The Wags of the Dog

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

The following is an article from The Annals of Improbable Research.

Dog tail-wagging research
by Otto Didact, Improbable Research staff

Detail from the study "A Vicious Cycle: A Cross-Sectional Study of Canine Tail-Chasing and Human Responses to It, Using a Free Video-Sharing Website."

Human Responses to Canine Tail-Chasing
“A Vicious Cycle: A Cross-Sectional Study of Canine Tail-Chasing and Human Responses to It, Using a Free Video-Sharing Website,” Charlotte C. Burn, PLoS ONE, vol. 6, no. 11, 2011, e26553. The author, at the Royal Veterinary College, North Mymms, Hertfordshire, UK, reports:

Tail-chasing is widely celebrated as normal canine behaviour in cultural references. However, all previous scientific studies of tail-chasing or ‘spinning’ have comprised small clinical populations of dogs with neurological, compulsive or other pathological conditions; most were ultimately euthanased. Thus, there is great disparity between scientific and public information on tail-chasing. I gathered data on the first large (n = 400), nonclinical tail-chasing population, made possible through a vast, free, online video repository, YouTubeTM.... Approximately one third of tailchasing dogs showed clinical signs, including habitual (daily or ‘all the time’) or perseverative (difficult to distract) performance of the behaviour. These signs were observed across diverse breeds. Clinical signs appeared virtually unrecognised by the video owners and commenting viewers; laughter was recorded in 55% of videos, encouragement in 43%, and the commonest viewer descriptors were that the behaviour was ‘funny’ (46%) or ‘cute’ (42%).

Detail from the study "Asymmetric Tail-Wagging Responses by Dogs to Different Emotive Stimuli."

Asymmetric Tail-Wagging Responses by Dogs
“Asymmetric Tail-Wagging Responses by Dogs to Different Emotive Stimuli,” A. Quaranta, M.
Siniscalchi, and G. Vallortigara, Current Biology, vol. 17, no. 6, March 29, 2007, pp. 199-201. (Thanks to Marie Estock for bringing this to our attention.) The authors, variously at the University of Bari, Italy, and at the University of Trieste, report:

Here we report some unexpected and striking asymmetries in the control of tail movements by dogs: differential amplitudes of tail wagging to the left or to the right side associated with the type of visual stimulus the animals were looking at....

When faced with their owner, dogs exhibited a striking rightsided bias in the amplitudes of tail wagging. A similar striking bias was observed when dogs were shown an unfamiliar human being, though with an overall decrease in the amplitude of tail wagging. When faced with a cat, dogs showed very reduced tail wagging movements, but still there was a slight bias favouring the right side. In contrast, when tested alone or in the presence of an unfamiliar conspecific, dogs showed a left-sided bias of tail wagging.

Further detail from the study "Asymmetric Tail-Wagging Responses by Dogs to Different Emotive Stimuli."

Dogs with a Wider Angle of Wag Are at Risk
“Risk Factors for Tail Injuries in Dogs in Great Britain,” G. Diesel, D. Pfeiffer, S. Crispin, and D. Brodbelt, Veterinary Record, vol. 166, no. 26, June 26, 2010, pp. 812-7. The authors report:

Data were obtained from a stratified random sample of veterinary practices throughout Great Britain, and questionnaires were sent to owners of dogs with tail injuries and owners of a randomly selected sample of dogs without tail injuries.... Two hundred and eighty-one tail injuries were recorded from a population of 138,212 dogs attending 52 participating practices.... Dogs with a wide angle of wag and dogs kept in kennels were at significantly higher risk of sustaining a tail injury. Dogs with docked tails were significantly less likely to sustain a tail injury.

Left/Right Tail-Wagging in Dogs Looking at Video of Dogs

Detail from the study "Seeing Left- or Right-Asymmetric Tail Wagging Produces Different Emotional Responses in Dogs."

