The Value of Home Visits for New Parents

With Nurse Bre Tyger

This week on the podcast, we welcome to the studio Bre Tyger, a public health nurse and Community Alignment Specialist with Family Connects, an international program new to the area. Join us as Bre discusses how she helps new parents, nurturing observant youngsters, the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) nutritionist program, and encouraging new, first-time dads to be involved in the lives of their infants.

"As a public health nurse with the health department, we get to see people where they are. We go into their homes. We can have real conversations with them ... and meet them where they're at. I think, sometimes in a hospital environment it's kind of hard to see what's going on ... or what you really need. "

POLL

In last week's newsletter, we asked you to weigh in on parenting youngsters under 6 months VS 6 months –1 year old. Here's how our subscribers responded!

  • It gets easier after about 6 months (15%)
  • It's about the same (31%)
  • Parenting gets harder as the baby grows (54%)

The results are in: The majority of you think we're not out of the woods yet! More than half of our respondents say there are still greater parenting challenges to come. We'll keep covering child development milestones and fatherhood tips all year in the Growing Good Dads blog.

TRIVIA

Communicating well takes practice, especially when it comes to co-parenting. (PSST! If you read this week's blog, this week's quiz question will be easy!)

Which of these is NOT an example of a communication filter?
Misunderstanding someone's expectations or beliefs
Speaking only for yourself
Being very hungry or tired
Trying to guess what someone will say

We'll reveal the correct answer in next week's newsletter!
