| | | | | | | The buzz around Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is so loud it is sometimes deafening. Don't put away those earplugs just yet; the Linux Foundation announced a major twist in the NFV story that might blow open the whole proprietary comms infrastructure model. Literally. The Foundation has founded the Open Platform for NFV Project (OPNFV), a carrier-grade, integrated, open source reference platform intended to accelerate the introduction of new products and services in the NFV environment. A quick glance at the founding members, which includes AT&T, China Mobile, NTT DOCOMO, Orange, Vodafone and Sprint suggests that this story has serious legs. Oracle OpenWorld 2014 wrapped on Thursday, and, as expected, the company released quite a few new products and updates to existing solutions. Some of the more significant announcements included six new Platform-as-a-Service cloud offerings, an E-Business Suite for the mobile workforce, Virtual Networking Support for OpenStack, Data-as-a-Service (Daas), and enhancements to sales, social, government, and ERP clouds. Vodafone is expanding in the Americas, CenturyLink is moving into China, and merger and acquisitions activity is increasing, as vendors and service providers in the communications space continue to consolidate.