“Seeing Left- or Right-Asymmetric Tail Wagging Produces Different Emotional Responses in Dogs,” Marcello Siniscalchi, Rita Lusito, Giorgio Vallortigara, and Angelo Quaranta, Current Biology, 23, no. 22, 2013, pp. 2279-2282. The authors report:

Left-right asymmetries in behavior associated with asymmetries in the brain are widespread in the animal kingdom [1], and the hypothesis has been put forward that they may be linked to animals’ social behavior [2,3]. Dogs show asymmetric tailwagging responses to different emotive stimuli [4]—the outcome of different activation of left and right brain structures controlling tail movements to the right and left side of the body. A crucial question, however, is whether or not dogs detect this asymmetry. Here we report that dogs looking at moving video images of conspecifics exhibiting prevalent left- or rightasymmetric tail wagging showed higher cardiac activity and higher scores of anxious behavior when observing left- rather than right-biased tail wagging.

Further detail from the study "Seeing Left- or Right- Asymmetric Tail Wagging Produces Different Emotional Responses in Dogs."

Finally! The US May Lift Its Ban on Haggis

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 04:00 AM PST

(Photo: Tess Watson)

Although haggis may be found in the wild and hunted in Scotland and some parts of northern England, it is not native to the United States and attempts to introduce it have failed.

For those of us in the States who enjoy the refined taste of haggis, the 1971 federal ban on the importation of this Scottish delicacy has long been a source of frustration. But now the US is considering dropping the ban, provided that haggis manufacturers remove one essential ingredient from the dish: sheep lungs. The BBC reports on the saintly labors of the Scottish official Richard Lochhead:

The rural affairs secretary told the BBC: "Tens of millions of Americans want to enjoy Scotland's national dish. Now it may be that we'd have to tweak the recipe for haggis to get into the US market, because some of the ingredients - such as sheep lungs - have been banned since 1971.

"But I think our own producers here in Scotland are up for tweaking the recipe so that US customers can still get as close as possible to the real thing.

Perhaps we will finally see the end of this irrational Scotophobic prohibition.

16 Straightforward Facts About <i>Sideways</i>

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

Sandra Oh, Thomas Haden Church, Virginia Madsen and Paul Giamatti in Sideways | Image: Fox Searchlight

If you've ever seen Alexander Payne's 2004 movie Sideways, you're familiar with at least two of the director's sardonic (as well as his sardonic treatment of) film characters. In this case, Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church as Miles and Jack are having a last hurrah before Jack's wedding, and it involves quite a bit of drunken debauchery. How drunken? Well, there seems to be a difference of opinion on that between Church and Giamatti. Let mental_floss, in their list of facts about Sideways, explain:

5. THE ACTORS DRANK GRAPE JUICE. AT LEAST SOME OF THEM DID.

Church estimated that grape juice or non-alcoholic wine was what they consumed 95 percent of the time. Conversely, Giamatti claimed the actors drank real wine, and that he was actually very drunk after shooting a dinner scene.

One might expect the screenplay to show the hard partying characters regretting their decisions in the form of hangovers the next day, but in real life, the actors paid dearly for a mere meal.

8. THE MALE LEADS GOT FOOD POISONING.

Giamatti and Church got sick after eating at Miles' mother’s house; at one point during filming, Church had a temperature of 104 degrees.

Illustrated Series Highlights the World's Strange Cuisines

Posted: 10 Nov 2015 12:00 AM PST

This lighthearted series of illustrations from Factorialist magazine features foods from all over the world that would be considered unusual to many Western tastebuds. It has been said that "our differences make the world go 'round," and that notion is reinforced here.

Would you eat a raw sea bird stuffed into a raw, hollowed out seal carcass, all of which had been buried for months? I wouldn't go near it, but some people in Greenland would consider that a dish of the very special treat variety.

Looking back, it should have been obvious. We thought that we were free, but we were actually just free range. The lack of fences on the PlayPlace was a feature, not a bug. We wouldn’t need them if we were too slow to run away and too happy from our Happy Meals to even try. Far too late we realized that we should have gone with the Big Mc instead of the Big Mac.

Rumblr is Tinder for Fist Fights

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 09:00 PM PST

In the mood for a fight, but don’t want anything serious? If you like casual encounters with no strings attached, then have I got an app for you! This is Rumblr, a new app in development. Think of it as Tinder, except for a different kind of strictly physical relationship: a brawl. The New York Daily News reports:

"Rumblr is an app for recreational fighters to find, meet and fight other brawl enthusiasts nearby," according the app's website. It encourages users to insult their matched opponents with this pro-tip: "tell your match what you don't like about their picture."

