Butterfly Drinking the Tears of a Turtle

Posted: 07 Aug 2015 04:00 AM PDT

(Photo: Amalavida.tv)

Butterfly's revenge was sweet. Oh, yes, so very, very sweet. Turtle had finally paid for his crimes in full. He wept at what was to become of him and the life he had built--as the empire he had forged with his own claws crumbled around him.

Butterfly savored the moment in the most literal way possible by drinking the tears of his most hated enemy. Years later, he would, while reminiscing of this perfect moment, claim that he could still taste them in his mouth.

Turtle remembered, too. He couldn't ever forget that time of supreme humiliation while down in the gahenna where Butterfly had left him. It was carved into his soul.

He had learned something from that horrible moment. It was something important. It was something that he would one day teach to Butterfly.

Never leave an enemy behind you.

Actually, there's no reason to think that this Julia Butterfly (Dryas iulia) and turtle in Ecuador know each other. The butterfly is engaging in lachryphagy, which is the insect practice of drinking tears from larger animals. The butterfly is doing this for nutritional purposes only--as far as we know.

Buildings Cleverly Constructed Around Existing Trees

Posted: 07 Aug 2015 03:00 AM PDT

(Image Link)

Constructing a new building generally involves trees being cut down, whether it’s the trees used for the building lumber or trees which are cleared off the building’s lot.

But a clever architect can figure out ways to build around the trees, which means a far more visually appealing structure is built and a happy little tree gets to live.

(Image Link)

Trees bring us life, and much of our lives plays out inside buildings, so it naturally makes sense to leave the tree where it is and build around it rather than killing the tree

Bored Panda has created an open list for images of Clever Buildings Whose Architects Refused to Cut Down Local Trees, which includes this thorougly modern treehugger's home at the foot of Pedra de Gavea in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

Man Celebrates Longest Birthday Ever by Traveling across International Date Line

Sven Hagemeier’s birthday lasted 46 hours, setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest birthday ever. He accomplished this feat by flying from New Zealand, then to Australia, and then to Hawaii, crossing over multiple time zones (6, by my count) and the International Date Line the process. Rachel Swatman writes for Guinness World Records:

Sven's elongated birthday celebrations beat the previous record set by Nargis Bhimji of Karachi, celebrated her birthday for 35 hours 25min by crossing time zones after flying from Karachi to Singapore and then to San Francisco back in June 1998. […]

The birthday-boy spent the majority of two days in an aeroplane enjoying plane food, working out how to stay comfortable on long-haul flights, and communicating using hand-gestures.

Here's a secret: the ice ceam cone isn't a man inside an ice cream cone costume, but a robot controlled by tiny ice cream cones inside.

8-Bit Shining - Now With More Pixelated Gore!

8-Bit Shining by tomburns

There was an 8-bit video game adaptation of The Shining in the works back in 1984, but the game never made it past the playtesting stage. It seems the game had a nasty habit of turning those who are all work and no play into mindless killers, and the game's developers didn't want any redrum on their conscience, so they scrapped "Project Here's Johnny". But one cartridge remained, smuggled away in a programmer's backpack for the sake of posterity, and the Overlook Hotel's evil influence is still hidden away inside the game's code...

Add some retro redrum to your geeky wardrobe with this 8-Bit Shining t-shirt by tomburns, it's all fun and no work to put a smile on your fellow Shining fan's faces!

Woman Discovers She Has Carried Fetus In Her Womb For Over 60 Years

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 11:00 PM PDT

Losing a child can be devastating, whether the loss is in utero or after birth, but imagine finding out that you lost a child over 60 years ago when you didn’t even know you were pregnant, much less able to conceive.

What could make that discovery even worse? How about finding out you'd been carrying that dead child with you for over sixty years.

(YouTube Link)

That’s the real life horror story experienced by 91-year-old Estela Meléndez of La Boca, Chile, who went to see the doctor about removing a tumor they saw in an X-ray of her stomach.

