28 Facts You Might Not Know about The Munsters

Posted: 27 Jul 2015 05:00 AM PDT

(Image: CBS)

Pay a visit to the family that lives at 1313 Mockingbird Lane. You'll meet the Munsters, a delightful group that isn't monstrous--once you get to know them.

Though The Munsters lasted only 2 seasons from 1964-1966, it remains a popular show and an icon of American television. Here are a few tidbits of trivia about the show that you might enjoy.

(Image: CBS)

1. The original unaired 1964 pilot episode was shot in color. Joan Marshall played the mother role, then named Phoebe. David Derman played Eddie Munster.

2. Although the first pilot episode was shot in color, the rest of the series was shot in black and white to save money. It certainly adds to the horror ambiance, don’t you think?

3. Bert Lahr, who played the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, was offered the role of Grandpa Munster.

4.Bill Mumy was offered the role of Eddie Munster.

5.John Carradine, a horror and Western actor, was offered the role of Herman Munster.

6. Grandpa was Lily’s father, but Al Lewis was a year younger than Yvonne De Carlo.

7. While Fred Gwynne attended Harvard, he drew cartoons for and was president of the famous Harvard Lampoon.

8. Gwynne became an accomplished artist and eventually wrote and illustrated several children's books.

(Image: CBS)

9. Al Lewis’s long prosthetic nose was eliminated after a few episodes because he kept getting it wet in his cups of coffee.

10. The Munsters own a cuckoo clock that contains a raven. It shouts “Nevermore!”, which is a reference to a famous Edgar Allen Poe poem. The voice of that raven is the legendary Mel Blanc.

11. Gwynne’s Herman Munster costume was brutally hot. It was essential to keep him cool, not only for his health, but to keep his makeup from melting. Between shots, a stagehand would shoot air with an air compressor up his sleeves to relieve some of the heat.

12. Two actresses played Marilyn Munster. Beverly Owen (left) asked to leave the show after 13 episodes. Pat Priest (right) replaced her.

13. Special effects technician Kenneth Strickfadden designed Grandpa Munster’s laboratory and Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory in the 1931 film Frankenstein. Grandpa’s lab includes some of the same props from Dr. Frankenstein's lab.

15. The Munsters’ hot rod car was made by the famous custom carmaker George Barris. He also made the Batmobile from the 1966 Batman series. Barris’s team made the Munster Koach, as he called it, from Model T bodies and a stretched 1927 touring car. Barris retained ownership of the car and rented it to the production studio. When it wasn’t in use, he took it to car shows all over the country.

16.The Munsters became so popular that Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis were invited to participate in the 1964 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. They rode down the street in the Munster Koach.

(Image: CBS)

17. Fans loved the Munster Koach, so the producers ordered another car from Barris for Grandpa. He named it Drag-u-la. It had a 289 cubic inch Ford Mustang engine and the body of a casket. Barris had enormous difficulty getting that casket. Stephen Cox quotes Barris:

“I went to several funeral parlors because I wanted to buy a real casket for this car, but they wouldn’t sell one unless you were dead.” Barris says, laughing. “Finally, one place had a broken one in the corner, but the owner wouldn’t sell it. I had a fellow put some money in an envelope and leave it while the owner and I took a walk out back. My guys picked up the casket and walked out. We literally spooked off with the casket.” (97)

18. The Munsters’ spooky house has appeared in many TV shows and movies and is still standing today on a Universal Studios lot. It was used just a few years ago for an episode of Desperate Housewives. Oprah Winfrey played a potential buyer of it. She was interested in the house, but decided against staying there because she found the neighborhood spooky.

19. Charles and Sandra McKee of Waxahachie, Texas are huge fans of The Munsters. When it was time to build their dream home, they recreated the Munsters' house. It’s a 5,825 square foot mansion that mimics the Munster home right down to the crooked weathervane and the grand staircase that opens up. Every Halloween, they use it to host huge parties to benefit charities.

20. Despite their similarities, the simultaneous Munsters by CBS and The Addams Family by ABC were created separately without inspiration by each other.

21.The Munsters inspired a vast variety of merchandise, including several card and board games.

22. The series was cancelled after 2 seasons, but not before the cast shot a made for TV movie called Munster, Go Home! In it, Herman inherits a fortune and a mansion from his uncle, a British earl. The family journeys to the UK and accidentally uncovers a counterfeiting operation.

23. In 1973, ABC created an animated pilot feature called The Mini-Munsters. Al Lewis voiced his old character in it.

24. In 1981, there was a TV reunion movie called The Munsters’ Revenge. Gwynne, De Carlo, and Lewis reprised their original roles.

