154th Session of the Executive Board

The 154th session of the Executive Board takes place on 22–27 January 2024. Proceedings will be webcast from this page.

The Executive Board is composed of 34 technically qualified members elected for three-year terms. The main functions of the Board are to implement the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, and to advise and generally facilitate its work.

The meeting convened at 9:30am CET on Monday, 22 January 2022. The working hours will be as follows:

· Monday 22 January: 09:30-12:30 and 14:30-17:30 CET

· Tuesday 23 January onwards: 10:00-13:00 and 14:30-17:30 CET

Key moments

· Monday 22 January, WHO Director-General will deliver his report and is expected at 10 am CET

· Tuesday 23 January at 10 am CET, members of EB will consider the appointment of the Regional Directors for the Eastern Mediterranean, South-East Asia and Western Pacific regions respectively. Documents are available here:

At the side of the 154th session of WHO Executive Board, an informal briefing was held on Monday 22 January 2024. It is on the processes related to the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body to draft and negotiate a WHO convention, agreement or other international instrument on pandemic prevention, preparedness and response (INB) and the Working Group on Amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005) (WGIHR).

Integration of Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) in the Institutionalization of Evidence-Informed Decision-making

Hybrid Side event at the 2024 Prince Mahidol Award Conference, Bangkok, Thailand, 9:00-12:30

The Evidence Unit of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine and the WHO Evidence to Policy and Impact Unit (Research for Health Department), are hosting a collaborative side event at the 2024 Prince Mahidol Award Conference (PMAC) exploring the current state of Evidence-informed policy-making (EIDM) institutionalization globally and the implications of its intersections with Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) in fostering inclusivity, health equity, epistemic justice, and decolonial global health governance. The side event will explore potential mechanisms (infrastructure, conditions, frameworks) for enhancing the use of evidence in global policy development toward realizing TCIM’s contribution to health and wellbeing.

Trachoma: Accelerating progress to elimination as a public health problem

Sightsavers and the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) are holding an online event on 23 January 2024 to share and discuss learnings around how to eliminate the infectious eye disease trachoma.

The event, which will take place from 14:00 – 16:00 GMT, will share the findings from a new collection of research papers – 'Trachoma: Accelerating progress to elimination as a public health problem' in the RSTMH journal International Health. You can read the research supplement here.

100 Days Mission Report Launch

WHO's Chief Scientist, Dr Jeremy Farrar, will provide opening remarks at a report launch event for the 100 Days Mission, which is supported by the International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat.

The 100 Days Mission has the goal of making tests, therapeutics and vaccines available, safe, effective and affordable within the first 100 days after a pandemic threat is identified. Zoom registration available here.
