Dear reader,
It has been another year of highs and lows, with Covid-19 again dominating the news agenda. Despite a successful vaccine rollout in many countries, the pandemic is still not over, with the Delta – and now Omicron – variants in the headlines.
However, in some ways life has returned to a form of normality, with global sporting events keeping us entertained. The England football squad had a historic run at Euro 2020, we were introduced to tennis star Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon before she claimed a first Grand Slam title at the US Open, and Tom Daley captivated us with his knitting skills at the Olympics in Tokyo.
Here at The Independent we have covered it all: The Taliban were able to retake control of Afghanistan, leading to a mass evacuation of civilians by the international community. Stateside, Donald Trump was banned from social media platforms and Joe Biden was inaugurated as 46th president of the United States. Britney Spears was freed from her conservatorship, while billionaires Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson went to space. Closer to home, the government has been hit by scandal after scandal, from flat refurbishments to Christmas parties. And as we close out the year with Covid cases rising around the world, the news cycle certainly shows no signs of slowing down.
Join us in taking a moment to sit back, relax, and reflect on some of the biggest stories and highlights from 2021.
