February 22, 2024

GROWING GOOD DADS

How to Bond with Your Newborn

Skin-to-skin contact, practicing empathy and more

In the first days of life, some dads find it challenging to connect with their babies. And let’s be honest: Newborns don’t do much! They sleep, eat, cry, poop—and the cycle continues.

If you struggle to connect with your new son or daughter, you are not alone. Fatherly instincts don’t always come naturally, and that doesn’t make you a bad dad.

My Baby Contracted RSV – A Parent's Nightmare (with a Happy Ending)

With New Dad Tim Lewis

This week we're happy to welcome Tim Lewis to the studio, a first-time dad to a four-month-old. Join us as Tim shares the scary story of when baby Ophelia got sick with RSV around the end of last year.

After initially going to Mercy in Springfield, doctors later needed to airlift Ophelia to an ER in Kansas City. Thankfully, Ophelia has been able to make a full recovery.

"I wasn't afraid for her life. I really felt she would be okay—but when the flight nurses came in and basically strapped my 13-pound child to a gurney-looking thing and took her away ... Which, my wife was with her, but, you know, it was just terrifying."

DAD JOKES

After I handed my daughter an apple she said, "But Dad, I wanted a pear!"

So I gave her another apple.

I tried to climb a really tall tower in Paris...

but Eiffel off.

POLL

In last week's newsletter, we asked whether the kids should be involved in parents' Valentine's Day plans. Here's how you all responded:

  • YES, Valentine's Day should be a family event. (40%)

  • NO, Valentine's is for parents to have alone time away from the kids. (60%)

The subscribers have spoken! Looks like we're far from a consensus, but the majority of you agree that V-DAY is for parents—NO KIDS ALLOWED!

TRIVIA

Test your medical knowledge on Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in newborns/infants:

Which of the following is TRUE about RSV?
Youngsters are most at risk for contracting the virus between 2-3 years old.
In 2025, the CDC will release the first RSV vaccine to be administered during pregnancy.
RSV can cause more severe infections, like bronchitis and pneumonia.
It's possible to contract RSV at any time, but outbreaks are most common in summer.

We'll reveal the correct answer in next week's newsletter!