How To Politely End A Conversation At A Party

Posted: 27 Jul 2015 04:00 AM PDT

(Image Link)

Sometimes it’s hard to politely remove yourself from a conversation at a party, and the last thing you want to do is make things awkward since you’re going to be stuck in a social situation with the person for a while.

So how do you move on without coming off like a total jerk? Chris Colin, author of What To Talk About: On A Plane, at a Cocktail Party, in a Tiny Elevator with Your Boss’s Boss shares his bold but effective approach to finishing a conversation at a party:

"Whether you’re having a lovely conversation or a crappy one, I think that the way to get out of either is identical," he says. "My approach is to look them in the eye with a big smile and say, 'It’s been so nice talking with you.' And then you just do a hard pivot and you walk away."

...

If you are hereby emboldened to try Colin's approach, note that the technique needs to be deployed with appropriate warmth and congeniality.

"What has to go with it is being a nice and decent person," says Colin. "When you say ‘It’s been nice talking to you,’ you should probably mean it, and you should communicate that with your eyes and your smile and all that stuff. If you do that, then I think it’s okay."

It’s just nice enough to keep you in a stranger’s good graces and assertive enough that it’ll even work on the Clingers and the Close Talkers.

Why Time Speeds Up As You Get Older

Maximilian Keiner gives us an interactive tool to simulate the advance of time over our lifespan. Be thankful that he gave us a 100-year life, as this is a data visualization about relativity. You scroll down to follow your life year after year -don’t worry, it doesn’t have events in it- and see where you are. It feels as if you’ll never get out of childhood, but then before you even realize it, years have slipped away in the blink of an eye. -via Digg

MAR-TI-NI - Let's Drink To The Droids!

Posted: 27 Jul 2015 03:00 AM PDT

MAR-TI-NI by Skullpy

The smuggler and the bounty hunter found themselves surrounded by a bunch of jabbering Jawas fully armed and in full force. The tiny wall of well armed guards parted to let the Jawa-in-charge through, who was carrying a case full of clanking contents. As the little boss opened the box the smuggler and the bounty hunter began to recoil, ready to go to war if need be, but what they saw next instantly put them both at ease. For the little boss held a bottle of booze in one hand and a long, skinny glass in the other, and in a croaking voice he said "Mar-ti-ni?"

Helen Mirren's Clever Approach to Packing for a Trip

Posted: 27 Jul 2015 03:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Helen Mirren News)

As a famous actress in high demand, Helen Mirren travels a lot. She has a neat travel tip that is not only practical, but also generous. Mirren doesn't pack any clothes except for underwear. After she flies into the airport of her destination city, she hires a taxi to take her to a thrift shop. There she buys the clothes that she needs. On her way back to the airport, she donates those clothes back to the shop. The Sunday Express quotes her:

I love a good charity shop, especially when I'm travelling. When I'm going to cold places, I take nothing - just underwear. On my way from the airport, I ask the driver to take me to a good charity shop, and I buy boots, socks, trousers, jumpers, sweaters, hats and scarves - usually for £30. . . On the way back to the airport, I have it all in a big bag and drop it off at another charity shop.

Harry in her New York City Studio, 1980

The lovely Deborah Ann Harry was born in 1945 in Miami, Florida and adopted by parents from Hawthorne, New Jersey, who owned a gift shop. After graduating high school and obtaining a two-year Associates of Arts degree, she went to work in Manhattan as a secretary for BBC Radio. Before she went on to conquer the mostly man's world of new wave, Harry worked as a New Jersey go-go dancer, a waitress at the legendary Max's Kansas City, at a disco and as a Playboy Bunny.

Harry's music career got started in the late 1960s, and by the early 1980s she was riding the High Tide and held her audiences in Rapture. Thanks to Deborah Harry's songwriting and singing talent, stage presence and sophisticated beauty, she's remained in the limelight ever since. See 13 more gorgeous portraits of Blondie here.

Some Things are Built to Last

Driving the same car for 77 years wouldn’t be too bad if it was this car. Allen Swift of Springfield, Massachusetts, completed college in 1928. His father bought him a Rolls Royce Piccadilly P1 Roadster as a graduation gift. Swift took good care of his car, and drove it until his death in 2005.

Swift was a legend among Rolls-Royce collectors for owning his green Phantom I, S273 FP Rolls longer than anyone in the world had ever owned an individual Rolls-Royce. In recognition of that fact, Rolls-Royce Motors presented him with a crystal Spirit of Ecstasy award at the Rolls-Royce Annual Meeting in 1994.

