The Future of Pickleball as an Olympic Sport |
Pickleball claimed its place as the fastest growing sport in America 3 years in a row, and that trend is being emulated around the world. What will it take, then, for pickleball to weave its way into the fabric of the Olympics? Simply put, it will take time and support. The process of becoming an Olympic sport is nuanced. For starters, at least 75 countries across 4 continents must widely practice pickleball. Additionally, it must comply with other numerous bans and regulations set in place by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Recognition by the IOC as a qualifying sport isn't all—the host country must then add it to the official Olympic Programme. With these stipulations in mind, the earliest opportunity for pickleball to find its way to the biggest stage in the world is in 2032, as the 2028 games in Los Angeles are already solidified. Most pickleball pros and enthusiasts believe 2036 is more realistic, though. So, what can we do in the meantime? Keep playing! Your pickleball obsession is what continues to grow the sport on an global level. |
