Syrian Man Cares for Abandoned Pet Cats

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 04:00 AM PDT

A Syrian ambulance driver named Alaa has been taking care of the cities' cats, abandoned by their owners in the midst of constant shelling over the city of Aleppo, the largest in the war-torn country.

Alaa spends what amounts to $4.00 USD to purchase raw meat, after which he drives to Masaken Hanano, an area now uninhabited due to bombing. Hundreds of domestic cats, unaccustomed to procuring food for themselves, come running when Alaa appears.

It's always uplifting to witness the selflessness, empathy and heroism that the human spirit is capable of, even in tragic and desperate circumstances. Via Lost in E Minor

The Star-Spangled Banner Across America

The Crew is an a cappella group from, believe it or not, Canada. They describe themselves as a “certified organic all-Canadian hypoallergenic contemporary folky-pop acapolka comedy band-group/team.” To celebrate their 25th anniversary as a group, they visited 25 American landmarks to sing "The Star Spangled Banner." The banzai trip of 10,000 miles took only 12 days in a van. There are three different edits of this song (you can see them at their site), but they aren’t all that much different. How many of these places have you been to? I counted 13. I’ve got to start working on the other 12. -via Daily of the Day

Stacked: The Urban Architecture of Hong Kong by Peter Stewart

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 02:00 AM PDT

Australian photographer Peter Stewart's photo series "Stacked," of densely populated Hong Kong, give us an idea of the millions of worker bees that make up this giant hive habitat. Stewart's captures of Hong kong’s public housing developments are beautiful as well as dauntiing in the way they picture so much life in such limited space. Stewart uses compositing and color enhancement techniques during post processing to create these works of art.

20 Men Dressed as Female Characters from Pop Culture

Posted: 26 Sep 2014 01:00 AM PDT

On the right, you see the supervillain Mystique as played by Rebecca Romijn in the X-Men movies. On the left, you see a man cosplaying as her. And, I'll add, quite effectively. Both Romijn and the cosplayer have chosen to rely on minimal attire and body paint to convey their characters.

This is one of 20 pictures of men cosplaying as female characters rounded up by Pleated Jeans. Others include a hunky Misty, a bearded Sailor Moon, and a Catwoman(man) in a skin tight rubber suit.

Rowan Atkinson Inserted into Famous Paintings

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 11:00 PM PDT

Rowan Atkinson is a British actor best known for his comedic characters of Mr. Bean and Blackadder. He has been present throughout all of history (especially as Edmund Blackadder). Rodney Pike, a caricature artist, used his photoshopping skills to demonstrate this. Pike's collection shows Atkinson appearing through the brushes of Gilbert Stuart, William Adolphe Bouguereau, Hans Holbein, and other artists.

Statistically speaking, your chances are better at these schools. 24 Dangerous Toys from Past and Present

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 08:00 PM PDT

I have this weird fascination with deadly kid's toys. Meaning toys for children that generally were not well thought out or were not looked into ahead of time for safety precautions. In the 50's, you could pretty much hand cancer-causing mercury to kids and tell them to play with it. But thankfully, over time, things have changed.

The cool thing, we don't forget.

A great many of these deadly and dangerous toys may not exist anymore, but our minds wont let us erase them. There is a list of 24 Dangerous Toys from Past and Present over at URLesque, and I wont lie, a few of the items on the list shocked me. We are not just talking about small objects kids could choke on. We are talking about toys that could seriously kill your child. Like the above pictured "Atomic Energy Lab" which was just chock full of things no child should ever handle without a hazmat suit.

Now you just need to sit a kid down in front of the TV with a video game controller in their hand and they are fine for hours. But in the olden days, fun often went hand-in-hand with the risk of injury or death. I mean, all I need to end this on is two words to make my point:

Lawn darts.

Steamboat Rocket - When It Comes To Comedy This Guy's An Animal!

