Attention all documentary film lovers! Thin Line Fest, Texas' longest running documentary film festival, is April 24-28 in downtown Denton and you can watch 60 documentary films for free! 21 of this year's films have never screened in Texas, and many others will make their US and even World premieres. Filmmakers and even subjects are flying in from around the world to attend their screenings, and attending is so easy. Reserve your free General Admission wristband at https://thinline.us and then show up, it's that simple. Read on for highlights from our 17th annual film festival. The fest opens Wednesday evening, April 24th, with a double header co-hosted by the Dallas Video Fest. At 6:30PM is the Texas Premiere of No One Asked You from Director Ruth Leitman (in attendance). Comedian, disruptor-extraordinaire Lizz Winstead (co-creator The Daily Show) and her team Abortion Access Front crisscross the U.S. activating small-town folks to rebuild vandalized clinics, exposing wrongdoer politicians, domestic terrorists, and media neglect as the race to the bottom ensues. Then at 9:15PM, we explore the meaning of truth in modern news with Breaking the News by Director Chelsea Hernandez (in attendance). Seeking to buck the white male status quo, a group of women and LGBTQ+ journalists launch a news startup asking who's been omitted from mainstream coverage, and how to include them. Thin Line Fest also doesn't shy away from politically charged topics and that is evident with a selection of short films on Saturday that is sure to invoke discussion. Films include Love to the Max, in which the Briggle family grapples with the choice of whether to stay in Texas and fight newly passed laws or flee with their transgender son, Max. Fallout explores a wave of sickness spreading through a rural Appalachian town, perhaps connected to a local ammunition plant. Barbette + Fontaine are two drag icons united through art, resilience and a shared legacy of self-expression and freedom. And The Nationals, a short that follows two First Nation brothers looking to overcome the odds and represent their people playing their sacred game at the World Lacrosse Championship. One of the most important themes of the festival is music, and there are 16 different documentaries that explore that world, including feature films Max Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes, Omoiyari: A Song Film by Kishi Bashi, Música!, and Nobody May Come. Along with a short film program that screens on Friday, these documentaries reveal the melodies and rhythms of everyday life. Música! is a Texas Premiere, and the latest from three-time Oscar®-winning documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (The Celluloid Closet, Common Threads, The Life and Times of Harvey Milk). The film follows Horns to Havana, a volunteer organization of US artisans that makes regular pilgrimages to deliver strings and other basic supplies to the Amadeo Roldan Conservatory of Music. The school accepts only 1% of applicants. Shot over several years, Música! allows us to witness these performers embarking on professional careers that may well prove stellar. These are but a few of the sixty documentaries screening in Denton April 24-28. Reserve your free General Admission wristband and explore the full lineup at https://thinline.us.
