| | | Presented By JPMorgan Chase | | Axios PM | By Mike Allen · May 24, 2023 | 😎 Hello, Wednesday happy hour! Today's PM — edited by Erica Pandey — is 591 words, a 2-min. read. Thanks to Sheryl Miller for the copy edit. 🐊 Situational awareness: Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis — widely seen as former President Trump's most serious challenger — officially filed paperwork today to seek the Republican nomination for president. Go deeper. | | | 1 big thing: America's disaster scenarios | | | Illustration: Sarah Grillo/Axios | | Extreme weather and rising seas are endangering cities around the world — and vulnerable American metros are staring down disasters. - The big picture: A string of new studies points to looming concerns in the U.S. and around the globe.
💼 Case in point: Half of Phoenix residents would need emergency medical attention if a multiday blackout were to coincide with a heat wave, Axios Phoenix co-author Jessica Boehm writes from a new study. - Heat waves are deadly even when people have access to air conditioning. Combine extreme temperatures with a blackout, and the heat-related death rate would spike by 700%.
🏙️ New York City — on the opposite coast — has its own fears. - The city's massive skyscrapers are weighing it down and leaving it more vulnerable to sinking lower into the ocean, USA Today reports, citing new research.
- The city has more than a million buildings, weighing around 1.7 trillion pounds, and it's sinking 1–2 millimeters per year — all while the sea level continues to rise.
🔭 Zoom out: Absent new, more ambitious climate policies, the world is headed for a magnitude of climate change that would put about 2 billion people at risk of extreme heat by the end of the century, Axios' Andrew Freedman writes from another new study. | | | | 2. 🚨 AirTag mayhem | | | Illustration: Annelise Capossela/Axios | | Police urge drivers to use Apple AirTags to help authorities track stolen vehicles. - But there's increasing concern that the tags are leading some car-theft victims to take matters into their own hands, Axios' Russell Contreras and Keldy Ortiz report.
📈 By the numbers: Car thefts in 30 major cities jumped by 59% from 2019 to 2022, according to an analysis by the Council on Criminal Justice. - The use of AirTags to combat those soaring car thefts can foster a "Wild West" vigilantism that poses risks to citizens, security experts tell Axios.
Zoom in: At least two people have recently been killed — in San Antonio and Denver — in cases that authorities say involved victims using real-time tracking data to locate their stolen cars. - Apple did not respond to a request for comment. In a previous statement, the company said it actively works with law enforcement on all AirTag-related requests.
🔭 What to watch: New York, the nation's largest city, this month began handing out 500 free AirTags to fight auto theft. | | | | A message from JPMorgan Chase | Chase is growing its small business banking workforce by 20% | | | | Chase is hiring more than 500 small business bankers by 2024.