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Steamboat Rocket by MikeGoesGeek

When Rocket hit the intergalactic vaudeville circuit everyone wondered what sort of act he would be doing in order to entertain an audience. Rocket wasn't a particularly funny guy, unless you find grumpy furballs funny, but when he revealed that his pal Groot would be coming along for the ride people started to get interested. Rocket presented a singing and dancing baby Groot during a comedy bit and the crowd went wild, earning the duo a place among the stars as one of the most original, and feral, comedy teams in showbiz history!

Bring some classic animated style to your geeky wardrobe with this Steamboat Rocket t-shirt by MikeGoesGeek, it's one heck of a way to salute your favorite raccoon and tree comedy team.

Thumb Extender for iPhone 6 Users

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 06:00 PM PDT

Did you get an iPhone 6 yet? I hear the Plus model is bigger than previous iPhones -in fact, too big to fit in a skinny jeans pocket. Which is a good thing, because they’re kind of fragile, too. At least that’s what I’ve heard. But the biggest complaint so far is that a phone that size makes the keyboard harder to reach than a smartphone user is used to. Well, create a need and someone, somewhere, will jump in to fill that need. The Japanese company Thanko offers thumb extenders that make your thumbs long enough to use the bigger touch screen keyboard on an iPhone 6 Plus or a Galaxy Note. Order yours here, if you can read Japanese. Who knows? These may be as fashionable as those winter gloves with touch-screen-sensitive pads on the fingertips. -via Laughing Squid

Groomers Make a Dragon-Cat and a Bee-Dog

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 05:00 PM PDT

We all want a pet dragon, but we also don't want to die. This presents a conundrum, unless you can visit Dara Gotz's animal salon in Yekaterinburg, Russia. She dyes and trims cats and dogs to look like other animals. The dyes remain in place for several months, so you'll have plenty of time to embarrass your pets.

Sparked: A Breathtaking Cirque de Soleil Performance

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 04:00 PM PDT

Art is one thing, but art in motion is on a whole different and divine level. The performers for Cirque de Soleil are some of the best in the world at what they do. It is like a Terry Gilliam film brought to life before your very eyes, with zero room for failure.

To get an idea of just how utterly staggering their work is, check out Sparked. Humans and machines, moving in unison. It is like some beautiful fable that unfolds before your eyes in ways you could never have imagined. Keep in mind, were this a scene from a film, it would be all added by computers and MADE to look perfect, but this is live. This is real. This IS perfect. No CG. Just some remote controlled drones and some brilliant minds behind it all.

It is so mesmerizing it is hard to wrap your mind around.

(YouTube Link)

It is actually quite reminiscent of "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" but from Fantasia, where Mickey Mouse makes the brooms come to life, and then things get a little out of hand. This is like an adult version of that, only even more amazing to watch. Make sure to check out their YouTube page for more beautiful performances like Sparked.

The Best Piece of Street Art You Will See Today

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 01:00 PM PDT

ArtistCredit: JPS

Sometimes, a picture just speaks for itself. I feel like I could sit here and tell you all about a thousand reasons why the above example works so well, but the people who will love it will love it right away, and the people who don't get it, wont get it no matter what I say.

So rather, I will just tell you this is a piece of street art from London street artist JPS, and his work is some of the best and funniest stuff out there right now. While many street artists like Banksy and Shepard Fairy make a lot of statements about society and politics through their art, often, JPS' work will muster a laugh first, which is nice.

After all, it's not that serioius.

It's just life.

A Bad Lip Reading of The Walking Dead Season 4

The AMC TV show The Walking Dead returns for season five on October 12th. Fans of the show have been trying to forget how long the wait is, but as the new season nears, we get more and more reminders.

The folks at Bad Lip Reading have trod these waters before, but the show about a zombie apocalypse gives them so much fodder for new material that they’ve graced us with another reinterpretation of the show, with dialogue that fits those lips, but not the script. There’s even a musical interlude from Coral. This video is labeled “part one,” so you can look forward to more bad lip reading from season four. -via Tastefully Offensive

Hospital Design Looks Like a Ship

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT

It's a sleek, elegant clipper pulling up to the shore. But this one is permanently docked, since it's a hospital building. Architect Vasily Klyukin designed this hospital and spa complex for an economic development zone on the coast of Tunisia.

