Morning Rundown
🗣️ Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday defended the country's border policies, insisting the Biden administration was taking a strong enough stance on a surge of migration while batting away claims it was being overly strict. Progressives have compared President Joe Biden's policies to those of former President Donald Trump, who required migrants to apply for asylum in countries they passed through before applying for it in the U.S. The secretary pointed to the 50% drop in encounters at the border before the end of Title 42, which allowed expedited deportations of undocumented migrants.

🌪️ At least one person was killed and 11 others were hospitalized with injuries Saturday morning after a suspected tornado touched down near Laguna Heights, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, according to officials. However, in good news, as the small Texas town was picking up the pieces Sunday, an ABC News crew sprang into action and rescued a dog trapped underneath a damaged home.

🕊️ Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of the mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and with the date coinciding with Mother's Day, some victims' families expected it to be a challenging day. "My mom was in my corner for whatever, for better or worse," Wayne Jones told ABC News. His 65-year-old mother, Celestine Chaney, was one of the 10 Black people gunned down by a white supremacist teenager at a Tops grocery store in the city's east side, a historically Black neighborhood. Since the Tops massacre, many Buffalo community leaders said they are determined to expedite existing efforts to build a more equitable east side with initiatives to curb the high school dropout rate and boost the number of students seeking higher education.

💊 The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a first-of-its-kind drug, fezolinetant, sold under the brand name Veozah, to treat moderate to severe hot flashes during menopause. Hot flashes are one of the most common symptoms of menopause and many women have suffered for centuries without many treatment options. According to the FDA, the drug works by targeting the brain's temperature control center to decrease both the frequency and intensity of the symptom in women.

🎓 Of the millions of students graduating this spring, four of them will be Kanett Haynes' children. The South Carolina mom will be celebrating all of her kids at their commencement ceremonies.
