Now let's get to the news.   Pakistan said it carried out strikes inside Iran. What to know: It targeted what it called "terrorist hideouts" in southeast Iran today, killing multiple people. Two days earlier, Iran struck targets inside neighboring Pakistan. Why it matters: Tensions in the Middle East are threatening to boil over. These strikes, and a new round of U.S. strikes against Houthi militants in Yemen, further raise that risk. Read this story     A federal judge threatened to throw Donald Trump out of court yesterday. Why? He refused to keep quiet during writer E. Jean Carroll's testimony at his defamation trial. Carroll alleges that Trump defamed her after she accused him of sexual assault. In other Trump news: A Maine judge put off deciding whether the former president can appear on Maine's primary ballot, saying the Supreme Court must rule on the issue first. Read this story     A Chinese scientist filed a coronavirus sequence weeks before its official release. What happened? The scientist tried to publish the virus's genetic profile two weeks before Beijing formally released the sequence, federal documents shared yesterday show. What it means: The delay may have slowed work on tests, treatments and vaccines. And it raises new questions about China's transparency at the start of the global pandemic. The details: The wife of the future British king is hospitalized and will probably not resume duties for months, Kensington Palace said yesterday. It's unclear what procedure she had. What else to know: King Charles III is scheduled for a procedure next week to treat an enlarged prostate, a usually benign condition that affects many men as they age. White-throated sparrows, American crows and American goldfinches are some types that have grown rarer. You can search the losses in your neighborhood here. Why is this happening? We are largely to blame. Birds' biggest challenges — habitat loss, pesticides, glass windows and even domestic cats — are all human-made. The eye-catching Live Translate tool is one of many features added to the AI-first smartphone. Zooming out: AI gadgets like this may become the most-talked-about technology of 2024. But be wary of them — most will be half-baked, creepy or just plain terrible ideas. Read this story     Dung beetles couple up to move balls of poop quicker. How we know: Scientists put 188 beetles into tubs with cow dung. The insects paired up in male-female couples to move and bury their prized poop balls, a new study found. This is unusual: Other animals like ants and spiders also cooperate to move things, but only if they know where they're taking it. The beetles don't know where they're going.
