Governor Mike Parson proclaims National FFA Week in Missouri for nearly 26,000 agriculture students

Today, Governor Mike Parson proclaimed February 20-27, 2021, as National FFA Week in Missouri on behalf of nearly 26,000 members of Missouri FFA. Missouri FFA President Justin Eddy of Columbia received the proclamation on behalf of the 2020-2021 Missouri FFA State Officer team.

"Missouri agriculture has a bright future, and you can see that in action through our FFA members," Governor Parson said. "Living and working on a farm is one of my greatest honors, and the First Lady and I continue to look to these young leaders to move the agriculture industry forward for generations to come."

For the third year in a row, Governor Parson drove a John Deere tractor to the State Capitol in honor of the FFA tradition of students driving their tractors to school during National FFA Week. Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe also joined in on the tradition again this year with the Governor, demonstrating their ties to agriculture and commitment to FFA students.

"As a first generation farmer, it's exciting to see the opportunities available to our young people through the FFA," Lieutenant Governor Kehoe said. "It was really important to the Governor and I that we continued the tradition this year to let our FFA members know that we are here for them. They are a true representation of Missouri's greatness and continue to make Missouri proud."

In 1928, 33 young men met at the Baltimore Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, and began the National Future Farmers of America Organization. Today, 93 years later, the organization is officially known as the National FFA Organization and  represented locally by 8,700 FFA chapters and 760,000 members nationwide.

2020 Leopold Conservation Award - Missouri Farmers Care

Joshlin and Addie Yoder receive Missouri Leopold Conservation Award

Joshlin and Addie Yoder of Leonard, Missouri, located in Shelby County have been selected as the recipients of the 2020 Missouri Leopold Conservation Award®. The award, named for renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, recognizes farmers, ranchers and foresters who inspire others with their dedication to land, water and wildlife habitat management on private land.

In Missouri, the $10,000 award is presented annually by Sand County FoundationAmerican Farmland TrustMissouri Farmers Care (MFC), the Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). Joshlin and Addie were announced as the 2020 Missouri Leopold Conservation Award recipient at the Missouri Cattle Industry Convention in Osage Beach on January 9.

"The Yoder family's commitment to understand the importance of soil health is a testament to their success," said Scott Edwards, NRCS Missouri State Conservationist. "Taking steps to implement conservation practices and supporting monitoring efforts, contribute to improved natural resource benefits and make this farm an excellent example of sustainable agriculture."

In 2008, Joshlin and Addie returned to the Yoder family farm near Leonard. Early on a decision was made to invest in soil health ensuring viable and productive land could be passed down to future generations. The Yoders expanded their operation to include beef cattle and 1,100 acres of corn, soybeans and hay. They pool labor and equipment with Joshlin's father and brother who manage their own farms as well.

Join us in celebrating Weights and Measures Week!

The National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM) has announced March 1-7, 2021, as Weights and Measures Week. These dates are celebrated every year to commemorate President John Adams signing the first U.S. weights and measures legislation into law on March 2, 1799.

NCWM Chairman Hal Prince of the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced his theme for the year, "Measuring Up to the New Normal." Some of the new normal in commercial weighing and measuring includes taximeters using GPS to measure distance traveled, charging stations replacing fuel dispensers, and ecommerce replacing trips to the store.

"There really is a new normal and we have seen it coming for a while now," said Prince. "Consumer buying
preferences are changing and the business community is adapting. There was far less face-to-face interaction
with a local merchant, even before the pandemic. But the pandemic has rocketed the move to e-commerce to
the forefront!"

Our Weights, Measures and Consumer Protection Division maintains surveillance of commercial weighing and measuring devices. The division promotes uniformity in weights and measures laws, regulations, and standards to achieve equity between buyers and sellers in the marketplace and thereby enhance consumer confidence, enable Missouri businesses to compete fairly at home and abroad, and strengthen the state and U.S. economies.
