Explaining This Octopus' Amazing Camouflage Skills Posted: 07 Feb 2015 02:00 AM PST Jonathan Gordon said he had no idea this octopus was there when he scanned his camera along the ocean floor while diving in the Caribbean. He was actually focusing on a shell when the octopus emerged. How does an octopus hide so well? Yes, they change color to match their surroundings, but since octopuses are colorblind, how does that happen? Mental_floss talked to Ernie Sawyer of the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago for an overview of what we know about the octopus and its amazing camouflage skills.
Posted: 07 Feb 2015 12:00 AM PST Thursday was World Nutella Day, a celebration of that wondrous hazelnut chocolate spread made by the Italian company Ferrero. To celebrate, Elizabeth of Sugar Hero made huge Ferrero Rocher candies. These are small balls of hazelnut and chocolate--luxurious bits of joy that are about an inch wide. Elizabeth's version is fully 5 inches across! They aren't simply enlarged versions of Ferrero Rocher candies. Such a concoction, Elizabeth explains, would not be able to hold together consistently. Instead, she made spheres of hazelnut chocolate mousse and cake that give you the same delicious experience.
Need a Dose of Sweet? Three Words: Bulldog Puppy Cam Posted: 06 Feb 2015 11:00 PM PST The Pet Collective presents an English bulldog cam, streaming live video of a litter of Minnesota-born English bulldog puppies and their tired looking, frequently nursing mama. There are five girls and two boys. The girls are Rainy, Glaze, Sandy, Stormy and Haily. The boys are Muggy and Fog. Few things are as predictably roly poly and sleepy.
If Disney Characters Were on Tinder Posted: 06 Feb 2015 10:00 PM PST Gaston's profile is about what you'd expect. And he probably gets a lot of right swipes for it. Peter Pan? You'd be surprised how close he is to you. Characters from Disney movies are looking for love or for someone--anyone--to fill the emptiness inside of them. So they've added the Tinder dating app to their smartphones. Shea Strauss of College Humor illustrates the results. -via Tastefully Offensive
Posted: 06 Feb 2015 09:00 PM PST Mental Floss host Elliot Morgan takes on the topic of crime in the latest episode of their "Misconceptions" series. Is violent crime on the rise? Is pleading insanity an effective defense? Is the prison population increasing? If so, why? How does the legalization of medical marijuana factor into the big picture? Mental Floss discusses these issues and more. -Via Laughing Squid

Ivete Medeiros of Belém, Brazil was shopping at a supermarket one day when she was accidentally shot by a criminal who was robbing another person. The bullet struck her in the chest, impacting along the underwire of her bra. Medeiros attributes her survival to God and her bra. The Guardian reports:
The manufacturer of her bra now has a great marketing opportunity. -via AP
8 Sick Remedies That Actually Work Posted: 06 Feb 2015 07:00 PM PST The skeptic in me said that treating a cold with chicken soup is an old wive’s tale. But since I am an old wife and a mom, I also told myself it couldn’t hurt, probably warms the sick child up, and gives them liquid and nutrients. And don’t we all crave comfort food when we’re sick? But some old wives really knew what they were talking about. AsapSCIENCE looks at home remedies for colds and other illnesses that have been in use for a long time, and the fairly recent scientific research that explores their effectiveness. Another video tells us about the remedies that don’t work. -via Viral Viral Videos

Posted: 06 Feb 2015 05:00 PM PST Ah, the good old days, when one could round up some oil of vitriol, powdered glass, orpiment, mercury, saltpeter, fulminating silver, and sulphur out of the cupboards and have a grand old time! The book Endless Amusement: A Collection of Nearly 400 Entertaining Experiments is online in its entirety through Project Gutenburg. The table of contents has linked page numbers, so I zipped down to the section on detonating various things.
The company may be much amused, but the person having to clean up broken glass or pick it out of their skin and hair will most likely not see much mirth in the situation. I skipped over to the section on amusing experiments in electricity.
Any volunteers? Not all the experiments are so ghastly. Making invisible ink couldn’t possibly cause injury.
Count me in -I’ll just run down to the pharmacy and ask for some aqua fortis and litharge of lead. There are plenty more dangerous experiments among the math puzzles and party tricks in this book from an unknown author and an unknown date, although the seventh edition was published in 1847. -via Metafilter
Truck Transmission Loses Reverse, Owner Devises Way to Make It Go Backwards Anyway Posted: 06 Feb 2015 04:00 PM PST YouTube user hexdude24 owns a truck. The reverse gear in his transmission went out. He can't afford to fix it. In the meantime, he's using this device that he made. It slips under his rear wheels. As he drives forward, it pulls his truck backward. Forgive me, readers: Alex hired me for my looks, not my brains. How does this system work? I'm struggling to understand it. -via 22 Words
Eleven Doctors - Don't Call It A Comeback Posted: 06 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST They're not the eleven from Ocean's, or the Council of Eleven from far off Crapstown, they're just eleven ordinary incarnations of one incredibly cool lord of time. Every one of the Doctor's incarnations comes equipped with cool clothes, a cool attitude and some really cool tech, including a screwdriver that makes some really cool noises, but the Doctor doesn't need gear or amazing alien powers to be a superstar. He's got that "who" factor, the kind of interstellar magnetism that drives his companions wild! Add ten plus one times the cool to your geeky wardrobe with this Eleven Doctors t-shirt by Tom Trager, and your fashion sense will go from ordinary earthling to out of this world! Visit Tom Trager's Facebook fan page, then head over to his NeatoShop for more geek-tastic designs:

