,000 U.S. SMBs' websites across 10 different industries to assess mobile usability.

Only 12 percent of the SMBs surveyed supported viewing on all three tested devices, finds hibu.

"Hotels and [bed-and-breakfasts] have the most number of mobile-friendly websites, while building construction websites have the least," write report authors.

Hotels and B&Bs had more than three times as many websites that supported viewing on the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S. Following lodging, the most mobile-friendly industries were restaurants, with 52 percent of websites mobile enabled, and taxi and limo services, with 44 percent of websites mobile friendly, finds hibu.

While mobile-friendly websites are one area of SMB focus, mobile apps are another. Bizness Apps, a mobile marketing services company, recently released its own findings and an infographic on which businesses are making apps part of their mobile strategy.

"In terms of the most popular industries creating mobile apps for their businesses, restaurants came first, with a 22 percent likelihood, followed by professional services, which includes lawyers, retailers, accountants, and doctors," writes Bizness Apps founder Andrew Gazdecki in a recent blog post on Business2Community. "Fitness clubs come third."

2. Majority of highest performing IT teams deploy enterprises app stores, says Accenture

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

More than half of the highest performing IT teams have deployed enterprise app stores, according to Accenture.

Moving forward, IT and business leaders must clarify the roles in mobile app development and transform the process to take advantage of new technologies quickly, support regular software iterations and accelerate business growth, explains Accenture in its new report, Accenture Technology Vision 2014.

"Farsighted business-users are eager to make their apps more useful and more contact-aware. Companies can no longer view software development as someone else's job. In the digital world, software must become a core competency for every company," observes Accenture's chief technology officer Paul Daugherty.

In addition, wearable devices and connected machines are changing the way businesses operate, says Accenture. These devices improve workforce capabilities and automate processes.

For example, Philips is running a pilot Google Glass app that enables physicians to monitor a patient's vital signs and react to surgical procedural developments without turning away from the patient or procedure.

"As the line between digital technology and the real world continues to blur, traditional companies are leveraging and enhancing their physical assets to create immersive user experiences that are enabling them to leapfrog online competitors," says Daugherty.

3. Ultra-portable PC shipments doubled last year, says ABI

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Ultra-portable PC shipments doubled in 2013, reaching 22.5 million units or 12 percent of the total notebook PC shipments, according to ABI Research stats.

The category of ultra-portable PCs includes laptops with screen sizes less than 14 inches and weighing less than 4 pounds, including Apple's MacBook Air, Lenovo IdeaPad, Asus Zenbook, Dell Latitude, Acer Aspire, Lenovo ThinkPad, HP Pavilion and Sony VAIO.

"The bulk of ultra-portable PCs are powered by the Windows 8 operating system, which suffered fits and starts during 2013 due to usability issues and poor first impressions by early adopter audiences. A revision, Windows 8.1, was released in the second half of the year to address these concerns, though popular opinion suggests many considering a refresh to their existing systems are willing to wait for the hiccups to be worked out before making a financial commitment," explains ABI.

In addition, tablets are becoming more popular, siphoning off potential ultra-portable purchasers, says ABI. By 2015, the research firm predicts that the Asia-Pacific region will pass North America as the largest market for ultra-portables.

Jeff Orr, senior practice director at ABI, expects LTE mobile broadband to be a differentiator for mobile network operators and fuel demand of mobile devices in addition to smartphones.

"As LTE reaches critical mass for network coverage, markets will be able to abandon 3G mode compatibility and carriers will readily shift toward LTE-only modems in data-centric computing applications," observes Orr.
