The idea is to produce electric cars for the masses — 500,000 of them per year — by slashing the cost of batteries in half. Groundbreaking for this so-called Gigafactory has already begun on a 2,864-acre site outside of Reno. But there's one critical resource Tesla needs to secure BEFORE it can flip the switch.
