Security Council voted for a permanent cease-fire in Gaza. What happened? The U.N.'s most powerful body approved a U.S.-sponsored resolution yesterday to support an American-backed cease-fire plan. What it does: Pushes Hamas and Israel toward an immediate end to the fighting and release of hostages. Hamas welcomed the vote, while Israel has objected to parts of the plan. Read this story         Donald Trump met with a New York probation officer over video yesterday. Why? It's a routine step for defendants after a guilty verdict. The interview may be used to help decide Trump's punishment when he is sentenced July 11 in his hush money case. Other Trump news: The judge in his classified documents case in Florida ruled she will delete a paragraph in the federal indictment against the former president. Read this story           A Supreme Court justice appears to have been caught on a secret recording. The details: Justice Alito can be heard saying "one side or the other is going to win" the nation's polarized politics and agreeing with the idea that the U.S. needs to return to "godliness." Why it matters: The sting operation adds to the scrutiny Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann, are facing over flags flown at their homes. She talks about that controversy in the tapes. Read this story         The jury in Hunter Biden's trial began deliberations yesterday. What they're deciding: Whether to convict President Biden's son on three federal gun charges. Prosecutors say he lied on a form to buy a gun in 2018. Zooming out: This closely watched trial focused in detail on Hunter Biden's years-long struggle with drug addiction. Its outcome could affect his father's reelection campaign. Read this story         ADVERTISEMENT     A time lapse of coastal flooding in North Carolina was caught on camera. What you're looking at: A high tide overwhelming outdated infrastructure in Carolina Beach, south of Wilmington, in August. The Post set up cameras along the main road to capture it. Why it matters: The videos show what average water levels may look like in the future in Carolina Beach — and coastal towns throughout the U.S. — as sea levels keep rising. Read this story         Apple revealed its plan to sprinkle artificial intelligence across its apps and devices. The details: The company will introduce "Apple Intelligence" this fall, it said yesterday. It was one of several big announcements at its annual developers' meeting — find the rest here. What will it do? Generate text and images for emails and messages, and boost the Siri virtual assistant. Apple also announced a deal with ChatGPT maker OpenAI to use its tech. Read this story         Elephants may use names to address each other. What to know: Elephants recognize certain "name-like" sounds, a new study found. Researchers used AI to analyze 469 calls, or "rumbles," from wild African elephants. What it means: Elephants — already known to be very clever — may be able to understand the connection between a name and an individual, the way humans do.
