Brofist

Posted: 28 Feb 2016 04:00 AM PST

Sure, in a legal sense, redditor schizophrenicwheel owns Magnus the tarantula. But they're actually just friends--bros, really. In the past, she gave him a birthday hat for an iguana's birthday party.

Then, a year ago, she gave him a plush stuffed tarantula as a toy. He responded affectionately with a brofist. That's a polite spider who stays up on modern etiquette.

Player Discovers Mortal Kombat's Secret Menus After Over 20 Years

Posted: 28 Feb 2016 02:00 AM PST

Mortal Kombat brought the dark side to fighting games in the early 90s, and once gamers started finishing off their opponents with brutal fatalities they couldn't get enough.

But, like most arcade machines, there seemed to be nothing more to the game than what's presented after you plunk in a quarter, until one player's button mashing led to an amazing discovery.

It seems the game's creator Ed J. Boon put a hidden menu in the original arcade versions of Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3, and whoever enters the right button "code" can do all kinds of cool behind-the-scenes stuff via the "EJB Menu".

All secret characters can be instantly unlocked, you can watch endings for various characters, see every fatality, run diagnostics and play virtually impossible Galaga clone the "Penacho/Miller Game".

Here's a video posted by discoverer YourMKArcadeSource showing all the cool stuff found in the EJB Menu:

The Empty Cup Of Care - Good To The Last Shrug

Posted: 28 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST

The Empty Cup Of Care by Soulful

You've heard that old saying about the cup being half empty or half full, right? Okay, well here's the thing- some people see the cup as forever empty, because they never have any care in their cups. They don't see emptiness or fullness, positive or negative, happy or sad, they just live life knowing their cup of caring will forever remain empty as those happy half full and mopey half empty chuckleheads go around caring enough for everyone else!

Bring home a fresh pot of apathy with this The Empty Cup Of Care t-shirt by Soulful, it's perfect for those who are tired of all the shiny happy shirts out there that don't suit their "whatevs" state of mind.

Artists Turn Kids' Imaginary Friends into Reality

Posted: 28 Feb 2016 12:00 AM PST

This is Mabel (left) with her imaginary friend Chloe (right). Mabel drew a picture of her special friend. Then professional artists made a full-size plush toy of her.

(Photos: Rankin)

It's a project led by the ad agency AMV BBDO. They worked with the best artists, so you'll recognize the names: Tsuneo Goda, who developed the character Domo, Becky and Joe, who created Don't Hug Me, I'm Scared, and Aardman Studios, which developed Wallace and Gromit.

The results are extraodinary. You can see more photos of the kids with their now-real imaginary friends at My Modern Met.

Guests at this Scottish Airbnb Listing Are in Charge of Running the Bookstore Downstairs

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 08:00 PM PST

Are you a book lover who has ever considered opening your own bookstore? If so, this $39 per night Airbnb rental might be just your opportunity to "try on" that lifestyle without risk. In Wigtown, Scotland, a tiny, picturesque village, there is an independent bookstore called The Open Book. The space over the store is for rent on Airbnb with a six-night minimum stay, but there's a catch: renters are expected to work a forty-hour week in the bookstore, which comes staffed with a combination of volunteers and paid book retailers ready to assist. The listing reads in part:

"The first ever bookshop holiday/residency experience, Scotland's National Book Town welcomes you to play-bookshop for a week or two. We'll give you your very own bookshop, and apartment above, supported by a team of friendly volunteers and bookshop sellers to make your trip as lovely as possible. Set up by The Wigtown Festival Company, the bookshop residency's aim is to celebrate bookshops, encourage education in running independent bookshops and welcome people around the world to Scotland's National Book Town."

Terrifying Video: Shark Attacks Small Fishing Boat

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 06:00 PM PST

You're going to need a bigger boat.

Fishermen off Frenchman Island in New Zealand recently encountered a Great White Shark. It repeatedly bit the motor on their boat.

That was pretty smart for the shark, don't you think? First disable your prey's ability to escape, then go in for the kill.

