Joshua Sturma can still hear the voice of his former boss at the Shack in his head. A fiery Italian who was passionate about food, the man would lose his mind any time he'd go back into the kitchen and see his cooks under-seasoning or undercooking the hash browns.
Just one block outside the Grove's main drag, a terrific bar has opened — a serious place for drinks on the edge of what's often a gloriously unserious neighborhood. The Vandy (1301 South Vandeventer) opened January 17 in a building you might never have noticed, and even now could easily pass by.
Matt Lewis is proud of the deep relationships he's cultivated with his customers at Carl's Deli (6401 Clayton Road, 314-721-2392), first as a teenage employee and now as its owner. Sometimes, though, he has to laugh at how few boundaries there are between him and a few of his guests.
