Rishi Sunak's scary speech | "The next few years will be some of the most dangerous yet the most transformational our country has ever known." The prime minister tried to scare people into voting Conservative in a speech this morning. It didn't make much sense, as Joe Murphy writes. The first and second world wars were dangerous. The Cuban missile crisis was dangerous. "An axis of authoritarian states like Russia, Iran, North Korea, and China ... working together to undermine us and our values"? Call me complacent, but it is not the same. And if people are frightened, would they rather have Rishi Sunak and Grant Shapps promise to spend 2.5 per cent of national income on defence or Keir Starmer and John Healey? Much of a muchness for most, I suspect. As for the terrors of "transformational" years, if that means artificial intelligence, it is not going to shift a single vote. There are many reasons to worry about a Labour government, but these are not they. | |
