There were key primary elections in New York and Colorado yesterday.

In New York: County official George Latimer defeated Rep. Jamaal Bowman in a bitter Democratic primary that divided candidates on race, class and the war in Gaza.
In Colorado: Rep. Lauren Boebert won a Republican primary in a new district after deciding not to seek reelection in her current, more competitive one.

How? Since 2020, county-level officials in five key states have tried to block the certification of vote tallies. Experts fear it's a test run for thwarting President Biden in November.

What to know: Thousands of former service members were involuntarily discharged under an old law banning gay sex in the military. Biden will announce the pardons today.
What it means: Veterans convicted before the law was repealed in 2013 will be able to apply to recover financial benefits that have been withheld by the government.

The espionage trial of a U.S. journalist began in Russia today.

Who? Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Last year, he was arrested and charged with spying while on a reporting trip in Russia. The U.S. says the case is baseless.
What now? The trial will remain closed to the public and is expected to last several months. If convicted, Gershkovich faces 20 years in prison.

Protests against new tax proposals in Kenya turned deadly yesterday.

What happened? Police fired on protesters after thousands stormed Kenya's Parliament and set parts of it on fire. Five people were killed and 31 injured, human rights groups said.
What are they protesting? Tax hikes proposed by Kenyan President William Ruto. He has become deeply unpopular over the legislation, which has enraged the middle class.
