Defend The Pickleball Lob |
One of the most common injuries seen in pickleball is a wrist injury from falling while attempting to defend a lob. This is most prevalent in senior pickleball players, but it's easy to become disoriented and unstable while backpedaling at any level, and learning the proper technique to defend lobs can prevent injury and earn you points on the pickleball court. One of the major mistakes to avoid once you recognize the lob is immediately looking up to find the ball. This is one of the easiest ways to become disoriented and lose balance. Instead, turn your body sideways to maintain balance while moving backward to track the ball. This sideways turn will also provide you power to return a lob as an overhead smash. If you plan on hitting a short dink inside your opponent's kitchen, you should be prepared to defend a lob in return. While your opponent won't be able to attack the ball with speed due to the angle of the ball relative to the net, they can still return a high, arching lob just over your head. One strategy to prepare for this shot is to take a shuffle step off the kitchen line. Positioning yourself further within the transition zone will prevent your opponent from scoring on a lob that's just out of your reach, and it will set you up for returning an overhead smash. With all this talk about overhead smashes, it's important to think about your placement before you hit the ball. Senior pickleball players will occasionally get lobbed from the baseline, but this is an opportunity to score! It's important not to go for the lines here, because there is such a high chance of error. Instead, aim your overhead smash for the deep middle of the court. Your opponents will have a hard time defending the shot and may often return another lob that you can attack again. See drills you can practice to defend a lob below. |
Teaming Up With Dinkville, Nashville's #1 Pickleball Community |
|
|
As the surge in pickleball popularity continues, so does the scale of pickleball venues. Few locations, however, have reached such heights as the Bobby Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. After teaming up with Dinkville, Nashville's No. 1 pickleball community, the Bobby enlisted Selkirk to help bring their rooftop pickleball court to life. Now, people can dink above the iconic downtown streets on an equally iconic rooftop court, the only of its kind in Nashville. The pop-up event officially launched at the end of May with a celebrity-pro tournament, and popular names like songwriter Morgan Evans and former pro hockey player James Neal were joined by some of pickleball's top pros. If you're in the area, the rooftop court is a must-see spot. This pop-up event is available now through October 20, 2024. |

Roger Federer Is A Fan Of Jack Sock (And Pickleball!!) |
Tennis legend Roger Federer has finally picked up a pickleball paddle and his head may be turning. Nearly 2 years after his retirement from tennis, Federer talks about his first time playing pickleball in Vietnam, saying pickleball is "an easier game than tennis and it’s fun." While the debate rages on which sport is easier, there's no denying the excitement of luring one of the greatest of all time into the fastest growing sport. Federer also called out pickleball pro Jack Sock, saying he likes to watch Sock's highlights. |