The fight's location and time is also publicly broadcasted so other users can come and watch the melee, according to the website.

The app comes with a chat feature to talk trash and an interactive map, for users to find fights happening near them. It also has a filter system, with "RumblrHER" to find women fighting, and "RumblrGROUP" for crew brawls.

If Tyler Durden of Fight Club built an app, it would function like Rumblr. Just be aware that if this is your first night at fight club, you have to swipe right.

Kurt Cobain's Sweater Sells for $140,800 at Auction

Nirvana founding member and grunge god Kurt Cobain's sweater sold to an anonymous bidder for $140,800 at auction on Saturday. The sweater, which Cobain wore during Nirvana’s celebrated 1993 MTV: Unplugged performance, was expected to sell for approximately $100,000, according to Los Angeles-based entertainment memorabilia auction house Julien’s Auctions.

Four months after the MTV performance, Cobain committed suicide in his Seattle home. An unnamed person described as a "friend of the Cobain family" put the sweater up for auction. The fact that the mohair-blend garment was stained and cigarette burned likely only added to its distinction as a grunge collectible.

Cats vs. Babies: The Rebuttal

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 05:00 PM PST

Two weeks ago, Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal published a cartoon arguing why it’s better to have a cat instead of a baby. Lindsay Ishihiro, a mother and cartoonist in Canada, disagrees. She’s published a rebuttal explaining why a baby is a superior lifestyle choice to a cat. Read the rest here. She also explains that although parenting a baby is “difficult, mostly thankless work,” she’d never pass on it.

I agree. On my kids’ worst days, I’ve never regretted having them and can’t imagine being satisfied with my life without being a dad.

Man Takes Selfie With Goat, Internet Cares More About His Eyebrows

Taking a selfie with a goat seems like no big deal nowadays, because people take selfies with celebs like Kimye and Iggy Azalea all the time, which is pretty much the same thing.

But one funny faced fellow took a selfie with a goat and captured the attention of the interwebs- with his eyebrows.

A young Redditor named chirv went for a run down the road when his neighbor's pet goat decided to tag along, but the goat wasn't trying to get fit- it was mesermized by chirv's fabulous tufts of over eye hair.

Redditors naturally went a bit Photoshop crazy with the lad's selfie, and after moving the brows around a bit and messing with the local goat population numbers the selfie 'shopping reached this inevitable conclusion:

March of the Balloon Animals

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade has been bringing crowds to New York City since 1924. It was conceived to draw customers into the department store for Christmas shopping, and it was so popular that "let’s do it again next year" eventually became an annual tradition. Inflatable animals were introduced in 1927, partially to replace the cranky zoo animals that had previously marched. Mashable has a collection of vintage photographs from parades spanning from 1929 to 1964. Do not miss the 1937 giant reptile. -via Metafilter

Every Comment On Every Article About Bras Ever

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 12:00 PM PST

Adult women who use the internet already know this, and now Mallory Ortberg (previously at Neatorama) shares with everyone the comments you will see under any post about bras.

It sounds like you’re wearing the wrong bra size.

Did you know that 400% of American women are wearing the wrong bra size?

Most women don’t even realize that they’re wearing the wrong bra size.

If your breasts have leapt off of your torso, you’re probably not wearing the right bra size.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter if you have tried on every size that store sells, you will be told all your bra problems are the result of wearing the wrong size. Those aren’t the only comments, just the overwhelming majority. You can read the rest at The Toast.

In other news, Toast co-founder Mallory Ortberg is taking over the position of advice columnist Dear Prudence at Slate. And there was much rejoicing all along the internet. Commenters at Metafilter said,

She could do this for ten years and I'd never figure out whether she was offering earnest advice or satirizing the entire idea of advice columns.

Ortberg can just respond with some snarky medieval art.

Ortberg’s Dear Prudence advice column will debut next week.

Whodunit: Fooling the Foolproof Alarm

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 10:00 AM PST

The following is a Whodunit by Hy ConradThese mysteries are from The Little Giant® Book of Whodunits by Hy Conrad and Matt LaFleur. Can you solve the mystery before you read the solution?

