Keep the American Dream Alive

By Jocelynn Smith, Sr. Managing Editor

Independence Day is always a favorite holiday among my family members. We gather together for a day of good food, good conversation and some spectacular fireworks — my brothers have a flare for explosions.

There is also a deep sense of appreciation for the freedom, opportunity and security we have — particularly in the face of the chaos and pain that grips so many places around the globe.

But there are cracks in America that are growing wider. The sense of opportunity is dwindling along with our freedom and security.

A recent survey conducted by The Atlantic and the Aspen Institute of 2,000 respondents found that most believe that the American Dream, which was largely defined as financial stability and security, was crumbling.

Of those listed in the general population, only 50% said that they were living the American Dream, while 28% said that they weren't living the Dream and didn't believe they could.

What's more, 75% said that the American Dream was suffering and 69% believe that there are more obstacles to realizing it today than there ever were before. As for future generations, 73% believe it will be even harder for their kids to achieve the prosperity that the U.S. once offered.

But Americans haven't given up all hope. The majority of respondents, 65%, believe that the American Dream is possible for those who work hard enough.

As we celebrate the birthday of our nation, it's a good time to reflect on her course, as well as the Dream that we were all raised on. We are not only the custodians of our own sovereign lives but of this country, as well. We cannot allow our elected officials to destroy our freedom, our privacy or our financial well-being. Keep the American Dream alive.

Happy Independence Day!
