After weeks of intense pressure, Joe Biden finally bowed out of the presidential race this week, clearing the way for Kamala Harris to take on Donald Trump in the race for the White House.
The vice president immediately won the backing of major Democrats – and slightly later, on Friday, also received the endorsement of Barack and Michelle Obama. "There is no doubt in our mind that Kamala Harris has exactly what it takes to win this election and deliver for the American people," the statement read.
The money from donors has been flowing into the Harris campaign and Trump appears rattled – refusing to commit to a televised debate with his new opponent.
Polling had shown that the one contest Americans didn't want was Trump v Biden, largely because of their age. Now we will see if Harris can capitalise and become the first woman to be elected American president.
