| Today is World Orca Day, and we'd like nothing more than to send you some good news about these incredible species. Instead, we're raising the alarm: Big Oil and the shipping industry are planning not one, but two industrial megaprojects that could wipe out Southern Resident orcas for good. |
| First, the proposed Roberts Bank T2 shipping terminal would bring an exponential boom in shipping traffic throughout the orcas' habitat, migration route and feeding areas. The noise pollution alone would be detrimental to their survival – drowning out their sonar signals and disrupting their ability to communicate, avoid deadly collisions with ships and find the scarce Chinook salmon they depend on for food. |
| If that weren't enough, Big Oil is also aiming to EXPAND the Trans Mountain Pipeline to transport up to 890,000 barrels per day of some of the world's dirtiest tar sands oil in tankers through these orcas' delicate habitat. Big Oil has proven they cannot be trusted to put vital ecosystems above short-term profits. That means this pipeline expansion is a catastrophic oil spill waiting to happen – and we have to act to stop it now before it's too late. |