After the theft of a medieval goblet, collector Felix Cheshire became obsessed with security. He improved his alarm system by installing metallic strips on the rear of all his canvases and other art objects. He didn't even trust his two longtime assistants. His latest precaution was to carry a loaded pistol and a sword hidden inside his walking cane.

As usual, Felix began his day by ushering in his assistants and setting the alarm. He had barely entered the rear research room when the alarm sounded. Grabbing his gun and cane, Felix hobbled up to the entrance and found Tanya Garfield standing by the door, a sheepish grin on her face. "I was just going out for coffee," she apologized. "I guess my earrings set it off."

The collector checked his major possessions, found nothing missing, then reset the alarm. He settled back into the research room and accepted a cup of tea from an earring-less Tanya. Felix had no idea for how long he'd nodded off. But suddenly Jack, his other assistant, was shaking him by the shoulders.

"It's gone," Jack shouted. "The da Vinci's gone." Jack led the way to a side gallery and pointed to the small empty frame. A razor on the floor gave mute testimony to how the priceless drawing had been removed. "I was working in the front. Tanya was in one of the middle rooms. I came in here to consult the Iliad codex, and . . ."

Using his cane, Felix hobbled to the front gallery and out the door. His gun set off the alarm. "Stay here," he ordered, then locked his employees in and telephoned the police.

Hours later, the two assistants were putting the distraught man to bed. "The police searched everywhere," the old collector moaned as Tanya took his cane and Jack began taking off his shoes. "The alarm was on. No one could have removed the drawing without setting it off."

The thief suppressed a smile and tried to look as concerned as Felix's other assistant.

How could the drawing have been removed? And who is the most likely suspect?

Sometimes People's Pinkie Toes Fall Off And Nobody Knows Why

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 09:00 AM PST

If someone told you their toes just sorta fell off one day and they have no idea why you'd probably assume they're either insane or high, but they may actually be the victim of dactylolysis spontanea.

It's an extremely rare form of autoamputation, meaning your body has decided to "shed" a limb, or in this case a toe, and it sounds like something you'd see on a sci-fi show like the Twilight Zone.

A Brazilian doctor named Silva Lima was one of the first to make note of this strange occurrence back in 1867, and even though multiple incidents have been recorded since there are still no answers as to why it occurs.

Here's what the process of losing toes to dactylolysis spontanea is like:

First a little band of tough tissue forms around the base of the pinkie toe. Usually, the band forms on each pinkie toe, because why not have horror be symmetrical? Eventually the band gets smaller and tighter, and the toe swells up. The toe, naturally, hurts, but there is nothing amiss with the rest of the person. They get to watch as the “band” gets narrower and tighter, breaking the bones in the toe as it constricts. The toe ends up hanging by a “pedicle,” a tiny bit of tissue and bone. Eventually, even that gives up the ghost and the toe drops off.

Medical science still can't explain this strange disease, and all they can say for sure is that it happens to people of African descent and those who live in the tropics more than anyone else. So count your blessings if you can still count all ten of your toes!

Designer Transforms Thrift Store Duds into Stylish Dresses at Dollar Store Costs

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 07:00 AM PST

Anyone who knows a clothing designer or has seen programs like Project Runway is aware of the material miracles designers can make from surprisingly meager beginnings. South Carolinian writer and designer Jillian Owens has definite opinions about the clothing industry, particularly its wasteful nature and often unethical labor practices. Owens said via her blog,

"I was worried about the impact on our planet as people tossed out their one-time-wear duds more and more quickly to make room for the newer & cheaper clothing."

Her solution? Transforming thrift store finds from muumuu to marvelous, and for as little as one dollar an outfit! Check out the closetfuls of Owens' new threads at her blog Refashionista. Via My Modern Met

Six-Year-Old Metalhead Performs The Most Brutal Mic Check Ever

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 06:00 AM PST

Is it just me or are kids bigger metalheads these days than ever before?

It seems like more and more kids are trading in their Sesame Street t-shirts and Kids Bop albums for Black Sabbath on vinyl and Slayer concert tees.

One extremely hardcore 6-year-old made it on to Skeletonwitch's Facebook page with her totally brutal mic check, and her growling was so fierce it sent shivers down the spine of the band's lead singer Chance.

