Engineering students at Virginia Tech gave final touches to a six-foot humanoid robot that they created as part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency�s (DARPA) Robotic Challenge.
Graduate student John Seminatore, who is one of the 15 graduate students working full-time along with some other undergraduate volunteers, said that their robot �ESCHER� is a full-size humanoid electric robot that is 75 kg (160 pounds).
It has been told that ESCHER that has been built from scratch and untethered during the challenge will face 24 other robots and teams challenged.
Seminatore said, �Well if I can send robot in that clears the path for them opens doors turn the lights on that saving time they can be using to do real work where as the robot is doing much more Remedial tasks�.
Engineers affirmed that the technology that they have developed allows the robot to get adapted to different terrains. Also, the robot necessarily does not need a flat floor like the one seen in a laboratory.
It can walk on grass, on gravel, and also handle rubble, and has the strength to open doors clear stiff of the way, they said.
The team stated that sometime the task appears to be quite frustrating for them. But when they see the robot doing something, they realize how this can help in changing lives of people.