It's called White Sails. Klyukin conceives of it as a hospital that people would be glad to visit because it's beautiful and you go there when you're healthy.

That's because it's also a spa. Klyukin thinks that integrating rest, relaxation, and wellness activities into White Sails will encourage people to use its facilities happily and willingly.

Line-X and the Unsmashable Watermelon

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT

So do you guys know about Line-X? Normally, I try to avoid shilling products here, but this is science at some of its most mind-blowing, and you sort of need to see it to believe it. The long and the short is, Line-X is a spray coating full of polymers that makes pretty much anything in the world indestructible (shoulda tried it on my last relationship, wokka wokka).

What really makes the product so awesome is that they willingly test it on their YouTube channel. The stuff really blows the mind, but is taken to a whole new level when they try a watermelon smash. I think it is pretty clear how this will turn out, but you need to witness it yourself so that you can walk around all day buzzed off the madness of modern science. I am refraining from quoting Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad right now, but I think you know what I am thinking.

Moon Table

I find myself saying this repeatedly in furniture features: all it takes is one spectacular piece to make a room. A chair. Lamp. Rug. Staircase. Or in this case, a table. Something so eye-catching that it doesn't matter if all other pieces in the space barely register. Just one piece can set the tone and define your style. I think these tables fit that bill.

More Effective Than Wolfsbane! - Bloody Bela

More Effective Than Wolfsbane! by ShasteenFrey

Beware that clawing on your front door, especially when it is accompanied by the flapping of bat wings and the howling of wolves. These are the sounds of an unwelcomed visitor trying to invade your personal space, a gentleman caller who is just dying to sink his teeth into you! In case of vampiric invasion keep three things handy- garlic to deter, a crucifix to repel, and a stake when the other two simply aren't enough to get rid of this particularly batty pest.

How to Make a Pancake Flute

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Nathan Shields, our favorite pancake artist, has already mastered frying pancakes that look like creatures and using stencils to decorate pancakes. Now he's tackling a new challenge: making functional musical instruments with that great breakfast food.

Shields made a pancake with holes in the middle, then wrapped that pancake around a cylindrical mold. He sealed it with additional pancake batter and then placed a recorder mouthpiece in one end. Now it's a playable flute that his kids clearly love.

Norwegian Kids Know How to Party

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 07:30 AM PDT

In America, high school seniors get to go to a prom, maybe a class trip, or participate in an informal “skip day,” which is often punished. In Norway, the passage from childhood to adulthood is a month-long spring break party! The Russ celebration, or Russefeiring, runs from April 11 to May 17. School continues, but otherwise, 18-year-olds are living in in chauffeured busses and vans, roaming the country attending concerts and parties, and drinking. They wear brightly colored overalls and perform stunts to win tokens for their caps.

When you think of the most stunning movie makeup transformations, what characters do you envision? Come up with some answers and then watch the video to see if they covered any of your choices. Hidden Images In Album Cover Artwork

Posted: 25 Sep 2014 06:30 AM PDT

Cover art is a big part of a vinyl record's appeal, and some of the greatest artists of all time have created cool artwork to accompany killer cuts- Robert Crumb, Roger Dean, H.R. Giger, Edward Gorey and Andy Warhol, just to name a few.

(Image Link)

Over the years many of these cover artists have chosen to take the visual appeal even further by adding hidden images to their album artwork, like easter eggs for music lovers to discover while they listen to their new favorite album.

Some are more obvious, like the skull on Def Lepard's album Retro Active, others require a bit of a search, like the faces of The Beatles hidden in the cover art for The Rolling Stones album Their Satanic Majesties Request.

And what about the images found on the cover of Supertramp's Breakfast In America? They're best seen with hungry eyes.

Mental Floss put together an interesting collection of 10 Hidden Images on Album Covers, complete with the stories behind these captivating images record lovers stared at while grooving to their favorite tunes.
