Hey Indiana, When it comes to jazz, there is one musical skill you will want to be highly skilled at: Having great ears. Obviously, I'm not talking about your actual ears (I'm sure they're fine). I'm talking about the ability to hear musical sounds and connect them to your instrument quickly. This is what improvisation requires, and unfortunately for the great music readers out there, it's not a big help when it comes to improvising solos, bass lines and chords. Typically when we think about ear training we think about intervals and chord recognition. These are what I call the fundamentals of ear training. But truth be told, that is actually not the most valuable way to train your ears for jazz. So what is?
