What’s Your Home State’s Signature Cocktail?

Posted: 24 Jan 2014 02:00 AM PST

Hannah Gregg constructed a map of the United States with a cocktail for each state. At Buzzfeed, you'll find a list under the map with each state's drink, it's ingredients, and a little history behind it. Kentucky is the mint julep, which I wold have guessed. It supposedly contains Bourbon, sugar and water… hey, what about MINT? I don't know about Louisville, but the rest of the state only hears about mint juleps in May. Otherwise, you'll run into moonshine a lot more often. But then, moonshine is not a cocktail. Did she select the drink recipe for your state well?

Make Life Happy With A Sad Keanu Action Figure

Posted: 24 Jan 2014 12:00 AM PST

Want to get in on the Sad Keanu fun without using the same old, boring 2D images? Looking for a fresh way to express Mr. Reeve’s Matrix-induced sadness via 3D printed figurine and diorama? You’re in luck, now that Japanese toy builder idk has created the Sad Keanu action figure.

He’s completely un-poseable, totally devoid of any action save dwelling in the mire of deep depression, and he makes the perfect complement to any existing action figure or doll collection.

Want Keanu to look all sad while riding a Little Pony, or stare his own mortality in the face while hanging around with a bunch of movie monsters? With a sad little Keanu in hand, anything is possible!

As a Joke, A Woman with Muscular Dystrophy Applied to Be a Fashion Model. She Got the Job.

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:00 PM PST

(Photo: Diesel)

Jillian Mercado is a fashion reporter. She has muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair. During her work for a fashion magazine, she met Nicola Formichetti, the artistic director for the Diesel fashion house.  A few months later, she discovered that Formichetti had put out a casting call for models. For a bit of fun, she applied.

To her surprise, Mercado was among 23 models selected to represent the brand. When photographers took photos of her, she didn’t conceal her wheelchair. Mercado was worried about how people would respond when the photos were released on Instagram. To her delight, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Mercado is overjoyed about it. She wrote on her blog:

You all have no idea how speechless I am right now . . . Thank you for giving me a chance of a lifetime and believing in me. This is beyond everything. You guys that’s me!!

This is simple. Just enter your annual income, and what country you are in, and the Davos2014 Wage Calculator from CNN will let you know how you stack up against your other countrymen and against the rest of the world. Do you make as much money as a teacher in Ethiopia? A medical doctor in Greece? Or the Queen of England? (I don't think so.) I'm sure my results are common, in that I don't make all that much compared to other Americans, but globally I'm rich! -via Digg

The Jeweler with No Fingers

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 08:00 PM PST

(YouTube link)

British goldsmith Annette Gabbedey has been crafting custom jewelry and setting precious gems for 24 years, despite the fact that she was born without fingers. The "about" page at her business site doesn't even mention the lack of fingers, but as you can see from the picture, she doesn't hide it.

Gabbedey doesn't consider herself disabled, just different. She doesn't use special tools, but has her own method of using regular jeweler's tools, like setting the piece she's working on in a vice, and keeping a strap around her wrist to set a tool into. Gabbedey says fingers would just get in her way! See more pictures here.  -via Arbroath

6-Way Conjoined Book

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 07:00 PM PST

A few months ago, we showed you a dos-à-dos book--one with a hard back that forms the front of another book. This rare book owned by the National Library of Sweden is even more complex. Erik Kwakkel, a medieval book historian at Leiden University, says that this book is actually six books that are each opened differently. Each book opens and closes with a little clasp.

All of the books are devotional texts printed in Germany in the 1550s through 1570s, including a copy of Martin Luther's widely-read The Shorter Catechism. You can view more photos here.

Game Of Thrones Scenes As Japanese Woodcut Style Prints

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 06:00 PM PST

George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones saga may have taken place in Westeros, which is more like Europe than Asia, but it's every fan art/fiction creating geek's duty to consider the possibility of their favorite storyline taking place in another locale, or an alternate dimension.

Imagining scenes from the Game of Thrones series as Japanese woodblock prints somehow makes sense, and the characters really look right wearing old timey Nihon garb. Created by Imgur user seiji, these sharp looking scenes are so popular that seiji is now planning on offering prints for sale online. Check out all the prints in the series here, complete with description of each scene.

Previously Unknown Egyptian Pharaoh Found

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 05:00 PM PST

A burial ground in Egypt that was discovered in 1902 but never excavated has yielded its first pharaoh -and may contain many more. The tomb, in the area of Abydos, 300 miles south of Cairo, is being explored by a team of archaeologists led by Josef Wegner. They pieced together a 3,600-year-old skeleton believed to King Woseribre Senebkay, a leader of a dynasty not previously known in Egyptian history. His name was pieced together from hieroglyphics inside the tomb.