The fishermen don't appear to be concerned. They call out, "Oi! Oi!" as though they're offended, rather than frightened.

Oscar Predictions 2016

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 04:00 PM PST

The 88th Academy Awards will be presented Sunday night. Pop cultures websites all over have laid down their predictions, and we’ll find out soon who is right. The linked websites have predictions for all the major awards, and many also include their opinions of who should win if it’s different from their predictions. But I’ll just mention their prediction for Best Picture here.

The Atlantic predicts The Revenant.

The New Yorker calls it for The Revenant.

Uproxx predicts The Revenant.

The Week selects The Revenant.

The Daily Beast picks The Big Short.

Vulture goes with The Revenant.

Flavorwire predicts The Big Short.

The A.V. Club thinks it will be The Revenant.

CinemaBlend thinks it will be The Big Short.

Buzzed predicts The Revenant.

The Verge says it will be The Revenant.

Screen Rant predicts The Revenant.

FiveThirtyEight says it will be The Revenant.

Screen Junkies has a video, but it wouldn’t load for me.

In many of these articles, which movie the authors think will win is separated from which movie they want to win, and many of them are wistfully wishing for Mad Max: Fury Road to win Best Picture or Best Director.

Political Polls Have Gotten Kind of Weird Lately

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 02:00 PM PST

Usually political polls are limited to feeling out how voters feel about candidates or controversial issues, but this year there have been some particuarly strange polls. For one, the New York Times polled Republicans to discover that nearly 20 percent of Trump's supporters were against the Emancipation Proclamation.

Even stranger, around 38% of Florida voters said that they think Ted Cruz could be the Zodiac Killer (10% of those believe he is). This is in spite of the fact that Cruz was born in 1970 and the Zodiac Killer was active in 1978.

These may be some strange polling topics, but I think you Neatorama readers could come up with better ones. What would you want to ask voters?

Twin Babies Fight over Pacifier

There are two baby girls, but only one pacifier. They're sisters. But, come on, this is no ordinary pacifier. This is the Purple Pacifier.

King Solomon would offer the dad solution: cut the pacifier in half, then offer one half to each child. Then the problem is over.

The Teen Who Invented Bras

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 08:00 AM PST

Young debutante Polly Phelps didn’t like what her corset did to the appearance of her dress in 1910 and put two handkerchiefs together to replace it. Her brassiere became popular, and she patented it in 1914. She then sold the patent for a pittance, but she didn’t need the money. That’s when Polly’s life got really interesting.

After her invention she met Harry Crosby, who confessed his adoration for her in a Tunnel of Love. She promptly divorced her first husband, married Harry in 1922, changed her name to Caresse and moved to France. Harry had also suggested the name Clytoris, but they decided to name their dog that instead. From Europe, Harry sent a telegram back to Boston to his family declaring: "PLEASE SELL 10,000 WORTH OF STOCK. WE HAVE DECIDED TO LEAD A MAD AND EXTRAVAGANT LIFE."

And it was an amazing life. Caresse Crosby ended up with a list of accomplishments that ranged from substantial to silly, which you can read about at Racked.

Pastry Ice Cream Cones Are the Greatest Invention in Human History

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 07:00 AM PST

(Photo via redditor iBleedorange)

These are trdelník. They are pastries from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Street Food around the World: An Encyclopedia of Food and Culture describes them as a sweet dough made into long strands, then wrapped around wood or metal rods, then baked while rotating over an open fire. They're often coated with sugar, cinnamon, or nuts after baking.

In this case, an unknown genius has filled the hollow pastry with chocolate sauce and soft serve ice cream!

The Simpsons Tarot Cards

Posted: 27 Feb 2016 06:00 AM PST

Deviant Art user dustbean11 created a hilarious set of Simpsons tarot cards that will certainly lend a comic bent to even the most dire of readings. So far he's created a dozen cards, so there's definitely room for expansion. And with characterizations like Grandpa Simpson as the Hermit and Homer as  what else?  the fool, expansion of the cards would be welcome.
