This was the week the election campaign really took off thanks to an explosive television debate, a highly unusual prime ministerial apology – and the return of Nigel Farage. It's fair to say that none of it was good news for Rishi Sunak, who finished his week having to say sorry for leaving the 80th anniversary of D-Day commemorations in France early. He would have been feeling happier with his lot after the first of the television head-to-heads with Sir Keir Starmer. Sunak was aggressive and confident in sharp contrast to a nervous-looking Starmer. But while he might initially have been pleased at landing the claim that Labour was going to tax every household an additional £2,000, it all unravelled the next day when the Treasury rebutted the idea that the figures were independent and verified by them. Labour took the unusual step of saying Sunak had lied – not a word that politicians are allowed to use in reference to each other in the House of Commons – as the contest turned nastier than it has been so far.