"We were pretty puzzled for two days," Wegner told the Daily Pennsylvanian. "It was a king's name that didn't appear anywhere else in history, so we didn't know who he was at first."

Senebkay's discovery confirms for the first time the existence of a third dynasty of pharaohs that ruled a central area between Egypt's northern and southern kingdoms in about 1600BC.

The two latter kingdoms were reunited in the century that followed – but the presence of a third dynasty suggests that their fractious relationship and subsequent amalgamation may have been more complex than initially thought.

The tombs at Abydos are modest by the standards of other pharaoh's tombs, which is why they weren't investigated earlier. There may be other pharaohs of the same dynasty waiting to be unearthed. Read more about King Senebkay at The Guardian. -via the Presurfer

Antique Jewelry: From Hummingbird Heads to Poison Rings

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 03:00 PM PST

Antique jewelry is nice, but sometimes it can be gruesome. You never know when you'll come across a piece of jewelry at an estate sale that is made of a glass eye, a bone, or a long-dead animal. Jewelry historian Monica McLaughlin tells us about some of the stranger items she's found.

The Victorians were obsessed with natural history, so I get where they were coming from, but creating earrings and pins from the heads of hummingbirds is too much for me. They weren’t only used in jewelry, either: Feathers and entire taxidermied birds of all sorts were used extensively as hat decorations during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Millions of birds were slaughtered in North and South America and elsewhere to meet the demand. I saw an image on Twitter recently of an American hat from 1890 that’s in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s a bonnet, and it has three green budgies just sort of stuck to it. The Met has a ton of other hats that also include birds, but in those, the birds are at least a little more artfully arranged so you can see the aesthetic thought behind them. But the budgie bonnet is just awful.

There's also jewelry meant to be a personal connection between lovers, jewelry meant to hide things, pornographic jewelry, and the occasional memento mori. Read an interview with McLaughlin and see a gallery of all kinds of antique jewelry at Collectors Weekly.

Three Hour Long Supercut Of Every NES Title Screen Ever Made

Old school gamers with no new games to play and nothing better to do might want to set aside some time, approximately three hours or so, and watch this compilation of every single NES title screen ever made in alphabetical order.

Press Start was made by YouTube user NicksplosionFX, and it's sure to bring back fond memories of waiting for your game to start, waiting for player two to get back from the bathroom, or waiting until you've finished your Hot Pocket before hitting the start button.

Some screens are a bit mundane, others are totally epic and exciting with full color pixelated visuals, and watching them all is the ultimate exercise in time wasting! Can you bear the full three hours of excruciatingly monotonous nostalgia?

A Ghost Ship Full of Cannibal Rats

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 11:00 AM PST

An abandoned cruise ship has been floating in international waters for months, since it came loose in a storm while being towed off the coast of Newfoundland. The company that intended to sell the Lyubov Orlova for scrap, Transport Canada, wrote the ship off after it determined that the ship “no longer poses a threat to the safety of [Canadian] offshore oil installations, their personnel or the marine environment.” But now it is feared that the drifting ship may be nearing the UK.

Two signals were picked up on the 12 and 23 March last year, presumably from lifeboats which fell away and hit the water, showing the vessel had made it two-thirds of the way across the Atlantic and was heading east.

A week later, an unidentified object of about the right size was spotted on radar just off the coast of Scotland – but search planes never verified the find.

Pim de Rhoodes, a Belgian salvage hunter who is among a number looking for the Lyubov Orlova off the UK coastline, told The Sun: “She is floating around out there somewhere.

“There will be a lot of rats and they eat each other. If I get aboard I'll have to lace everywhere with poison.”

The head of the Irish coastguard, Chris Reynolds, said the ship was more likely than not to still pose a threat.

Rats eating each other? The most reasonable response I can think of is KILL IT WITH FIRE! Or nuke it from space -it's the only way to be sure. Read about the Lyubov Orlova at The Independent. -via Metafilter

Pineapple Wrapped in Candied Bacon With Honey-Sriracha Sauce

We love sweets, bacon and Sriracha soooo much here at Neatorama and these amazing pineapple pieces wrapped in candied bacon and served with a Sriracha-honey sauce are pretty much everything we look for in a snack. Best of all, they only take a few minutes to make, so if you're one of those people that has a hard time not eating their bacon before they actually use it in a recipe, you might actually still have some left by the time you finish these -but be sure to cook extra anyway.

You can find out how to make your own over at The Cafe Sucre Farine.

What gives, little deer? You're supposed to be afraid of humans! Fear would serve you better in the long run. After all, the guy could've used that axe and had venison for dinner if he weren't so kindhearted. This happened just a few days ago in the forest near Tauragė, Lithuania.

I can hear it now: "I don't know, we were out to get some firewood, and this fawn came out of nowhere and heat-butted me. It wouldn't go away! Tiny little thing. It either thought it was defending its territory, or it wanted to be petted and wouldn't take no for an answer. Right, I figured you wouldn't believe us, so we took some video."

