Saartjie Baartman: The Original Booty Queen Posted: 16 Nov 2014 02:00 AM PST With so much publicity for Kim Kardashian’s butt on the cover of Paper magazine and Nicki Minaj’s music video for “Anaconda,” Jezebel takes the opportunity for a look back at the original booty queen, a 19th-century woman billed as “The Hottentot Venus.” Saartjie Baartman grew up in what is now South Africa, a member of the Khoikhoi people, who the Dutch called Hottentots. Her remarkably generous backside gave her employer the idea of taking her to Europe and exhibiting her for the masses who’d never seen such a thing.
Baartman became the toast of Europe, both as a curiosity and as a performer. And unlikes many people exhibited in the freak shows of the time, she was a willing participant in her show business career. Read Baartman’s life story, and the account of how she finally returned to South Africa, at Jezebel. The article contains nude illustrations.
Mind-Bending Optical Illusion Tattoo Posted: 16 Nov 2014 12:00 AM PST Paul O'Rourke of Allstar Ink in Limerick, Ireland made this amazing tat. If you ever meet the man who owns this ink, resist the temptation to try to reach through his arm in the hole that O'Rourke installed. Despite all appearances, it's not a radical new type of body piercing. -via io9
Posted: 15 Nov 2014 10:00 PM PST If you’ve surfed the internet at all in the last couple of days, you’ve seen references to Kim Kardashian’s photo spread in Paper magazine. The cover shows a rear view of her most prominent asset. It’s been discussed and passed around so much that LEGO artist Ochre Jelly (Iain Heath) couldn’t resist recreating it in LEGO.

5-Year Old Becomes the Youngest to Pass a Microsoft Exam Posted: 15 Nov 2014 06:00 PM PST Microsoft offers a wide array of tests that computer users can take in order to demonstrate their competency with Microsoft products. These users can then list those certifications on their resumes in order to impress perspective employers. One of the more demanding exams is the Microsoft Certified Professional. At 5 years old, Ayan Qureshi of Coventry, UK became the youngest person to ever successfully complete that exam. He's now 6. His father, an IT consultant, introduced Ayan to computers when he was 3. He found that Ayan could remember anything that he taught him on the subject. Gurvinder Gill writes for BBC News:

How 'Mantiques' Make It Cool for Average Joes to Shop and Decorate Posted: 15 Nov 2014 04:00 PM PST For some time, the common image of antique collectors was overwhelmingly feminine, the kind of person who collected old furniture, glassware, china, and jewelry. But that was just the popular image. There have always been men who appreciate the quality of things made long ago. However, men tend to collect more varied objects, such as gadgets, military memorabilia, tools, toys, and things that are hard to classify. A new word sprang up to describe these antiques: “Mantiques.” Collectors Weekly talked to Eric Bradley, author of Mantiques: A Manly Guide to Cool Stuff, about the new crop of male collectors.
Read the rest of the interview, learn about some of the cool things that people collect, and see a gallery of awesome pictures from Bradley’s book at Collectors Weekly.
Mom and Daughter Give Birth on the Same Day in the Same Hospital Posted: 15 Nov 2014 02:00 PM PST Nine months ago, Heather Penticoff, 40, and her daughter Destinee Martin, 20, of Lee County, Florida told each other that they were pregnant. The timing was coincidental and they kept it up. Both women had the same due dates. For different reasons, their 2 different doctors decided to induce labor for both women on Tuesday. Madeline, Destinee’s daughter, was then born. Two hours and 46 minutes later, Madeline’s nephew, Damien was born. That’s quite young to become an aunt! But the family is happy with this experience. Bryan Anderson of NBC 2 reports:

Posted: 15 Nov 2014 12:00 PM PST Ladies holding guns. Colorado. 1930s? Joel Snow found a stash of unlabeled negatives at a flea market. He photographed them, scanned them, and used Photoshop to convert them to positive images. All that work revealed a treasure trove of historical mysteries. Where and when were all these pictures taken? What’s the story behind them? Were they taken by the same person, or even the same family or company? Snow created a website to share the photographs called Vintage Photo Finds, where you’ll see plenty more. Wherever the site or the pictures are shared, people come forward who recognize the place, if not the people, and Snow updates the information as it comes in. Amazing shot of Nebraska potato farmers taking a break, or finishing up their day. There is an entire gallery of photos that have been identified as being from the Pershing Expedition, aka the Pancho Villa Expedition, aka the Punitive Expedition of 1916-1917. Soldier on a 1916 Harley-Davidson. Snow is trying to expand the project and make it self-sustaining, so that he may find and share more vintage photos. Japanese Fast Food Items Almost Too Crazy To Be True Posted: 15 Nov 2014 10:00 AM PST Whether they’re making a bold fashion statement, creating kooky themed restaurants or coming up with a new way to have a virtual girlfriend experience the Japanese don’t settle for slightly crazy- they do like Stallone and go over the top. The world of Japanese fast food is no different, and restaurant chains in Japan like Lotteria are constantly trying to come up with new food products that wow customers and outshine the competition. Cracked put together this list of 7 Japanese Fast Food Items (Almost) Too Insane To Be Real, which includes the delicious Kit Kat Pizza, vegetable flavored ice cream and the Attack On Titan burgers, which come in five, seven or ten patty sizes and destroy the walls...of your stomach. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if some of these strange taste sensations make their way to the U.S. soon, but if they do the Titan burgers and fries should come with a Surgeon's General warning!

Posted: 15 Nov 2014 07:00 AM PST Joe Kramer's short film Running the Gammatar is a lovely story about a young couple trying to negotiate a relationship while their city is being terrorized by a giant fire-breathing monster. It’s like rom-com meets Japanese monster movie, except this behemoth is uglier than any version of Godzilla, and his name is Gammatar. -via the Presurfer
Posted: 15 Nov 2014 06:00 AM PST Neongrey's Cat Petting Simulator is a text-based adventure game which permits you to experience the joy of petting a beautiful cat without getting cat hair on you or cat urine on your furniture. You get to name the cat, then interact with her. Decisions flow like a Choose Your Own Adventure novel. Don't worry too much about making a bad decision. You can save your game and then return to that save point. Or, if you're in the middle of a good petting and your boss insists that you do some actual work, you can come back to it later. -via David Thompson, who recommends the game to people with cat allergies. |