The tumor was actually a calcified fetus she'd been carrying in her uterus for over 60 years, but it doesn't pose a threat to Estela they decided to leave it in place.

Estela says she's glad the fetus will remain in her womb, because it "reminds her of her husband and their unfulfilled dream of having a child all those years ago." How sickeningly sweet!

Awesome Dad Gets a Tattoo of His Daughter's Cochlear Implant

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 10:00 PM PDT

(Photo: Alistair Campbell)

6-year old Charlotte Campbell of Taupo, New Zealand got her first cochlear implant 2 years ago. Now she has two. Her father, Alistair, wanted her to feel less self-conscious about them. So he shaved his head and got a tattoo of a cochlear implant right where it would be if he had one, too. He told the New Zealand Herald that Charlotte loves it:

Mr Campbell had shaved his head completely to get the tattoo done but said he would be letting his hair grow back.

He'd shave it off again and show off the tattoo at "special occasions," or if Charlotte wanted to see it.

When Charlotte saw her dad's version of a cochlear implant she giggled, touched it and told him it was "cool".

Fashion Trend: Heart-Shaped Hair Bangs

Brian Ashcraft of Kotaku reports that an exciting new hair fashion is sweeping South Korea: bangs that look like upside-down hearts. It's especially popular among teenagers and twentysomethings, who have been styling their hair and uploading photos of themselves on Twitter and Instagram. It requires careful work with a curling iron and hairspray, but the eye-catching results are surely worth it.

Man Builds Feline Feeding Machine, Cat Hunts For the Key to His Dinner

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 07:00 PM PDT

YouTube Link

Self described “aspiring geek” Ben Millam got impressively creative when it came to feeding his cat. He built this clever cat feeder that releases food upon recognition of RFID-tagged plastic balls. Millam places the balls all over the house, giving his cat Monkey a bit of a game with his noms. Monkey finds the hidden balls, drops them into a bowl fitted on top and bam, kitty chow!

Cat lover Millam says he built the device in order to give Monkey extra excitement and fun in his daily life.

"This all started after I read an explanation of why cats go about repeatedly exploring the same areas: it’s partly to establish and survey their territory, but they’re also practicing ‘mobile’ hunting: moving about, being curious, and poking their noses around in the hopes of upsetting potential prey and finding a meal. So what if my cat, while out on patrol, actually found its prey? Surely this would bring him one step closer towards a more fulfilled and self-actualized indoor kitty existence."

Bravo Ben!

Elephant Drinking from a Toilet

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 05:00 PM PDT

(Video Link)

Carina Blofield of Africa Geographic recently visited elephant habitats in Botswana and Zimbabwe. On the safari, she stayed at the Elephant Sands Lodge in Botswana. It's located at a popular elephant watering hole, so it's a great place to see these giant animals up close.

(Photos: Carina Blofield)

The toilets are surrounded by large pointed rocks. These are put in place to discourage elephants from getting too close.

Some thirsty elephants brave them anyway, then reach down into the toilets to suck water from them up their trunks.

A Flowchart To Help You Decide Whether You Should Quit Your Job

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 01:00 PM PDT

Sometimes it’s hard to work for the same company for years, and jobs often leave you feeling underpaid, underappreciated and wishing you were at home watching afternoon TV and collecting an unemployment check.

But it’s even harder to tell when it’s time to quit, especially because you may feel like storming out the door one day and wake up feeling like you’ve just made a huge mistake the next.

So how do you know when to walk away from your job?

Logically you shouldn’t quit until you’ve got something else lined up, but if you feel like you need to jump ship right away then consult this clever flowchart designed by Julio Rivera for the BBC.

It'll help you navigate the sea of "should I or shouldn't I?" questions keeping you from making a decision about quitting, and it's entertaining to read through too!