In fact, Swift Swift also set a record for being the oldest living person to have owned a car from new.

Swift bequeathed his vehicle and a million dollars to the Springfield Museums. The car is now on display at the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History. -via reddit

Airbnb Lets You Stay in a Van down by the River

Posted: 27 Jul 2015 12:00 AM PDT

In a classic Saturday Night Live sketch, Chris Farley plays Matt Foley, a motivational speaker who is basically a failure in life. By his own admission, he qualifies because he's 35, divorced, and lives in a van down by the river. He threatens wayward teens that if they don't get their lives turned around, they'll end up like him, living in a van down by the river.

(Photo: Airbnb)

Now you can live that way, too! Airbnb renter Jonathan has converted a few vans in New York City into little campers. They're parked as normal vehicles, so visitors can get the full experience of urban van-dwelling life. $35 per night can get you a bed that sleeps 2 near New York's scenic East River.

18 Straightforward Facts About Donnie Darko

Posted: 26 Jul 2015 08:00 PM PDT

Image: 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Director Richard Kelley's film Donnie Darko was released in 2001. The story of the deliciously eerie puzzle that is Donnie grossed a respectable $7.7 million after the initial budget of $4.5 million. Yet unsurprisingly, elements of the tale continued to capture the imagination of viewers for years to come, guaranteeing the film a definite "cult hit" status. Part of Darko's appeal was its many memorable characters, one of which was the late Patrick Swayze's portrayal of Jim Cunningham. According to Kelley, Swayze relished the part, and dug into fleshing out the character with enthusiasm — and personal touches.

"6. PATRICK SWAYZE WORE HIS REAL CLOTHES FROM THE 1980S.

Jim Cunningham’s Cunning Visions infomercials were even shot at Swayze’s ranch in Calabasas, California. When asked about working with the actor, Richard Kelly confirmed that, "He''s the nicest guy ... He wanted to take a flame-thrower to his image. He was fearless. We shot the infomercials on his ranch. Those were his real clothes from the '80's. He frosted his hair specifically for the part. He totally got it and was so cool about it."

Sitting Inside A Giant Water Balloon When It Explodes

The Slow Mo Guys are nothing if not adventurous, and their quest to entertain us with silly videos often leaves them all wet.

But now Dan Gruchy and Gavin Free are exploring a whole new level of stunt strangeness by making Dan crawl inside a giant balloon, which is then filled with water until it explodes.

The Slow Mo Guys filled another 6 foot long balloon with water a while back and jumped on it until it burst, but that video lacks the cringeworthiness this stupid stunt has in spades. And seeing Dan sitting there with his head sticking out of a giant watery balloon sac is utterly hilarious!

If you think that sounds silly, consider this: Peter Dinklage doesn't watch Game of Thrones for one simple reason -he doesn't have HBO.

Shimmering Kinetic Sculpture Made from Thousands of Eyeglasses

Posted: 26 Jul 2015 08:00 AM PDT

This is sea/see/saw, a kinetic sculpture by Caitlind r.c. Brown and Wayne Garrett. The two artists from Calgary, Alberta used 14,000 lenses from discarded eyeglasses to make this massive, shimmering display at the front of the Pera Museum in Istanbul. It's designed to mimic the way the light dances on the surface of the Golden Horn, the waterway that for nearly two millennia has brought riches into that city.

The Pera Museum occupies the former Hotel Bristol, which was built in 1893. Brown and Garrett made this sculpture to honor the museum on its tenth anniversary. They explain:

[…] sea/see/saw invites viewers to re-examine a familiar space through a new lens. Museums change our perceptions of culture, art, history, and our current time and place. sea/see/saw’s use of lenses playfully speaks to changes in perception, celebrating Pera Museum’s contribution to Istanbul’s cultural landscape, with an eye focused on the future.

How Female Video Game Characters Would Look With Realistic Body Shapes

Posted: 26 Jul 2015 07:00 AM PDT

No matter where you stand on the topic of sexism in pop culture one thing is for certain- the female body is most often portrayed in an idealized form in visual media such as comic books and video games.

Sometimes this idealized form ties in well with the character, like when the character is an athlete in peak physical shape, but a lot of times they’re just drawn that way because creators think it will help them sell their product.

It’s not meant to be a slight against “average” women, and yet it’s hard to deny the impact these unrealistic body shapes have on young women.

Which is why treatment oriented website Bulimia.com created their own versions of female video game characters with what they describe as “average American body shapes”.

I agree with some of the makeovers but I don't think they put enough thought into the characters they chose for the project, because why would a Special Forces officer/pit fighter who trains constantly be overweight?
