Gove mocks Labour policy vacuum |
|
| Michael Gove, the levelling-up secretary, mocked Labour's hesitation over green investment in the final day of the Budget debate in the Commons. He was up against fellow "elder statesman" Ed Miliband, the shadow energy security and net zero secretary, and Gove said that Miliband is not being allowed to go as far as he would want by Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor. Gove pointed out that Labour's Green New Deal (now called the Green Prosperity Plan) is "unfunded", and quoted Ed Balls, the former shadow chancellor, as saying that the borrowing to pay for it poses the same risk that others (naming no names, Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng) have taken of "tanking the economy". Miliband fought back by quoting a Gove article from his wilderness year, 2017, in which he supported VAT on school fees. A score-draw. |

Our political commentator Andrew Grice on what to look out for tomorrow |
Prime Minister's Questions at noon will not be the main event. That will be former prime minister's questions when Boris Johnson is questioned by the privileges committee, which is investigating whether he misled parliament over the Partygate affair, starting at 2pm. Five hours have been set aside in what will be a crowded Grimond Room in Portcullis House. Simultaneously, the Commons will debate and vote on a statutory instrument bringing in the "Stormont brake" – a key part of the proposed UK-EU deal on the Northern Ireland protocol. The Home Affairs Committee will question Dame Louise Casey about her report on the Metropolitan Police at 2.45pm. |