Disney Princess Gargoyles

Brianna Garcia is the artist who drew the main characters from My Little Pony as raptors. They were an internet sensation. She's also drawn several Disney princesses as gargoyles. Specifically, they're modeled on the 90s Disney television show Gargoyles.

Ah, the 90s! It was a very strong time for American animated television. That was the era of Batman: The Animated Series and Exosquad, two gems that are still worth watching again and again. Another fine show from that era was Gargoyles, the tale of several gargoyles frozen in time (and stone) in medieval Scotland and revived in the Twentieth Century.

Since Disney owns both Gargoyles and the princesses, there's no reason why they couldn't launch this concept as a show.

A New Theory to Explain How Life Began

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 08:30 AM PST

Scientists don't know how life on earth got its start, but they have ideas. The most popular to date is that a bolt of lightning or other power boost energized a soup containing all the necessary chemicals to get things going. But now a young MIT physicist has a different idea, based on the second law of thermodynamics.

From the standpoint of physics, there is one essential difference between living things and inanimate clumps of carbon atoms: The former tend to be much better at capturing energy from their environment and dissipating that energy as heat. Jeremy England, a 31-year-old assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has derived a mathematical formula that he believes explains this capacity. The formula, based on established physics, indicates that when a group of atoms is driven by an external source of energy (like the sun or chemical fuel) and surrounded by a heat bath (like the ocean or atmosphere), it will often gradually restructure itself in order to dissipate increasingly more energy. This could mean that under certain conditions, matter inexorably acquires the key physical attribute associated with life.

The reaction from other scientists is what you'd expect -interest, ranging from excited to skeptical, with a "wait and see" attitude. The next step is to run experiments to see how the theory stands up. Rather complicated experiments, I would guess. Read more about England and his ideas at Quanta magazine. -via Digg

Nursing Home Residents Re-Create Scenes From Their Favorite Movies

You’re never too old to have some photographic fun, and when life gets boring for retirement community residents in the Westphalia region of Germany they get all dressed up and re-enact scenes from some of their favorite movies.

The Essenes Contilia Group gathered seniors from ten different homes across the region, brought in wardrobes and props and shot these hilarious movie re-enactment shots for a calendar called Klassiker 2014, which was made strictly for the employees, residents and their families. The seniors look like they had a lot of fun starring in these Hollywood themed photos, and hopefully they'll be putting together another calendar for 2015.

A Guide To American Football

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 07:30 AM PST

(YouTube link)

The Super Bowl quickly approaches, so animator Fraser Davidson made a little guide to help you understand American football as it is played by the NFL. If you're one of those who watch for the commercials and the food and since everyone else is watching, but you don't really understand the game, well, honestly this won't help a whole lot, but it will probably make you laugh a little, and that's worth something.

Some football fans may say, "Duh, doesn't everyone understand football?" But the average NFL game this season has drawn 16.8 million viewers. That's up from last year, to a little more than 5% of the U.S. population! And outside of the U.S. it's probably not that big a ratings success. -via Viral Viral Videos

If you're a native English speaker, you may know more Japanese than you think. For example, the word "tycoon" has come to mean in English a wealthy and powerful business leader, such as the above pictured Howard Hughes. But originally, taikun (大君) referred to the shoguns of Japan, who dominated that nation for centuries until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

This is one of 11 English words of Japanese origin described by Michelle Lynn Dinh of Rocket News 24. Among them is, of course, anime. But as Dinh explains, the history of that word is a bit complex.

The Urban Green House Is Really Green

Posted: 23 Jan 2014 06:00 AM PST

No, I don't mean that the Urban Green House is colored green, it's green in the eco-sense of the word. In fact, it's pretty much wood, concrete and black siding on the outside. So how is it green? Well, it is designed to be narrow, letting air flow through naturally during the summer while the wide roof and porch prevents excess sun from entering your home.

The design, by Eric Odor with Chris Meyer of SALA Architects, also features passive solar heating, bamboo floors, composite fiber-cement siding and other eco-friendly elements.

Watch This Man Balance a Car on His Head for 33 Seconds

John Evans holds the Guinness World Record for the balancing the heaviest car on one's head. How did he discover that he has this talent? It started while he was working as a bricklayer. He discovered that he could do his work faster if he carried bricks on his head, thus leaving both hands free.

Evans is enormously strong and has put that ability to work as an entertainer and strongman. Over the course of his career, Evans has balanced on his head a 357-pound car, 275 full pints of beer and a girl inside a flaming oil drum.

In this video, Evans lifts a gutted 352-pound car and balances it on his head for 33 seconds.

This is one of 10 weird automotive world records rounded up by Jalopnik. You can view the rest here.
