This week marked the half-way point in an election campaign that has gone from bad (and wet) to worse for Rishi Sunak in his attempt to close the polls with Labour.
Both parties launched their manifestos, with the PM desperate for something to change his party's fortunes. Unfortunately for him, the promise of even more national insurance cuts and a pledge to halve migration didn't do the trick. On Thursday night a new poll put the Conservatives behind Nigel Farage's Reform party for the first time (albeit by only 1 percentage point). Farage used the poll to declare that Reform is now the 'new opposition' and said he should go head-to-head with Sir Keir Starmer in a televised debate. For his part, Mr Sunak said he was confident that his party wouldn't come third in the election – which is a pretty remarkable statement to have to make at this stage in the game.
