In recent weeks, much focus has been on the Supreme Court eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion. But the Court has not stopped there. Other recent rulings have chipped away at basic liberties:
★ In Oklahoma v. Castro-Huerta, the Court attacked over a century of precedent that enshrined the right to self-governance for Native American tribes.
Here's how these decisions impact what we're doing: as the Court delivers blows to federal oversight that make state and local governments critical in these issues, redistricting becomes ever more important. The redistricting process determines the elections for state legislatures and other local offices -- it is now these politicians who have overwhelming power over these issues.
At All On The Line, our focus has been on the creation of a fair, transparent, and inclusive redistricting process. We have worked to support the use of independent commissions during the process. We have fought tirelessly to push for the fair election of state legislators -- legislators who will take strong action on issues of abortion access, climate change, and gun control. Worst of all, the court will hear Moore v. Harper, a case that tests the ridiculous Republican "independent state legislature theory" and could place redistricting almost solely in the hands of state legislatures. Vox describes the case as "the biggest threat to our democracy since January 6th."
If Republicans win, they will have even more control over redistricting in a majority of states -- creating gerrymandered maps the likes of which we have never seen before. As gun rights, climate change, and abortion come to the states, Republicans will have their way with all these issues.
The Supreme Court has recently issued numerous opinions stripping away fundamental rights. But these opinions are not the end of its anti-democratic efforts. They are the beginning. We must be prepared to continue the fight.
