Indiana: Urge your Senators to vote to repeal the 2002 Iraq AUMF

What is the 2002 Iraq AUMF, and why does it matter so much? Will answer both those questions in this email

As salaamu alaykum, Indiana —

You might not know it from the news. But we're at a crucial moment to put an end to our forever wars.

The U.S. Senate is expected to vote on repealing the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) — a critical legal justification for decades of invasions and a recent assassination.

Can you please take a moment now to urge your Senators to support repealing the 2002 AUMF?

This outdated war authority is unnecessary for ongoing military operations, but as long as it remains, it can be used and abused by presidential administrations.

The House of Representatives recently passed a provision led by Rep. Barbara Lee to repeal this dangerous authorization in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Now, we need the Senate to act.

Urge the Senate to repeal the 2002 AUMF.

As recently as January 2020, the Trump administration used the 2002 Iraq Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) to justify the assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, which brought the U.S. dangerously close to war with Iran. Congress never authorized this move, which the UN concluded was "unlawful."

We need to act to ensure this never happens again. A formal end to the U.S. war in Iraq was declared at the end of 2011 — the 2002 AUMF is no longer relevant even for its terrible stated purpose. It now only exists to be abused by future presidents unless we repeal it.

2022 is our best opportunity to finally repeal the 2002 AUMF once and for all.

Sen. Kaine filed his 2002 AUMF repeal NDAA amendment last week. We need the Senate to pass it.

This is absolutely winnable if we act now.

Urge your Senators to vote to repeal the 2002 Iraq AUMF.

Thank you for everything you do.

In solidarity,
Yasmine and the MPower Change Action Fund Team
