Gaining inCITE into consumerization of IT

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

I'm heading to the CITE Conference next week in San Francisco to take the pulse of the consumerization of enterprise IT. This will be my first time attending the powwow, so I'm curious to see what I'll learn from the trip.

A glance at the agenda suggests that the conference will touch on relevant consumerization of IT themes such as BYOD, enterprise mobile app development, mobile talent management, mobile device and app security, enterprise social business transformation, mobile M2M, tablets in the workplace and mobility strategies.

There are also some curious choices for seminar topics, such as the multi-cloud model and the Mars landing and letting your employees to "go rogue."

I'm particularly curious to hear the keynote with Sundhar Annamalai, executive director of AT&T Advanced Mobility Solutions, and John Gallant, senior vice president and chief content officer at IDG Enterprise. They plan to discuss the challenges and opportunities of the connected organization.

Annamalai will talk about how a "highly secure infrastructure will serve as a guide to capture and process synthesized data from our connected society which allows you to deliver powerful contextual information tailored to employee preferred devices. This blueprint can drive better business processes and potential profits, while gaining employee productivity and satisfaction," the agenda write-up explains.

In addition, there will be some interesting panel discussions involving end users of mobile technology. For example, Michael Weeder, retail systems architect at True Value Company, will talk about how his company, which has 4,000 hardware stores, launched a mobile app inventory using a communications plan.

Gloria Burke, chief knowledge officer at Unisys, will describe how Unisys implemented an enterprise social business transformation effort that connected 23,000 dispersed employees and enabled them to connect, share and learn using a common enterprise-wide social platform.

Also, Lawrence Bader, director of UPS application development for transportation systems at UPS, will discuss how his firm implemented a mobile M2M system for its truck drivers by integrating M2M with legacy systems, greatly improving on-time performance.

I will be sharing these stories and more with you from the conference and will be conducting onsite Q&As that I will share with you over the next few weeks. Stay tuned. - Fred

Today's Top Stories

1. Android passes iOS in mobile ad traffic for first time

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Google's Android platform has passed Apple's iOS in mobile ad traffic for the first time, according to Opera Mediaworks' quarterly mobile ad report.

In the first quarter of 2014, Android had 42.8 percent of mobile ad traffic, while iOS had 38.2 percent of mobile ad traffic. Much of Android's gain came at the expense of BlackBerry and Symbian, the discontinued Nokia mobile operating system.

"With the Samsung [Galaxy] S4 and other newer Android phones, you're seeing more parity in users," Opera Mediaworks CEO Mahi de Silva is quoted by Robert Hof, a Forbes's contributor, as saying. As a result, "the quality of the ads served on Android devices is also more at parity with iOS," he adds.

Android's position at the top of mobile ad traffic might boost its position among app developers. "It used to be that developers focused on iOS first… We're starting to see they'll be equally compelled to come out on both platforms," says de Silva.

At the same time, iOS retained the lead in terms of mobile ad revenue, with 52.3 percent in the first quarter, compared with 33.5 percent for Android, which is up from 26.7 percent in the year ago quarter.

Among Android device makers, Samsung leads the way with 60.2 percent of Android mobile ad impressions, followed by LG at 11.1 percent and Motorola at 5.7 percent in the first quarter of 2014.

In terms of top app category, social led in terms of mobile add traffic, while arts and entertainment generated the most revenue and business, finance and investing had the highest revenue per impression in the 2014 first quarter.

The U.S. market generates the majority of mobile ad traffic and revenue, but Asia has passed Europe as the second largest mobile ad market, according to data from the Opera Mediaworks platform.

2. iPhone subsidies drag down profits at China Mobile

By Fred Donovan Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

After years of negotiations, China Mobile finally began selling Apple's iPhone to its 776 million subscribers in January. Now, the world's largest mobile carrier probably wishes it hadn't.

In fact, the cost of subsidizing the pricey iPhone actually dragged down China Mobile's profits in the first quarter, according to a Bloomberg report.

China Mobile posted its third straight drop in quarterly profit this week as the cost of subsidizing iPhones and building out 4G networks ate into profits.

Net income fell 9.4 percent year-over-year to about 25.24 billion yuan ($4 billion), well below the 27 billion yuan analysts had expected, Bloomberg reports.

At the same time, sales in the quarter rose 7.8 percent to 154.8 billion yuan, up from 143.6 billion yuan in the year-ago quarter, much higher than the 142 billion yuan analysts had expected.

Despite the surge in sales, China Mobile's shares dropped 2.6 percent, the most since mid-March, to close at HK$70 per share on Tuesday trading.

"These results were even worse than expected. China Mobile is going to suffer from even heavier pressure in the coming quarters as they raise handset subsidies, so their profit margin is going to further decline," Ricky Lai, a Hong Kong-based analyst at Guotai Junan Securities, tells Bloomberg.

The carrier expects its phone subsidy costs will increase 31 percent this year, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Although China Mobile doesn't provide data on iPhone sales, CNN estimated, based on consultations with analyst, that China Mobile had sold 18 million iPhones as of mid-March.

3. Macy's moves RFID beyond the supply chain

By Molly Bernhart Walker Comment | Forward | Twitter | Facebook | LinkedIn

Radio frequency identification, or RFID, was once seen as the future of supply chain efficiency, but these days it seems RFID's real value may be found in the storefront and not in the back room.

"When we look back, it almost seems silly that we started it as a supply chain tool," said Bill Hardgrave, the new dean of Auburn University's College of Business who once led research for Walmart and other retailers foray into RFID some 10 years ago.

Many retailers' distribution operations were already plenty efficient, he told Fortune in a recent article.

In 2009, Macy's saw the value in using the technology at retail locations, which resembles a barcode but works wirelessly and with more metadata. And with the rise of mobile devices and mobile commerce, RFID is more important to the store than ever.

"Knowing its customers will stand inside a Macy's store and comparison shop, the company is making sure that what its website says is in the store is actually in the store," says Fortune.

This month the company will begin asking more retailers to ship items pre-tagged with RFID with the goal of having half of all Macy's replenishment vendors sending RFID-tagged merchandise by the end of the summer.

As voice-over-LTE, also known as VoLTE, gains traction, IP multimedia subsystem, or IMS, is becoming a viable alternative to unified communications for medium to large enterprise communications, says ABI Research.