(YouTube Link)

Will this young lady become the next mighty maiden of metal, or is this video by Fuglymaniacs the last we'll ever see of this hardcore cutie?

Well, she made at least one more appearance on this video entitled Birth A.D. vs. 6 yr. old (skip to 0:42 to see her), and considering these videos were posted three years ago she has most likely moved on to bigger and better things- like the fourth grade!

Interview: Cartoonist Cassandra Calin

Posted: 09 Nov 2015 05:00 AM PST

I first encountered Cassandra Calin's work with Hair: Expectations vs. Reality. I was immediately attracted to her vivid facial expressions that were perfectly formed for comedic effect. Since then, we've featured her work several times. Cassandra kindly agreed to an interview so that we could learn more about her art and life.

Can you tell us about your background? How did you start cartooning?

In middle school, I was always doodling instead of paying attention in class; especially science. I loved to scribble little people or funny faces on the photos that were in my science book. It was often something immature, but my friends thought it was hilarious.

Shortly after, one of my two childhood friends gave me the idea of starting a comic series based on us; the trio. Each episode was very roughly drawn on 1 or 2 pages and they had a few dirty jokes, some events that actually happened and a plot that rarely made sense. There was also an emphasis on each of our personalities and flaws in real life, which gave the series an interesting vibe. It was a very enjoyable personal project and it made me realize that I have a passion for comic art.

A year ago, a friend recommended that I join Tumblr and now, here I am, having a blast doing what I love.

Do you still draw the story of you and your friends?

I do, actually, but not as frequently as I used to when I first started. Since nowadays I'm quite busy focusing on other freelance projects as well as posting new content on my blog, I don't always have time for it. But every now and then, I go back to that series, re-read it, laugh a little and ultimately feel motivated to continue working on it.

What is your creative process like? How do you develop a cartoon?

I have a small notebook where I scribble anything in particular that happened during the day: something that could potentially be developed into a comic (no matter how boring it may seem). Then, I pinpoint a couple of topics that I could talk about and I try to visualize how the final artwork will look. But often times, more ideas come along as I'm drawing. And if I realize I haven't done anything in particular for a long while, I work out. That always ends terribly, so it's perfect for a comic.

So frustration is a major source of artistic inspiration for you?

In a way, yes. If something annoys me or drives me mad, I will draw it. But I will always draw it in a humorous way since I enjoy laughing at myself and my flaws

What tools do you use to draw your work?

My comics are all drawn by hand with a black Pigma Micron pen 01 for thin lines and a Sharpie Fine Point marker for thicker ones. Sometimes I even use a normal ballpoint pen; anything that allows me to draw with precision. Once the comics are done, I simply scan them at a high resolution and edit any minor details in Photoshop (cropping, levels, etc.)

My illustrations are often painted digitally in Photoshop or Illustrator with my Wacom tablet. Also, I enjoy inking by hand, scanning the drawing and coloring using Photoshop. And sometimes, I only work on paper and use color pencils instead. It really depends on what tools I feel like using that day, but I do enjoy variety very much.

Which cartoonists have influenced you?

A variety of artists have influenced me and my cartooning style: Bill Watterson, Tom Bancroft, Will Terrell, Delaf... I have always admired artists who are able to give their characters so much personality just from the way they illustrate them. And because I struggled with that, I always observed and tried to understand their techniques: how they draw the body language and the facial expressions; how they bring the character to life just in one drawing.

I discovered many great talented artists on Tumblr as well who inspire me to this day such as Megan Nicole Dong, David Litchfield, Ruby Elliot, Sarah Andersen, Kelly Bastow and many more.

Besides cartooning, what work do you do?

I try to keep as busy as I can. I do freelance work here and there. I also focus on graphic design and websites: I currently work at a local web development & design company; plus, I'm also learning a bit more about coding. All in all, I just do what I enjoy.

I understand that you have created a Society6 store. How is that line going?

So far, it's going quite well! In the beginning, I wasn't sure if having an online store would necessarily work out; I was certain that my only customer would be my mum. But now that it's out there, I'm happy to say that it's all going well and I will certainly keep adding new artwork and products as frequently as I can.