Inspirational Quotes with an Irreverent Twist

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Illustrator and cartoonist David Ostow's series of "updated inspirational quotes" is just the thing for people who are occasionally rubbed the wrong way by Pollyanna-ish "inspiration," whether it's in the form of a graphic shared by your most peppy social media connection or uttered verbally by a perky coworker first thing in the morning.

Ostow takes the most cliched of sayings and gives them delightfully twisted twists. But he doesn't take the whole thing seriously, and hopes those who read the series don't either. He told BuzzFeed,

"I’m all for the power of positive thinking but aphorisms are by nature reductionist…I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, I just hope these make people laugh.”

The 70th Anniversary of the Bombing of Hiroshima

Seventy years ago today, August 6, 1945, the U.S. dropped the world's first atomic weapon
on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Three days later, a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, and Japan surrendered on August 15, ending World War II. Those events ushered in the nuclear era.

Royal Titles Fit Pets Better Than People

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 10:00 AM PDT

John Oliver recently discussed the British House of Lords, which is something few Americans are familiar with. One of the oddest aspects (at least, to Americans) of the House of Lords is their official titles that sound equally pompous and preposterous. Never has this point been quite so well illustrated than in the "And Now" segment of the show, where he demonstrated that these names actually work better for adorable pet names than actual titles for people.

Nine Things You May Not Know About Breasts

Are you a woman who thinks she knows everything there is to know about boobs? Are you a lover of women's boobs and think you know everything there is to know about the objects of your desire? In that case, it wouldn't hurt to give this IFL Science article a minute of your time, just to make sure your boobie game is on point. Their article lists nine facts about breasts, and I wouldn't for a minute want you to be uninformed. Come on. It's science.

Here's one fact to get you started:

"

5. Everyone stares at your breasts. EVERY. ONE.

According to a study where women and men were fitted with an eye-tracking device, both were found to look at a woman’s boobs instead of her face but men do it for longer. So women do boob-watch too but they’re just quicker about it."

Happy studying.

Watch the Moon Cross the Earth

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 08:00 AM PDT

(YouTube link)

Did you know we have a satellite orbiting a million miles from Earth? That’s beyond the orbit of the Moon. The image here was captured last month by NASA’s Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) on the DSCOVR satellite. It shows the “dark side” of the moon that is not visible from Earth, although it is lit by the sun in the images.

EPIC maintains a constant view of the fully illuminated Earth as it rotates, providing scientific observations of ozone, vegetation, cloud height and aerosols in the atmosphere. Once EPIC begins regular observations next month, the camera will provide a series of Earth images allowing study of daily variations over the entire globe. About twice a year the camera will capture the moon and Earth together as the orbit of DSCOVR crosses the orbital plane of the moon.

These images were taken between 3:50 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. EDT on July 16, showing the moon moving over the Pacific Ocean near North America. The North Pole is in the upper left corner of the image, reflecting the orbital tilt of Earth from the vantage point of the spacecraft.

The far side of the moon was not seen until 1959 when the Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft returned the first images. Since then, several NASA missions have imaged the lunar far side in great detail. The same side of the moon always faces an earthbound observer because the moon is tidally locked to Earth. That means its orbital period is the same as its rotation around its axis.

Woman Captures Photographic Proof Of The Lizard Man Of Lee County

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 07:00 AM PDT

(Image Link)

If you ever see a lizard man while you’re walking around Scape Ore Swamp in South Carolina don’t stop to sketch the creature, put away your sketchbook and run like hell!

Most of the witnesses who’ve sworn they spotted the Lizard Man of Lee County swear it looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, but one man was brave enough to sketch the creature after it attacked him:

(Image Link)

You may be asking yourself- how can South Carolina officials let some scary creature roam around Scape Ore Swamp attacking people? Because they don't believe that the cryptid actually exists, even with Christopher Davis' signed sketch offered up as proof.

So what's it gonna take to get them to send in the National Guard and slay the beast once and for all?

