BREAKING NEWS: The Biden Administration has CANCELED all existing oil and gas leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge!
This is great news, Friend – BUT the new proposed rules still have some serious gaps, including the possibility of new developments in the Refuge. Here are two of the major concerns that remain:
The Administration has not acknowledged the impact on the subsistence for the Indigenous Gwich'in people. Without properly addressing this concern, their way of life is STILL UNDER THREAT from development in the Arctic.
There is still insufficient study on the effects of polar bears and caribou in the region. The Arctic is warming TWICE AS FAST as the rest of the world, and these species are in serious danger!
Please, Friend, will you tell President Biden to oppose development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and strengthen his actions to protect the Arctic?

President Biden also announced new rules for Alaska's National Petroleum Reserve. This is the single largest unit of public lands in the country, spanning nearly 23 million acres. It includes critical habitat for migratory birds, brown bears, threatened polar bears, walruses, and more. But once again, these protections don't go far enough. We need to ensure there are ZERO loopholes for allowing new oil and gas developments, like the approved Willow Project, which could cause irreparable harm.
The Arctic is on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Both the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the National Petroleum Reserve need new protections. Your message to President Biden can help ensure we implement his new protections – and go even further. But we're running out of time!