The Most Common Job in Every State Posted: 06 Feb 2015 03:00 PM PST I'm a bit surprised. Since half of Neatorama's authors live in California, I had simply assumed that blogging is what most Californians do. But for California, like most of the country, the most common job is truck driving, as NPR learned by pulling US Census data. The maps are part of an interactive tool that shows the most common jobs for every quadrennium from 1978 to 2014. You can see the gradual reduction of secretaries, farmers, and machine operators for truck drivers, school teachers, and software developers. What do you think that a map like these for the year 2050 would look like? What jobs do you think will be common? -via TYWKIWDBI

Posted: 06 Feb 2015 01:00 PM PST Louise Low Seok Loo, a Malaysian artist, uses thousands of bra cups to form sculptures and cover other objects. Her shark called Fatal Attraction was the centerpiece of an exhibit last year in George Town, Malaysia. These bra works form her attempt to combat a superstition about women's underwear. The New Straits Times explains:

Adorable Advertisement Promotes Friendship Despite Differences Posted: 06 Feb 2015 10:00 AM PST This new advertisement for Android features animals of varied species enjoying each others' presence and obviously focusing on what unites rather than divides them. Perhaps humans could learn a lesson from such loving and tolerant behavior. The ad is set to "Oo-De-Lally," the song from from Disney's animated movie Robin Hood. -Via Tastefully Offensive
Ten Strange Medieval Animals You Might Not Have Heard Of Posted: 06 Feb 2015 09:00 AM PST It’s true; I have never heard of any of these fabulous medieval creatures before. The descriptions all compare parts of the beast to those of other known animals, which was necessary but not at all accurate. Then the animals are dressed up with strange powers from someone’s nightmares. There’s one that can move its horns around independently, another with wings even though it’s a fish, and then there’s the Bonnacon, a bull of sorts with a built-in flamethrower.
All these weird animals are illustrated with medieval art. You’ll need to scroll right on the post instead of the page to advance the list at Medievalist. -via Everlasting Blort
NES Power Glove Transformed Into A Powerful Animation Tool Posted: 06 Feb 2015 08:00 AM PST From a visual standpoint the NES Power Glove will always represent the technological shift that took place in the 1980s, but from a gamer’s perspective the thing was a piece of junk. It only worked for a handful of games, it most certainly wasn’t one size fit all, and by the time the SNES rolled around gamers had forgotten all about that gimmicky glove gathering dust in the back of their closet. Many Power Gloves were sold thanks to a movie called The Wizard, starring Fred Savage, but you know who’s a real wizard? Animator Dillon Markey, the guy who figured out how to transform that cheesy Power Glove into an awesome tool for the creation of stop motion animation. Dillon's upgraded Power Glove allows him to control animation software via Bluetooth connection, so he can do things like shoot still frames and play back shots all while moving freely about the studio. Now that's how you animate with Power! The documentary Playing With Power by Ava Benjamin showcases Dillon's ingenious upgrade for the Power Glove, and the numerous ways it aids him in creating stop motion scenes for the Adult Swim show Robot Chicken. -Via Cartoon Brew
Posted: 06 Feb 2015 07:00 AM PST A couple in Fort Oglethorpe, Tennessee, were arrested for shoplifting from Walmart. Police found $600 worth of merchandise in their car. Half of that value was in cheese- there were 57 blocks of it! Joshua and Erika Caldwell, both 21, are facing charges of theft and drug possession.
Maybe they had the munchies. However, throughout history, cheese has proven to be the most stolen food item in the world. They were also in possession of ten bottles of Tide laundry detergent, which is commonly stolen and resold. The Caldwells are currently out on bond. -via Arbroath