This photo shot by a woman simply known as "Sarah", who purportedly spotted the Lizard Man of Lee County while at church, should spur them into action:

(Image Link)

This cryptid case has left us with three nagging questions- does this photo prove the existence of the fabled Lizard Man of Lee County? Is he more man than lizard, or more lizard than man? and are they filming a new Godzilla movie nearby?

A Few Facts You May Not Know About Lucille Ball

Posted: 06 Aug 2015 05:00 AM PDT

Neatorama presents a guest post from actor, comedian, and voiceover artist Eddie Deezen. Visit Eddie at his website or at Facebook.

[ed. note: Lucille Ball was born on August 6, 1911. Today would have been Lucy’s 104th birthday.]

Who doesn't love Lucy? We can all argue about favorite movies and best actors and finest directors, but when almost anyone is asked "Who is the funniest lady in the history of television?" the answer is pretty much unanimous.

Lucy was a brilliant comedienne, and her classic TV series I Love Lucy has undoubtedly been seen by more people, around the world, than any show in history. Okay, let's take a look at the legendary redhead (one of John Belushi's supreme idols, by the way) the one and only Lucille Ball…

* She used to work as a soda jerk (jerk-ess?). She was fired because she kept forgetting to put bananas in banana splits.

* Lucy was born a brunette. She later was a blond model. It wasn't until she was pushing 30 that Lucy first dyed her hair the world-famous red color. She became a redhead to appear in the 1943 movie Du Barry Was a Lady.

* She modeled under the name Dianne Belmont (after the Belmont racetrack.) She usually modeled heavy fur coats because she was so excessively thin as a young girl.

* Lucy had no eyebrows. For her first movie role in Roman Scandals (1933) she shaved her eyebrows off. (She played a slave girl.) They never grew back.

* Her favorite movie role was in The Big Street (1942). Lucy was extremely proud of her performance and she never forgave ASCAP for not nominating her for a Best Actress Academy Award.

* Lucy was stricken with rheumatoid arthritis early in her modeling career. It took her two full years to re-learn how to walk.

* The first time she met future husband Desi Arnaz, Lucy had a black eye and a torn dress. She had been filming a fight scene in the movie Dance, Girl, Dance (1940). Lucy later put on her own clothes and make-up and saw Desi again.

Desi, who at first did not find her attractive, immediately changed his mind. “That's a big hunk o' woman,” he said.

* Lucy was terrified of birds. Because birds were her main phobia, Lucy refused to stay in any hotel room that had pictures of birds or had birds on the wallpaper. No birds or pictures of birds were ever allowed in her home.

* She was superstitious about using the letters "A" and “R.” Lucy considered them good luck.

* In I Love Lucy she played "Lucy Ricardo.” In The Lucy Show she played "Lucy Carmichael.” In Here's Lucy she played "Lucy Carter.” In Life with Lucy she played "Lucy Barker.”

To her, her career was not hugely successful until she became "Lucy Arnaz" after marrying Desi Arnaz.

* Lucy once panhandled for a penny. As a young girl in New York, she once reached in her pocket and found four cents- one cent shy of subway fare. She panhandled on the street for the penny, until a strange man saw her and offered her ten dollars. (The man was implying he wanted "favors" in return for the money.)

“Look mister,” said Lucy, "All I want is one penny!"

* She was the first woman to ever own her own film studio. As in every actress's (or actor's) dream, she bought RKO studios, a studio that had rejected and fired her earlier in her career.

* Lucy did I Love Lucy to keep her marriage together. Lucy wanted to do the series so she would be able to keep her eye on her "wandering" husband, Desi Arnaz, who had an eye for the ladies.

* Henry Fonda was in love with her. According to Fonda's daughter, Jane, her dad fell "deeply in love" with Lucy during the filming of their movie Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). The two were "very close,” recalled Jane (in a Barbara Walters interview).

* She sent Carol Burnett flowers on her birthday. Lucy passed away on April 26, 1989. That day, Carol Burnett received the flowers Lucy had sent her for her birthday.
